Business transactions between companies are more and more executed by a flow of well-defined electronic business documents. The resulting inter-organizational business processes are often realized by concepts known from service-oriented computing. Exchanging a business document corresponds to a service call and the input/output of the service calls commonly follows a certain business document standard. However, these standards typically present the superset of all required elements used in any business context. In a specific context (in a specific industry, in a specific geopolitical region, etc.) the input/output is adjusted to this context by constraints on the generic structure. Accordingly, a specific service is always used in a specific context. It follows that it is important to define the business context of a service (in a structured format). For this purpose we have developed the Business Context Ontology model (BCOnt). In this paper we elaborate on the theoretical concepts and the underlying algorithms as well as on their implementation in practice.

Fast and realistic synthesis of real videos with computer generated content has been a challenging problem in computer graphics. It involves computationally expensive light transport calculations. We present a novel and efficient algorithm for diffuse light transport calculation between virtual and real worlds called Differential Irradiance Caching. Our algorithm produces a high-quality result while preserving interactivity and allowing dynamic geometry, materials, lighting, and camera movement. The problem of expensive differential irradiance evaluation is solved by exploiting the spatial coherence in indirect illumination using irradiance caching. We enable multiple bounces of global illumination by using Monte Carlo integration in GPU ray-tracing to evaluate differential irradiance at irradiance cache records in one pass. The combination of ray-tracing and rasterization is used in an extended irradiance cache splatting algorithm to provide a fast GPU-based solution of indirect illumination. Limited information stored in the irradiance splat buffer causes errors for pixels on edges in case of depth of field rendering. We propose a solution to this problem using a reprojection technique to access the irradiance splat buffer. A novel cache miss detection technique is introduced which allows for a linear irradiance cache data structure. We demonstrate the integration of differential irradiance caching into a rendering framework for Mixed Reality applications capable of simulating complex global illumination effects.

Business Intelligence (BI) provides methods for analyzing business-critical information and supports decision-making processes. Interactivity or the possibility to engage in an active discourse with the representation lies at the core of Information Visualization and Visual BI. However, current work practice and users' perspectives on visualization and interactivity in BI have not been investigated yet. As a first step in this direction, a qualitative empirical study was conducted among six IT-managers working in the field of BI. Main results are that interactive visual methods in BI are not used very often in practice. One of the main reasons reported is the fact that visualization is still two steps ahead and at the moment mostly more basic problems concerning data gathering, data modeling and data quality prevail. Moreover, most users are used to work with numbers and tables and are not aware of the possibilities in terms of visualization. However, the interviewed IT-managers acknowledged that using more interactive visual methods in BI would be beneficial for users.

The VISCERAL project is building a cloud-based evaluation framework for evaluating machine learning and information retrieval algorithms on large amounts of data. Instead of downloading data and running evaluations locally, the data will be centrally available on the cloud and algorithms to be evaluated will be programmed in computing instances on the cloud, effectively bringing the algorithms to the data. This approach allows evaluations to be performed on Terabytes of data without needing to consider the logistics of moving the data or storing the data on local infrastructure. After discussing the challenges of benchmarking on big data, the design of the VISCERAL system is presented, concentrating on the components for coordinating the participants in the benchmark and managing the ground truth creation. The first two benchmarks run on the VISCERAL framework will be on segmentation and retrieval of 3D medical images. © The Author(s).

Teamwork plays an important role in many areas of today's society, such as business activities. Thus, the question of how to form an effective team is of increasing interest. In this paper we use the team-oriented multiplayer online game Dota 2 to study cooperation within teams and the success of teams. Making use of game log data, we choose a statistical approach to identify factors that increase the chance of a team to win. The factors that we analyze are related to the roles that players can take within the game, the experiences of the players and friendship ties within a team. Our results show that such data can be used to infer social behavior patterns.

The manufacturing industry is still struggling with predictability of quality, duration and costs for the ramp-up of new products. However, new product ramp-up becomes increasingly crucial due to further shortening of product life-cycles and the pressure on more sustainable and efficient manufacturing. In this paper, we introduce an approach based on a centralized knowledge base that comprises product and process master data, equipment structure, historical measurement results and means to apply quality management methods. The approach uses a knowledge base driven workflow that ensures knowledge exchange and reuse of existing knowledge within the production line. Based on a real-world use case from semiconductor manufacturing we evaluate how well this workflow enables knowledge reuse to guide product and process engineers to support a shift from a risky ramp-up project to a predictable ramp-up process.

Size of retrieved data versus crawling time formulate a well-known dilemma in the structured Web crawling community. The real challenge within this dilemma is to optimize the settings of a given wrapper to obtain maximum available data in shortest possible time. In this paper, we try to tune these settings, by introducing a threaded algorithm that guarantees accessing all available detail pages within crawling scope;and using this algorithm, we try to reduce the time consumed by the crawler, via simple adjustments of sleeping time after each detail page visit. © 2013 ACM.

Service systems consider the co-creation of values in a process between provider and consumer with a win-win situation for both. Service-Dominant Logic demands a new view on economic activities where competences of provider and consumer are the most important resource for value creation. Given these assumptions, we investigate whether costs in a service system shall be accounted in a different way to reflect the change in view. If service provision is seen as a process, activity-based cost models seem to be appropriate. We argue that an extension is necessary, because a service is co-created by resources of service provider and consumer. Furthermore, activities performed by the consumer are not under control and therefore additional uncertainty has to be considered. Our research question is whether we are able to compute service costs with a higher degree of accuracy than with traditional cost models.

Real violence is unwanted content in video portals as it is forensically relevant in video surveillance systems. Naturally, both domains have to deal with mass data which makes the detection of violence by hand an impossible task. We introduce one component of a system for automated violence detection from video content: the differentiation of real violence and martial arts videos. In particular, we introduce two new feature transformations for jitter detection and local interest point detection with Gestalt laws. Descriptions are classified in a two-step machine learning process. The experimental results are highly encouraging: the novel features perform exceptionally well and the classification process delivers practically acceptable recall and precision.

The increasing amount of medical imaging data acquired in clinical practice holds a tremendous body of diagnostically relevant information. Only a small portion of these data are accessible during clinical routine or research due to the complexity, richness, high dimensionality and size of the data. There is consensus in the community that leaps in this regard are hampered by the lack of large bodies of data shared across research groups and an associated definition of joint challenges on which development can focus. In this paper we describe the objectives of the project Visceral. It will provide the means to jump-start this process by providing access to unprecedented amounts of real world imaging data annotated through experts and by using a community effort to generate a large corpus of automatically generated standard annotations. To this end, Visceral will conduct two competitions that tackle large scale medical image data analysis in the fields of anatomy detection, and content-based image retrieval, in this case the retrieval of similar medical cases using visual data and textual radiology reports. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
