The Open Data movement has gained momentum among governments, in the business world, and in the public sector in recent years. This movement has resulted in a growing number of open and accessible datasets that have established a solid basis for enhanced service offerings and improved experiences for citizens and businesses. Statistical data, which embodies a big portion of Open Data, comprises a wide range of domains including finance, demographics, transportation, employment, etc. Statistical data plays an important role in public policy formation and as a facilitator for informed decision-making in the private sector. Linked Statistical Data is an evolving concept that combines the richness of Linked Data (a set of best practices for publishing and connecting structured data on the Web) with the descriptiveness of statistical data to integrate data from multiple sources and put it in a semantic context. In this short paper, Linked Statistical Data limitations and challenges are explored before introducing Linked Widgets as an innovative approach. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Semantic Web and Linked Data are widely considered as effective and powerful technologies for integrating heterogeneous data models and data sources. However, there is still a gap between promising research results and prototypes and their practical acceptance in industry contexts. In context of our industry partners we observed a lack of tool-support that (a) enables efficient modeling of OWL ontologies and (b) supports querying and visualization of query results also for non-experts. The selection and application of existing semantic programming libraries and editors is challenging and hinders software engineers, who are familiar with modeling approaches such as UML, in applying semantic concepts in their solutions. In this paper we introduce the Semantic Model Editor (SMEd) to support engineers who are non-experts in semantic technologies in designing ontologies based on well-known UML class diagram notations. SMEd - A Web-based application - enables an efficient integration of heterogeneous data models, i.e., designing, populating, and querying of ontologies. First results of a pilot application at industry partners showed that SMEd was found useful in industry context, leveraged the derivation of reusable artifacts, and significantly accelerated development and configuration of data integration scenarios. The original REA accounting model (McCarthy, 1982) has been extended in previous years into a business modeling language. Apart from its conceptual model, academic effort has been put into the definition of a formal description language, based on standards such as UML or OWL. The specification of a generic data model from a software engineering point of view for domain independent use of REA for business model specification and execution has been touched only briefly in the past. Thus, we present a data model concept for runtime-configurable REA business model definition and execution.

Today, business processes are modeled without taking into deeper consideration the context of the business environment where they will be later executed. As a consequence, initiation, management, and delayed adjustments of business processes are demanding, time-consuming, and very often impossible tasks. In this paper, we summarize crucial advantages and disadvantages of different context modeling approaches, and we define the context related to the scope of the business environment particularly. If we could assign a business context to a business process, we could undermine negative trends in today’s business, such as interoperability issues, inconsistencies, and heterogeneous interpretations of different business processes. © Springer India 2014.

Patent search tasks are challenging and often require many hours or even days to be completed. Patent search systems that integrate multiple search tools could assist patent examiners to complete the demanding patent search tasks by using the set of search tools most suitable for the task at hand. PerFed- Pat is an interactive patent search system designed on this principle and based on the federated search approach and the ezDL framework. PerFedPat provides core services to search multiple online patent resources, while hiding complexity from the end user. The extensible architecture of the system enables the integration and parallel use of multiple search tools. In this paper, we present part of a user study of the PerFedPat system and we also discuss the results, mostly focused on the research question: could the patent examiners efficiently use a patent search system that integrates multiple resources, search tools and UIs?. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

The citation count is an important factor to estimate the relevance and significance of academic publications. However, it is not possible to use this measure for papers which are too new. A solution to this problem is to estimate the future citation counts. There are existing works, which point out that graph mining techniques lead to the best results. We aim at improving the prediction of future citation counts by introducing a new feature. This feature is based on frequent graph pattern mining in the so-called citation network constructed on the basis of a dataset of scientific publications. Our new feature improves the accuracy of citation count prediction, and outperforms the state-of-the-art features in many cases which we show with experiments on two real datasets. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Sharing research data is becoming increasingly important as it enables peers to validate and reproduce data driven experiments. Also exchanging data allows scientists to reuse data in different contexts and gather new knowledge from available sources. But with increasing volume of data, researchers need to reference exact versions of datasets. Until now access to research data often based on single archives of data files where versioning and subsetting support is limited. In this paper we introduce a mechanism that allows researchers to create versioned subsets of research data which can be cited and shared in a lightweight manner. We demonstrate a prototype that supports researchers in creating subsets based on filtering and sorting source data. These subsets can be cited for later reference and reuse. The system produces evidence that allows users to verify the correctness and completeness of a subset based on cryptographic hashing. We describe a replication scenario for enabling scalable data citation in dynamic contexts.

The discordance of the available Building Performance Evaluation Tools with the capabilities and expectations of the design community and complexities related to data availability and accessibility are among the most important technical barriers against sufficient adoption of such tools to support and guide design decisions. On the other hand, the complexity of the design problem, a consequence of the large number of variables and options involved (e.g., financial, environmental, technical, and legal factors) calls for more effective approaches towards sustainable design optimization. The SEMERGY project seeks to overcome such technical challenges through development of a user-friendly design optimization environment, tailored to suit the specific requirements and skills of the novice and professionaldesign community. The key feature of the SEMERGY environment is the incorporation of semantic web technology toward efficient search for and compilation of input information required for comprehensive analysis and evaluation of candidate design options supported by multi‐objective decision support methods. The present contribution briefly presents the underlying concept of the SEMERGY environment. It particularly focuses on SEMERGY's beta release, designed for optimization of retrofit projects in view of potential construction options. Leveraging the web of data via linked widgets

Machine-readable datasets that have increasingly become available in open formats in recent years have great potential as a foundation for innovative applications and services. Linked Data in particular-a set of best practices for publishing and connecting structured data on the Web-has facilitated significant progress in evolving the Web of documents into a Web of Data. However, although this concept has opened up many opportunities for data sharing and collaboration, integrating data is still a challenging task that requires considerable technical expertise and a profound understanding of the underlying datasets. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to provide knowledge workers with the necessary tools to leverage the fast growing Linked Data Cloud by creating semantic-aware dataflow processes. To this end, we introduce the “Linked Widget” concept as an enhancement of standard Web Widgets. These widgets are based on a semantic data model that facilitates powerful mechanisms for gathering, processing, integration, and visualization of data in a user-friendly Mashup environment. By allowing knowledge workers to easily create complex Linked Data applications in an adhoc manner, our approach should contribute towards reducing existing barriers of Linked Data adoption.

This work presents a method to determine rotor oscillations during a three-phased sudden short-circuit test of a synchronous generator. To our best current knowledge, no such similar method is yet published in the technical literature. During the periodic and non-periodic component separation of the three phase currents, it was found that the time difference between the currents' extreme values, for any of the three phase currents, does not have a 10 ms constant value, as in the stationary phase. Investigating why this happens we found that these variations are caused by the rotor oscillations. Certain parameters of a synchronous generator's rotor and of the rotor's oscillations are measured during the sudden three-phased short-circuit test. Based on these readings, with the method presented in this paper, we can compute the rotor's mechanical oscillation amplitudes and the transient process durations. Using the measured values, the equation describing the rotor's mechanical oscillations, independent of its power, can be re-written. Knowledge of the oscillation amplitudes and their durations is necessary for a correct loop control design and in establishing the generator's performance. © 2014 IEEE.
