Active magnetic bearings (AMBs) have many advantages over traditional oil bearings due to their non-contact characteristics. They are environmentally friendly solution and have been proven to be highly reliable and available. Electromagnetic coils are vital components of AMB and they are failure prone. In this paper, the failure mode of magnetic bearing coil and its corresponding failure mechanism are reviewed by FMMEA method, and the existing coil fault diagnosis methods are introduced. Future directions for coil insulation health monitoring aiming at the application characteristics of AMBs are also discussed. © 2023 IEEE.

Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) spectromicroscopy is a powerful technique that enables label-free detection of chemical bonds with high specificity. However, the low Raman cross section due to typical far-electronic resonance excitation seriously restricts the sensitivity and undermines its application to bio-imaging. To address this bottleneck, the electronic preresonance (EPR) SRS technique has been developed to enhance the Raman signals by shifting the excitation frequency toward the molecular absorption. A fundamental weakness of the previous demonstration is the lack of dual-wavelength tunability, making EPR-SRS only applicable to a limited number of species in the proof-of-concept experiment. Here, we demonstrate the EPR-SRS spectromicroscopy using a multiple-plate continuum (MPC) light source able to examine a single vibration mode with independently adjustable pump and Stokes wavelengths. In our experiments, the C═C vibration mode of Alexa 635 is interrogated by continuously scanning the pump-to-absorption frequency detuning throughout the entire EPR region enabled by MPC. The results exhibit 150-fold SRS signal enhancement and good agreement with the Albrecht A-term preresonance model. Signal enhancement is also observed in EPR-SRS images of the whole Drosophila brain stained with Alexa 635. With the improved sensitivity and potential to implement hyperspectral measurement, we envision that MPC-EPR-SRS spectromicroscopy can bring the Raman techniques closer to a routine in bio-imaging. © 2023 American Chemical Society.

We introduce a novel differentially private algorithm for online federated learning that employs temporally correlated noise to enhance utility while ensuring privacy of continuously released models. To address challenges posed by DP noise and local updates with streaming non-iid data, we develop a perturbed iterate analysis to control the impact of the DP noise on the utility. Moreover, we demonstrate how the drift errors from local updates can be effectively managed under a quasi-strong convexity condition. Subject to an (ϵ, δ)DP budget, we establish a dynamic regret bound over the entire time horizon, quantifying the impact of key parameters and the intensity of changes in dynamic environments. Numerical experiments confirm the efficacy of the proposed algorithm. © 2024, CC BY.

The proposed work suggests a novel approach for the cooperation of geographically scattered individuals and the blending of different points of view. This work ensures that the center on heterogeneous networks in which nodes support both long-range low-rate Radio Frequency (RF) interfaces (like cellular) and short-range high-rate RF interfaces (such as IEEE802.11) that communicate over urban Rayleigh fading channels. These interfaces are used to connect the devices. The interfaces are what are used to link the various gadgets. This research work proposes and evaluates a wide variety of hierarchically distributed cooperation strategies that can function despite resource restrictions such as limited short-range RF bandwidth. These strategies are contained within the confines of this paradigm, which serves as the framework for proposed work. Post Soft-Demodulation Combining, often referred to as PSDC, and Priority Maximum Ratio Combining are the two approaches that come highly recommended by our team (PMRC). This work provides evidence that using the offered methods increases throughput, reliability, and signal-to-noise ratio. Moreover, this study found that PMRC and PSDC have the ability to improve throughput performance by more than an order of magnitude across a wide range of communication circumstances. © 2023 IEEE.

SPE’s Drilling systems Automation Technical Section (DSATS) sponsors the Drillbotics® autonomous drilling contest to promote advanced learning at participating universities. Two groups worked separately to drill a directional well hands-free and to connect to a well model to detect/close in a kick. This paper consolidates the efforts of both teams. Team A, the directional drilling team from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Ghana, developed a virtual model that replicated full-scale directional drilling operations, facilitating the development and testing of innovative control schemes and automation strategies. Leveraging state-of-the-art drilling software, real-time data analytics, and advanced control systems, the project demonstrated the potential of automated drilling technologies across both the planning and execution phases of drilling projects. Team B, from Technical University Clausthal (TUC) in Germany, designed and built a mini-rig that included a working scaled version of a rotary steerable system (RSS) tool to steer a wellbore through a block of sandstone to reach two non-planer targets. The work incorporates machine learning techniques to evaluate downhole sensor data and improve steering signal input. The modular design of the second-generation surface actuation system offers a more compact and efficient solution than its predecessor. The control architecture and network protocols are analyzed, demonstrating network delays of under 2 msec using a refined second-generation translator setup. The achievements of both teams are important to the future of drilling automation, as their approaches could be used to verify and validate third-party app’s communications prior to field release on full-scale rigs. In this article, a novel approach for merging 3D point cloud maps in the context of egocentric multi-robot exploration is presented. Unlike traditional methods, the proposed approach leverages state-of-the-art place recognition and learned descriptors to efficiently detect overlap between maps, eliminating the need for the time-consuming global feature extraction and feature matching process. The estimated overlapping regions are used to calculate a homogeneous rigid transform, which serves as an initial condition for the GICP point cloud registration algorithm to refine the alignment between the maps. The advantages of this approach include faster processing time, improved accuracy, and increased robustness in challenging environments. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed framework is successfully demonstrated through multiple field missions of robot exploration in a variety of different underground environments. We address distributed learning problems, both nonconvex and convex, over undirected networks. In particular, we design a novel algorithm based on the distributed Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) to address the challenges of high communication costs, and large datasets. Our design tackles these challenges i) by enabling the agents to perform multiple local training steps between each round of communications;and ii) by allowing the agents to employ stochastic gradients while carrying out local computations. We show that the proposed algorithm converges to a neighborhood of a stationary point, for nonconvex problems, and of an optimal point, for convex problems. We also propose a variant of the algorithm to incorporate variance reduction thus achieving exact convergence. We show that the resulting algorithm indeed converges to a stationary (or optimal) point, and moreover that local training accelerates convergence. We thoroughly compare the proposed algorithms with the state of the art, both theoretically and through numerical results. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This article presents a 17.7-20.2 GHz eight-element four-beam RF-beamforming transmitter in 65-nm CMOS for satellite communication (SATCOM). The transmitter utilizes an analog scheme in the variable-gain amplifier (VGA) to achieve dB-in-linear gain control with a high dynamic range (DR), together with a current combining crossbar for a compact footprint. The vector-modulation-based (VM-based) phase shifter (PS) adopts the cancellation-based Gm units for low switching variation. Furthermore, eight PSs of each beam are split into two groups, with each group sharing the same tunable I/Q generator for low power consumption. Considering the increased peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) caused by high-order modulation schemes and multibeam operation, the transmitter incorporates compact transformer-based Doherty power amplifiers (DPAs) with adaptive bias control to improve the power efficiency at back-off. The chip achieves a 31-dB gain-tuning range with a 0.283-dB step and a 360° phase-shifting range with a calibrated 7-bit resolution. The measured root-mean-square (RMS) phase/gain errors induced by the VGA/PS are below 2.05°/0.147 dB, respectively, which decouples phase/gain control. The transmitter achieves a maximum output 1-dB gain compression point (OP1dB) of 17.9 dBm and a maximum saturated power (Psat) of 18.9 dBm. The output element exhibits 29.3% drain efficiency (DE) at 6-dB power back off (PBO) from Psat , which is 1.56/3.12 times over the normalized class-B/class-A implementations, demonstrating Doherty PBO efficiency enhancement. The chip occupies an area of 8.59 × 4.17 mm2 and consumes 398 mW per element at OP1dB. Additionally, a 16-element linear array has been developed to showcase the capabilities of the multibeam operation and gain tapering. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

This article deals with the development of an intelligent fuzzy logic controller for solid-state transfer switch toward fast fault detection and power transfer to the alternative feeder. A set of fuzzy rules are developed for the controller which in turn shift the loads from the preferred feeder to the alternate feeder with quality power resolving fault interruption or voltage sags. The voltage and the current control loop generate a signal to the fuzzy control block to provide an on or off pulse for the switches upon activate fuzzy rules in the interference engine. In this article, a compilation of 35%, 50%, 70%, and 100% faults are created to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy controller toward detecting fault levels and transferring power to the desired feeder. It was discovered that the proposed fuzzy logic controller detects faults in the range of 0.054 to 0.061 milliseconds and transfers power in the range of 1.742 to 3.107 ms, which is significantly faster and more reliable than the existing literature. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

We discuss a control strategy to handle singularity of input gain matrix in the input-output linearization of a dynamical system with multiple outputs. The key idea is to prioritize the outputs and designate available control inputs to the outputs in the order of priority, by which tracking control for higher priority outputs is possibly maintained even in the presence of the singularity. This strategy of prioritization (called the prioritized control) allows to successfully deal with critical control objectives (such as stability and/or collision avoidance) by assigning higher priority to the relevant outputs. In this paper, we first explain how the prioritization can be applied to the process of input-output linearization and provide a definition of the prioritized control law on the framework of the multi-objective optimization with the lexicographical ordering. Then, a simple case study is performed for a two-link manipulator along with simulation results, where we further discuss an intrinsic degenerate property of prioritization that the prioritized control law can be discontinuous.
