Vehicular Fog Computing (VFC) is a promising paradigm in intelligent transportation systems (ITS), which offloads computation-intensive tasks to mobile fog nodes for real-time and low-latency services. In the forthcoming era of low-altitude economy, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are being integrated as task-carrying entities into the ITS, and the novel low-altitude VFC is witnessing new challenges, introduced by dynamic UAV missions, high mobility, and privacy concerns. To preserve the offloading privacy and enhance the offloading performance in the dynamic low-altitude VFC, in this paper, we facilitate the learning-based methods and propose a hierarchical federated reinforcement learning framework. The framework consists of two levels: the local level provides Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) models for task vehicles and UAVs, and the cross-regional contextual level for coordinating the local experiences. At the local DRL level, we design an Attention-enhanced Federated Proximal Policy Optimization (AFedPPO) algorithm to enable decentralized training and execution (DTDE) for task offloading, which is privacy-preserving, effective, and scalable for the low-altitude VFC systems. At the cross-regional level, we introduce a contextual clustering and personalized (CCP) federated learning (FL) mechanism, which adaptively aggregates the local experiences according to the regional features. Extensive simulation results validate an average 35% improvement of the proposed framework compared to the state-of-the-art FL schemes, and in some cases, even outperform the centralized training (CTDE) baseline. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to theoretically discuss how contextual information can enhance the performance of the DRL-based offloading strategy under FL settings. © 2020 IEEE.

Automation is one of the key drivers in today's global economy. It ensures the conduction of a manifold of standardized processes which helps tackle the decreasing amount of skilled workers in certain areas as well as reducing cost. Although automation is broadly used nowadays, the overall applicability of automated processes is often limited to use cases with predefined process steps of minor flexibility. However, new and upcoming sustainable industries that are focusing on product life-cycle prolonging (e.g. repair, refurbish, and remanufacture (3Rs)) options to enable Circular Economy-friendly treatment, require a high amount of adaptability in automated systems to tackle the high variability of product compositions in disassembly scenarios. The goal of the conducted case study is therefore to investigate the possibilities of a nowadays available of-the-shelf automation system regarding its functions and mechanisms towards enabling automated adaptability by using disassembly scenarios of component groups consisting of different building blocks as an example scenario and the concluding future research areas. The paper, therefore, investigates the different methods offered by the default system and applies them to various levels of disassembly scenarios. The conducted study helps to clarify the capabilities of the system's functionalities in the overall goal to enhance adaptability in disassembly processes. © 2025 IEEE.

In the era of Industry 4.0 and individualized mass customization, the demand for adaptable manufacturing systems is paramount. Therefore, assembly plans used in such systems must also allow a high degree of flexibility to adapt to changing requirements and conditions. At the same time, they must still guarantee the successful execution of the assembly process. In this paper, we present a novel approach to modeling assembly plans in the context of an ongoing, larger project in which we intend to implement flexible manufacturing in a real production cell. In our assembly plans, we specifically emphasize flexibility regarding the order of assembly steps, the allocation of appropriate teams of robots to execute these steps with applicable parts, and the ability to respond to failures in the system. We present a comprehensible modeling of flexible assembly plans, accompanied by the semantics of Petri nets, illustrated by example, and comparatively evaluated against other approaches. © 2024 The Authors. Considering the concept of a Circular Economy, which entails several life cycles of, e.g., vehicles, their components, and materials, it is important to investigate how the respective Digital Twins are managed over the lifecycle of their physical assets. This publication presents and compares three approaches for managing Digital Twins in industrial use cases. For the aggregation of these approaches, a user-centered design approach has been used in the research project Catena-X which focuses on the automotive industry. The results are analyzed qualitatively based on aspects such as data ownership and data sovereignty. It was identified, that all three approaches have limitations and benefits which make them useful in different scenarios. An overview of their strengths and weaknesses is presented to select an appropriate approach In similar setups. The results described in this publication can be used to select the best update approach in data spaces where multiple stakeholders are able to update information on a single asset. © 2025 The Authors.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disease that has severe impacts on an individual’s quality of life. Compared with structural and functional MRI-based biomarkers for the disease, electroencephalography (EEG) can provide more accessible alternatives for clinical insights. While deep learning (DL) techniques have provided excellent outcomes, many techniques fail to model spatial information and dynamic brain connectivity, and face challenges in robust feature learning, limited data sizes, and poor explainability. To address these issues, we proposed a novel graph neural network (GNN) technique for explainable PD detection using resting state EEG. Specifically, we employ structured global convolutions with contrastive learning to better model complex features with limited data, a novel multi-head graph structure learner to capture the non-Euclidean structure of EEG data, and a head-wise gradient-weighted graph attention explainer to offer neural connectivity insights. We developed and evaluated our method using the UC San Diego Parkinson’s disease EEG dataset, and achieved 69.40% detection accuracy in subject-wise leave-one-out cross-validation while generating intuitive explanations for the learnt graph topology. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Predicting water quality is essential to preserving human health and environmental sustainability. Traditional water quality assessment methods often face scalability and real-time monitoring limitations. With accuracies of 62%, 72%, 83%, 69%, 63%, 66%, 71%, 63%, and 64%, respectively, the current techniques utilized were Logistic Regression, Decision Trees, Random Forest Regressor, Extreme Gradient Boosting, Naive Bayes, K-nearest neighbors, Support Vector Machine, AdaBoost, and Bagging [9]. This study addresses these challenges by leveraging Adaptive Synthetic Sampling (ADASYN) to balance the dataset and evaluating model performance on datasets of 5,000 and 10,000 entries per class. A robust dataset obtained from Kaggle was used, with five models – Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Feed Forward Neural Network (FFNN), Categorical Boosting (CatBoost), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Random Forest – evaluated and compared. The proposed methods demonstrate significant improvements in accuracy, with XGBoost achieving the highest accuracy of 95.53%, followed by Random Forest at 93.98%. This work underscores the importance of advanced machine learning techniques in addressing the limitations of traditional methods, enhancing accuracy, scalability, and adaptability in water quality prediction. These findings contribute to advancing environmental monitoring and management practices with reliable, data-driven insights. © 2025 IEEE.

Background: Recently, e-learning has become a very basic, integral part of technology-based learning. Wide trends are increasing day by day because of the demands and its usage based on working remotely due to highly penetrated mobile handheld devices and digital media. The smart campus infrastructure has played a vital role to its full extent towards Z millennium students in the 20th century. The teaching and learning accessibility depends on terms of various cost-based afforda-ble platforms, either with synchronous learning or asynchronous mode of learning. Methods: The current patent research explores the changeling leading to infrastructural reforms as per the need for digital media for e-learning during and after COVID-19 spreads. The perspectives in 2 forms of research study are: 1st working on infrastructural needs and demands for the smart campuses and online learning challenges and 2nd is working on platforms technology utilization for better accessible resources for all learners. This work studied different aspects during and after COVID-19, leading to the importance of uninterrupted internet access, phone, hardware and relia-bility, etc. In this work, the importance of gamification study and flipped classrooms for enhancing learner performance to highly engage them in learning environments focused research model on learner engagement on Gamified perceiving study with Smart PLS-SEM was investigated. Promoting sustainability in its entirety through knowledge transfer and contributions to address various challenges in the redesign of learners' syllabi to meet educational needs, emphasizing online learning to integrate various modes of learner platforms, personalized teaching and learn-ing, peer-to-peer communication for learner enhancement, and student engagement through gami-fication are studied. Tube thoracostomy (chest tube insertion) is a surgical procedure that treats pneumothorax, a potentially life threatening condition where air accumulates between the chest wall and the lungs. The literature reports high complication rates for this procedure, including accidental fatality due to poor manual depth control during tool insertion. We hypothesize that an instrumented needle-holder could help operators recognize pleural puncture and improve depth control, and we present a puncture-detection experiment that contributes toward this goal. An operator manually inserted a bevel-tip needle into ex vivo porcine ribs and through the parietal pleura via a sensorized percutaneous device that records position, force, and videos. We use this rich dataset of 63 insertions to thoroughly test four previously published data-driven puncture-detection (DDPD) algorithms against two new real-time algorithms: a custom recursive digital filter with coefficients optimized for our application, and a difference equation that compares standard deviations between adjacent sliding windows. Our algorithms achieve a precision (true positives over total identified punctures) of 23% and 22%, respectively, while the precision of existing DDPD algorithms ranges from 0% to 21%. Despite these performance improvements, our results show the limitations of DDPD algorithms and motivate new methods for detecting pleural membrane punctures in thoracostomy. © 2018 IEEE.

Maternal health is among the greatest challenges in the world, especially in rural areas as there lack medical practitioners, they do not have easily accessible publics clinics and transport is difficult. Therefore, high rates of maternal as well as infant morbidity and mortalities are recorded. This research utilizes Artificial Intelligence (AI) with machine learning algorithms to forecast and address maternal health hazards right at their onset stage. The current research utilizes the concept of AI along with many Machine Learning (ML) methods like the Ensemble Learning Model (ELM), Random Forest (RF), K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), Decision-Tree (DT), XG-Boost (XGB), Cat Boost (CB), and Gradient Boosting (GB), along with Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) algorithm used for dealing with the problem class imbalance within the data set. SMOTE algorithm is utilized for the dataset balancing process. The handling system involves refining data preprocessing with the help of feature engineering and robust data cleaning which makes sure that anomalies do not erode the reliability of the predictive model. The existing methods [1] used RF (90%), DT (87%), XGB (85%), CB (86%), and GB (81%) algorithms and were compared with the accuracies of the proposed models like Logistic Regression (LR), Ensemble Learning Bagging (ELB), Ensemble Learning Stacking (ELS), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). The existing methods used only imbalance dataset. The accuracies of the proposed models with using SMOTE algorithm (balanced dataset) are LR (61.33%), KNN (81%), ELB (92.33%), ELS (90.66%) CNN (40.67%), RNN (59.67%), LSTM (54%), GRU (56%) respectively. Among these methods, ELB achieved 92.33% of accuracy with using SMOTE algorithm using imbalanced dataset. Whereas the accuracies of the proposed models without using SMOTE algorithm (imbalanced dataset) are LR (66.09%), KNN (68.47%)

An Isochron-Based Solution to Pursuit–Evasion Games of Two Heterogeneous Players

In this article, we study a pursuit–evasion game between two players with heterogeneous kinematics, where the pursuer is with damped double-integrator dynamics and the evader is with single-integrator dynamics. The pursuer aims at capturing the evader as soon as possible, while the evader wants to avoid or delay the capture. Traditional methods to solve pursuit–evasion games rely on the Hamilton–Jacobi–Isaacs (HJI) equations and retrogressive path equations, which are very complicated and nonintuitive, thus failing to obtain a complete solution. To overcome these challenges, we develop an intuitive isochron-based method to thoroughly analyze all possible situations of the game and a concise geometric approach to calculate the optimal strategies, providing a complete solution to this game. Specifically, the isochron-based method effectively leverages three main factors: the players' motion capability, the pursuer's capture capability, and the players' states. Based on these, we analyze the players' superiority and the geometrical features of their isochrones and the intersections, thus acquiring concise conditions that determine the game's outcome. For the success-capture cases, we propose a new geometric approach to calculate the target points of the players and then obtain the closed-loop state feedback optimal pursuit and evasion strategies. We then get the corresponding value function and provide a validation using the HJI equation. For the success-evasion cases, we exploit the intersection of the players' isochrones to design some effective evasion strategies, which ensure that the evader can always avoid or delay the capture. Finally, some numerical simulations are carried out to validate the effectiveness and applicability of our results. © 1963-2012 IEEE.
