In this work, we present an object recognition infrastructure that can be adapted to the needs of a broad spectrum of tasks without writing a single line of code. Instead, it can be configured to generate various visual features and to perform training and recognition. The configuration format is quite simple and tools to generate these configurations make it easy to use even for developers with little computer vision experience. New algorithms and approaches can be added in a reusable way and further tools are provided to cover all parts of object recognition applications from data acquisition over execution and storage to the final result presentation. Moreover, performance considerations have been taken into account to enable the reuse of intermediate results and to support multiprocessor architectures. We demonstrate the use of the proposed infrastructure in a case study and mention tasks where it has already been used.

Action scenes usually contain higher motion activity than other scenes in feature films while showing events like fights, gun shots and car crashes. This work investigates motion and event detection to separate action scenes from non-action scenes. In contrast to existing work, the proposed system does not consider the shot structure of video. The approach uses SVMs to classify GIST-based global motion features, SIFT-based local motion features, and bag of MPEG-7 ColorLayout features. Two test sets of Hollywood movies and user generated action movies are used to evaluate the system. The results of a frame-level evaluation indicate that especially, the global motion approach represents a good tradeoff between accuracy and speed. A scene-level evaluation shows that the combined system compares well to existing shot-based approaches.

Standardized business documents are a prerequisite for successful information exchange in electronic business transactions. The United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and eBusiness (UN/CEFACT) provides a conceptual modeling approach, called Core Components, used by Business Partners (BPs) for defining business document models (BDMs). These BDMs are essential for defining service interfaces in service-oriented systems. However, in such a highly dynamic environment with ever-changing market demands, BPs are confronted with the need to revise their BDMs resulting in new versions of BDMs. Furthermore, BPs may dictate the use of new versions of BDMs. However, small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may not always adopt new BDM versions due to the cost and effort involved, inhibiting electronic information exchange. In this paper, we present a framework for dealing with interoperability issues in service-oriented systems through providing BPs with Business Document Interoperability as a Service. Having such a framework at hand provides SMEs with a low-cost and light-weight approach for dealing with evolving market requirements and hence evolving business documents. Furthermore, we present a prototypical implementation as well as an evaluation of the framework proposed.

Using prevalent teaching methods, such as classroom teaching, art historical facts can be tedious to communicate. Especially when it concentrates on teaching artists names, artworks and their corresponding era of art. Knowing about the cultural-historical background of art history can play an important role in raising a student's interest in contemporary culture and cultural heritage. We propose the online multiplayer Serious Game ThIATRO that helps students learn art history. This playful approach is intended to not only increases the motivation to learn but also compel the player to think about, organize and use information in ways that encourage active construction of knowledge.

IT security is a vital task; user authentication a fundamental part. Yet the policies to implement user authentication often have a poor cost/benefit ratio. This paper (i) analyzes the costs of typical user authentication policies based on interviews with large Austrian IT providers. It (ii) then elaborates on how the policies are chosen, focusing on a lack of real cost accounting, and risk averse principal agents in the security departments.

In recent years, sophisticated visualization methods have been developed to support both, the logical structure and the time-oriented aspects of computer-executable clinical treatment plans. However, visualizing the effects of applying treatment plans as well as supporting the exploration of effects on the patient's condition are still largely unresolved tasks. To fill this gap, we have developed a prototype that enhances known visualization methods to communicate the processes of treatment plan application together with their effects on a patient's condition in an easily understandable way. Our prototype combines the advantages of enhanced visual recognition of patterns with traditional information of parameters' development. Thus, it provides means (1) to assess success or failure of previously applied treatment plans, (2) to explore the effects of each applied clinical action on the patient's condition, and (3) to identify sub-optimal treatment choices. These means help physicians to optimize their treatment choices and enable developers of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) to investigate and readjust these treatment plans.

Traditional public notice areas (PNAs) are nowadays a popular means to publicly exchange information and reach people of a local community. The high usability led to a wide-spread use in stores, cafes, supermarkets, and public institutions. With public displays permeating public spaces and with display providers and owners being willing to share parts of their display space we envision traditional PNAs to be complemented or even replaced by their digital counterparts in the future, hence contributing to making public displays a novel communication medium. In this paper we report on the design and development of Digifieds (derived from digital classified), a digital public notice area. We deployed and evaluated Digifieds in an urban environment in the context of the UbiChallenge 2011 in Oulu, Finland over the course of 6 months. The deployment allowed the users' view to be studied with regard to the envisioned content, preferred interaction techniques, as well as privacy concerns, and to compare them against traditional PNAs. © 2011 ACM.

Medical care, particularly for chronic diseases, accumulates a huge amount of patient data over extensive time periods that needs to be accessed and analyzed accordingly. Information Visualization methods hold great promises in turning data deluge into improved quality of medical care. Yet, patient data management systems mostly provide documents, form-based displays, or static visualizations. We present a design study of an interactive visualization system, called VisuExplore, to support long-term care and medical analysis of patients with chronic diseases. VisuExplore offers interaction techniques for effective exploration of time-oriented data and employs simple, but intuitive visualization techniques. It was developed in close cooperation with physicians. We conducted two user studies with nine physicians and 16 students, which indicate that our design is useful and appropriate for particular tasks. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin.

New interaction techniques beyond mouse and keyboard were established during the last five years allowing different and multiple modalities. The aim of our work was to study how users work with a touch device, which can be used as a basis for designing natural user interfaces optimized for touch. We developed an evaluation concept for a single-versus multitouch scenario. Applying this concept we studied users' strategies, accuracy and completion times in performing the three evaluation tasks: moving virtual objects by touching, typing with a virtual keyboard and using touch menus to select options. The user tests were performed on a Microsoft Surface during the open day at our university. Results of the evaluation showed that our two user groups "beginners" and "professionals" directly profit from the natural interaction concepts of a touch interface, like for example direct manipulation, except for scenarios where a haptic feedback is helpful to minimize input errors. Both groups only differ in using a virtual keyboard due to training effects. Additional, the intuitive usage and novelty of a touch device seemed to motivate the participants in accomplishing the tasks. © 2011 IADIS.

Realization of 3D virtual world platform for the basic education of adult illiterates

Illiteracy is a dilemma, around more than 700 million adults in the world are illiterate. Along with the traditional approaches, technology has been used for last three decades for literacy programs. These techno-literacy solutions exploited two-dimensional (2D) spaces with multimodal interfaces to augment learning for illiterates. These multimodal interfaces offer audio and visual features, recommended in learning theories. However many other features such as self-presence, social-presence, situated-learning, embodied environment etc suggested in these learning theories are yet to be included in these techno-literacy solutions to further their learning. In present era, emerging three-dimensional (3D) Virtual Worlds (VW) have potential to provide these lacking features and many others. These 3D VWs have already proved their importance in other disciplines such as higher education and business;however never been investigated for Adult Basic Education (ABE). In this paper, we explore how the benefits of 3D emergent technologies like Second Life (SL) are exploited in coherence with traditional theories for ABE. We present an immersive learning platform based on Multiple Intelligences (MI) Theory. We design and discuss an adaptive learning scenario for ABE in the SL. Finally we scrutinize the proposed platform to get an overview of the strengths and weaknesses in the intended area of application. © Rinton Press.
