In the development of any type of magnetic field sensor based on magnetic films, special consideration must be given to the magnetic layer component. The presented work investigates the use of flux closing magnetostrictive multilayers for inverse magnetoelectric sensors. In such a type of magnetic field sensor, highly sensitive AC and DC field detection relies on strong excitation of the incorporated magnetic layers by piezoelectrically driven cantilever oscillation at mechanical resonances. The provoked periodic flux change is influenced by the magnetic field to be measured and is picked up by a coil, which generates the measured output. The effect of the magnetic multilayer on linearity, noise behavior, and detection limit of DC and AC signals is investigated. This study demonstrates the next step for inverse magnetoelectric thin film sensors, which achieve one order of magnitude improved detection limits with less than 8 pT/Hz1/2 at 10 Hz and 18 pT/Hz1/2 at DC using exchange bias stabilized magnetic multilayers for obtaining flux closure. Edge computing solves massive data processing problems by utilizing the storage and computing functions of edge devices. Due to the openness of edge computing, distracted devices inevitably participate in edge computing and affect the network computing performance, which degrades trust management of edge devices. To solve the above issue, this paper proposes a trust management framework based on blockchain for edge computing scenarios (ECTMF). First, the ECTMF framework slices users and provides corresponding services based on different requirements. It evaluates the trustworthiness of end devices and distinguishes distracted devices in edge computing. Then, the Proof of Monitor (PoM) consensus mechanism is proposed to continuously monitor distracted end devices in edge computing. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology to enhance the spectral efficiency of wireless communication systems. By optimizing the RIS elements, the performance of the overall system can be improved. Yet, in contrast to single-carrier systems, in multi-carrier systems, it is not possible to independently optimize RIS elements at each sub-carrier, which may reduce the benefits of RIS in multi-user orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. To this end, we investigate the effectiveness of RIS in multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) OFDM broadcast channels (BC). We formulate and solve a joint precoding and RIS optimization problem. We show that RIS can significantly improve the system performance even when the number of RIS elements per sub-band is very low.

The outstanding thermoelectric performance of GeTe has attracted significant attention in the research community in recent years. However, many of the underlying physical mechanisms that contribute to GeTe's exceptionally high figure of merit (zT) remain not fully understood. In this study, an Sb-Bi codoped GeTe single crystal (Ge0.86Sb0.08Bi0.06)Te with an ultrahigh zT of 2.7 at 700 K and a record high device zT of 1.41 in the temperature range of 300-773 K was synthesized and investigated. The ultrahigh zT is attributed to the extremely low lattice thermal conductivity induced by strong electron-phonon (EP) interactions as revealed by the experimentally observed Kohn anomaly, through inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. First-principles calculations further demonstrate that the remarkable EP interaction arises from the Fermi surface nesting featured in a one-dimensional (double-walled) topology. Our finding unravels the ultrahigh-zT mechanism in GeTe-based materials, serving as an inspiring guide toward high thermoelectric performance. © 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Lameness, characterized by an anomalous gait in cows due to a dysfunction in their locomotive system, is a serious welfare issue for cows and farmers. Prompt lameness detection methods can prevent the development of acute lameness in cattle. In this study, we propose a deep learning framework to help identify lameness based on motion curves of different leg joints on the cow. The framework combines data augmentation and a convolutional neural network using an LeNet architecture. Performance assessed using cross validation showed promising prediction accuracies above 99% and 91% for validation and test sets, respectively. This also demonstrates the usefulness of data generation in cases where the data set is originally small in size and difficult to generate. This paper starts by considering an optimal control formulation of the consensus problem on complete graphs with a cost capturing disagreement and agents modeled by integrators. An optimal control policy for this problem is shown to be the well-known consensus algorithm by which each agent resets its state to the average of its and other agents' state values received at every time step. The framework is extended to the case where agents can only exchange information periodically, with a period larger than one. Then an event-triggered control strategy is proposed that results in a better cost than that of the optimal periodic one with the same average transmission rate, that is, it is consistent. According to this strategy, each agent distributedly transmits its state if the error between its current state and a common consensus estimate based on previously transmitted agents' data exceeds a threshold. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the proposed strategy.

Age is an essential factor in modern diagnostic procedures. However, assessment of the true biological age (BA) remains a daunting task due to the lack of reference ground-truth labels. Current BA estimation approaches are either restricted to skeletal images or rely on non-imaging modalities that yield a whole-body BA assessment. However, various organ systems may exhibit different aging characteristics due to lifestyle and genetic factors. In this initial study, we propose a new framework for organ-specific BA estimation utilizing 3D magnetic resonance image (MRI) scans. As a first step, this framework predicts the chronological age (CA) together with the corresponding patient-dependent aleatoric uncertainty. An iterative training algorithm is then utilized to segregate atypical aging patients from the given population based on the predicted uncertainty scores. In this manner, we hypothesize that training a new model on the remaining population should approximate the true BA behavior. We apply the proposed methodology on a brain MRI dataset containing healthy individuals as well as Alzheimer's patients. We demonstrate the correlation between the predicted BAs and the expected cognitive deterioration in Alzheimer's patients.

With increasing numbers of mobile robots arriving in real-world applications, more robots coexist in the same space, interact, and possibly collaborate. Methods to provide such systems with system size scalability are known, for example, from swarm robotics. Example strategies are self-organizing behavior, a strict decentralized approach, and limiting the robot-robot communication. Despite applying such strategies, any multi-robot system breaks above a certain critical system size (i.e., number of robots) as too many robots share a resource (e.g., space, communication channel). We provide additional evidence based on simulations, that at these critical system sizes, the system performance separates into two phases: nearly optimal and minimal performance. We speculate that in real-world applications that are configured for optimal system size, the supposedly high-performing system may actually live on borrowed time as it is on a transient to breakdown. Individuals age differently depending on a multitude of different factors such as lifestyle, medical history and genetics. Often, the global chronological age is not indicative of the true ageing process. An organ-based age estimation would yield a more accurate health state assessment. In this work, we propose a new deep learning architecture for organ-based age estimation based on magnetic resonance images (MRI). The proposed network is a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) with increased depth and width made possible by the hybrid utilization of inception and fire modules. We apply the proposed framework for the tasks of brain and knee age estimation. Quantitative comparisons against concurrent MR-based regression networks and different 2D and 3D data feeding strategies illustrated the superior performance of the proposed work.
