Modern software platforms often depend on networks of user-generated content. Although such platforms are very popular, their architectural concepts and underlying system dynamics are not yet fully understood. This paper uses stigmergy, a form of indirect communication and self-organization, as basis for framing certain groups of software services in order to propose an architectural concept of stigmergic information systems and describe identified key fields (actor base, architecture, software ecosystem) inuencing them. Thus enabling the creation of better solution stack configurations needed to support effective and efficient development of such services. Copyright 2012 ACM.

TraceALL: A semantic web framework for food traceability systems

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe TraceALL which is a Semantic Web (SW), ontology-based, service-oriented framework which aims to provide the necessary infrastructure enabling food industry (particularly SMEs) to implement traceability applications using an innovative generic framework. Design/methodology/approach: The framework builds upon the idea of the Semantic Web and provides an open and extensible underlying platform that allows different traceability interconnected applications to be designed and developed. More specifically, the framework provides a formal, ontology-based, general-purpose methodology to support knowledge representation and information modelling in traceability systems. Additionally, it suggests an open application framework based on widely used Semantic Web standards. Finally it provides a set of core services for storing, processing and retrieving traceability information in a scalable way. These components, taken together, facilitate the efficient development of next generation traceability applications. Findings: Based on a case study which the authors executed as a proof of concept and studying the relevant literature it was found that TraceALL facilitates the development of next generation traceability applications because, from a food safety perspective, it enables all stakeholders in the food supply chain to have an information trail that follows the product's physical trail, but at the same time is cost effective, easy to manage and applicable within a globalised, networked, interoperable economic environment. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first food traceability system based completely on solid existing standards of the Semantic Web initiative. Traditional standards for Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), such as EDIFACT and ANSI X12, have been employed in Business-to-Business (B2B) e-commerce for decades. Due to their wide industry coverage and long-standing establishment, they will presumably continue to play an important role for some time. EDI systems are typically not process-aware, i.e., messages are standardized but processes simply emerge. However, to improve performance and to enhance the control, it is important to understand and analyze the real processes supported by these systems. In the case study presented in this paper we uncover the inter-organizational business processes of an automotive supplier company by analyzing the EDIFACT messages that it receives from its business partners. We start by transforming a set of observed messages to an event log, which requires that the individual messages are correlated to process instances. Thereby, we make use of the specific structure of EDIFACT messages. Then we apply process mining techniques to uncover the inter-organizational business processes. Our results show that inter-organizational business process models can be derived by analyzing EDI messages that are exchanged in a network of organizations. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Facing with growing data volumes and deeper analysis requirements, current development of Business Intelligence (BI) and Data warehousing systems (DWHs) is a challenging and complicated task, which largely involves in ad-hoc integration and data re-engineering. This arises an increasing requirement for a scalable application framework which can be used for the implementation and administration of diverse BI applications in a straight forward and cost-efficient way. In this context, this paper presents a large-scale application framework for standardized BI applications, supporting the ability to define and construct data warehouse processes, new data analytics capabilities as well as to support the deployment requirements of multi scalable front-end applications. The core of the framework consists of defined metadata repositories with pre-built and function specific information templates as well as application definition. Moreover, the application framework is also based on workflow mechanisms for developing and running automatic data processing tasks. Hence, the framework is capable of offering an unified reference architecture to end users, which spans various aspects of development lifecycle and can be adapted or extended to better meet application-specific BI engineering process. © 2012 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

In this paper we present a method to enrich the classical web searching with entity mining that is performed at query time. The results of entity mining (entities grouped in categories) can complement the query answers with useful for the user information which can be further exploited in a faceted search-like interaction scheme. We show that the application of entity mining over the snippets of the top-hits of the answers, can be performed at real-time. However mining over the snippets returns less entities than mining over the full contents of the hits, and for this reason we report comparative results for these two scenarios. In addition, we show how Linked Data can be exploited for specifying the entities of interest and for providing further information about the identified entities, implementing a kind of entity-based integration of documents and (semantic) data. Finally, we discuss the applicability of this approach on professional search, specifically for the domains of fisheries/aquaculture and patents. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

We focus on the detection of orthogonal vanishing points using line segments extracted from a single view, and using these for camera self-calibration. Recent methods view this problem as a two-stage process. Vanishing points are extracted through line segment clustering and subsequently likely orthogonal candidates are selected for calibration. Unfortunately, such an approach is easily distracted by the presence of clutter. Furthermore, geometric constraints imposed by the camera and scene orthogonality are not enforced during detection, leading to inaccurate results which are often inadmissible for calibration. To overcome these limitations, we present a RANSAC-based approach using a minimal solution for estimating three orthogonal vanishing points and focal length from a set of four lines, aligned with either two or three orthogonal directions. In addition, we propose to refine the estimates using an efficient and robust Maximum Likelihood Estimator. Extensive experiments on standard datasets show that our contributions result in significant improvements over the state-of-the-art.

Evaluating inter-organizational relationships (IORs) is important in todays businesses for increasing competitiveness and business potential. Typically, IORs are measured by high-level key performance indicators (KPIs) such as trust, knowledge sharing, and others. However, these high-level KPIs are difficult to be measured quantitatively. It is therefore difficult to determine IORs and their outcomes since the evaluation of IORs results in a complex and ambiguous task. In this vision paper, we propose a set of research questions dealing with measuring and evaluating IORs. Based on these research questions, we define a conceptual framework including (i) the identification of KPIs from inter-organizational processes in combination with business information derived from EDIFACT messages and (ii) the alignment of KPIs to business goals by means of the Balanced Scorecard methodology and semantic technology. Having the approach at hand supports us in lifting operational information to the business level. The alignment between KPIs and business goals allows evaluating an organizations' IORs and results in two distinct advantages. First, the explicit connection between KPIs and business goals results in a justification of the relation between IORs and business achievements. Second, the evaluation of IORs against strategic goals can be achieved semi-automatically.

Model-driven development, which has recently gained momentum in academia as well as in industry, changed the software engineering process significantly from being code-centric to being model-centric. Models are considered as the key artifacts and as a result the success of the whole software development process relies on these models and their quality. Consequently, there is an urgent need for adequate methods to ensure high quality of models. Model execution can serve as the crucial basis for such methods by enabling to automatically test and debug models. Therefore, lessons learned from testing and debugging of code may serve as a valuable source of inspiration. However, the peculiarities of models in comparison to code, such as multiple views and different abstraction levels, impede the direct adoption of existing methods for models. Thus, we claim that the currently available tool support for model testing and debugging is still insufficient because these peculiarities are not adequately addressed. In this work, we aim at tackling these shortcomings by proposing a novel model execution environment based on fUML, which enables to efficiently test and debug UML models.

WS-BPEL is de-facto industry standard for business processes. One of its major shortcomings is lack of temporal management capabilities. WS-BPEL offers no possibility for definition, calculation and monitoring of temporal values such as activity duration and deadlines as well as checking the temporal conformance of processes. This paper tackles temporal management of WS-BPEL based on two different techniques: interval-based and probabilistic. This paper describes temporal management of cooperating WS-BPEL abstract and executable processes. We have implemented a temporal management prototype as a WS-BPEL extension. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Query expansion is a crucial step in recall-oriented domains such as Patent Searching. Currently, automatic query expansion in patent search is mostly based on statistical measures. Additional query terms are extracted from the query documents based on entropy measures. To automate query expansion in patent searching, we acquire lexical knowledge from Query Logs of USPTO Patent Examiners. Results show good performance in query expansion and patent searching using the lexical database. This will help improving (semi-) automated query expansion in patent searching.
