Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a promising enabling technology for the next-generation wireless networks, as it complements radio-frequency (RF)-based communications by providing wider bandwidth, higher data rates, and immunity to interference from electromagnetic sources. However, due to its unique characteristics, VLC is highly sensitive to the line-of-sight (LoS) blockage. Recently, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been proposed as an innovative solution that dynamically reconfigures the wireless environment. The present contribution proposes a two-stage resource management framework in an indoor VLC system: In the first stage, a maximum possible fairness (MPF) algorithm is presented in order to maximize the fairness amongst the users. In the second stage, deep Q-learning is exploited in order to maximize the overall spectral efficiency (SE). The corresponding numerical results have shown that the proposed DQL-MPF framework exhibits superior performance in terms of both the overall SE and Jain's Fair Index, achieved at a fast convergence rate. More specifically, when the noise power is high and the number of users is relatively large, the DQL-MPF algorithm achieves a more than tenfold overall SE compared to the Baseline scheme. Moreover, the synergy between the MPF and the DQL algorithms is investigated. To this end, we demonstrate that the MPF algorithm maximizes the fairness amongst the users while the DQL algorithm maximizes the overall SE and improves the robustness against the noise. Our results also highlight the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in leveraging the increasing number of IRS elements for optimized performance. © 2023 The Authors.

We propose a novel framework for incorporating unlabeled data into semi-supervised classification problems, where scenarios involving the minimization of either i) adversarially robust or ii) non-robust loss functions have been considered. Notably, we allow the unlabeled samples to deviate slightly (in total variation sense) from the in-domain distribution. The core idea behind our framework is to combine Distributionally Robust Optimization (DRO) with self-supervised training. As a result, we also leverage efficient polynomial-time algorithms for the training stage. From a theoretical standpoint, we apply our framework on the classification problem of a mixture of two Gaussians in Rd, where in addition to the m independent and labeled samples from the true distribution, a set of n (usually with n m) out of domain and unlabeled samples are given as well. Using only the labeled data, it is known that the generalization error can be bounded by ∝ (d/m)1/2. However, using our method on both isotropic and non-isotropic Gaussian mixture models, one can derive a new set of analytically explicit and non-asymptotic bounds which show substantial improvement on the generalization error compared to ERM. Our results underscore two significant insights: 1) out-of-domain samples, even when unlabeled, can be harnessed to narrow the generalization gap, provided that the true data distribution adheres to a form of the "cluster assumption", and 2) the semi-supervised learning paradigm can be regarded as a special case of our framework when there are no distributional shifts. We validate our claims through experiments conducted on a variety of synthetic and real-world datasets. © 2024 12th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2024. The purpose of this note is to correct an error made by Con et al. (2023), specifically in the proof of Theorem 9. Here we correct the proof but as a consequence we get a slightly weaker result. In Theorem9, we claimed that for integers k and n such that k q RS code that can decode from n - 2k + 1 insdel errors where (Formula presented). Here we prove the following. Theorem 1: For integers n and k q RS-code, where (Formula presented) is a prime power, that can decode from n - 2k + 1 adversarial insdel errors. Note that the exponent of n is 4k - 3 whereas in Theorem 9 it is 4k - 4. For constant dimensional codes, the field size is of order O(n4k-3) , and in particular, for k = 2 the field size is of order O(n5) . © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Various training-based spatial filtering methods have been proposed to classify steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, many overlook the temporal instability of SSVEPs, leading to decreased classification performance. Therefore, we propose an SSVEP decoding method that calculates template signals and spatial filters using the subject's impulse responses and periodic impulses, incorporating the temporally local correlation coefficient in the SSVEP decoding process. Then, we employ a combined correlation coefficient for SSVEP classification. The proposed method addresses the temporal instability of SSVEPs, with template signals that exhibit strong individual characteristics. Utilizing a public benchmark dataset, we achieved a classification accuracy of 87.43% and an ITR of 256.1 bits/min at 1s time window, demonstrating the performance of this method. Compared to other classical spatial filtering methods, the proposed method demonstrates superior classification performance, which can enhance the practical usability of SSVEP-BCI systems. © VDE VERLAG GMBH.

Intravenous (IV) therapy is a critical component of modern healthcare, yet traditional IV systems are prone to human errors, manual adjustments, and limited monitoring capabilities, which can jeopardize patient safety and hinder healthcare efficiency. This paper presents the development of the Smartdrip IV Infusion System, a sophisticated and automated solution that integrates advanced sensors, control algorithms, and intuitive user interfaces to address these limitations. The Smartdrip system minimizes human intervention, provides real-time monitoring, and automates fluid administration with enhanced precision and safety features. The system demonstrates high reliability through simulation and prototype testing in detecting anomalies, issuing alerts, and ensuring accurate infusion rates, thereby improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare provider workload. The results validate the Smartdrip system as a transformative approach to optimizing IV therapy in diverse clinical settings. © 2024 IEEE.

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) steering reflective beam directions toward a target mobile user equipment (UE) has been a promising technology for coverage enhancement and physical-layer (PHY) security to avoid signal eavesdroppers and jammers. However, tracking and predicting the moving trajectory of UE demand significant computing burdens unaffordable to the RIS. Performing beam steering computations on the radio access network (RAN) intelligent controller in the open RAN (O-RAN) architecture therefore emerges as a revolutionary paradigm. In this paper, we propose a PHY-secured beam steering design based on a pre-processing-based Kalman filter algorithm. Through a pre-processing phase to derive the radiation feature, the proposed design accurately tracks the position of the mobile UE and quickly recovers the position search while position tracking fails. Through practical field-try experiments, we justify the capability of O-RAN RIC-empowered RIS for PHY security. © 2013 IEEE.

We study the problem of estimating the stationary mass--also called the unigram mass-- that is missing from a single trajectory of a discrete-time, ergodic Markov chain. This problem has several applications--for example, estimating the stationary missing mass is critical for accurately smoothing probability estimates in sequence models. While the classical Good-Turing estimator from the 1950s has appealing properties for i.i.d. data, it is known to be biased in the Markovian setting, and other heuristic estimators do not come equipped with guarantees. Operating in the general setting in which the size of the state space may be much larger than the length n of the trajectory, we develop a linear-runtime estimator called Windowed Good-Turing (WINGIT) and show that its risk decays as Õ(Tmix/n), where Tmix denotes the mixing time of the chain in total variation distance. Notably, this rate is independent of the size of the state space and minimax-optimal up to a logarithmic factor in n/Tmix. We also present an upper bound on the variance of the missing mass random variable, which may be of independent interest. We extend our estimator to approximate the stationary mass placed on elements occurring with small frequency in the trajectory. Finally, we demonstrate the efficacy of our estimators both in simulations on canonical chains and on sequences constructed from natural language text.

With the recent advancements in machine learning (ML) theory, a lot of energy-efficient neural network (NN) accelerators have been developed. However, their associated side-channel security vulnerabilities pose a major concern. There have been several proof-of-concept attacks demonstrating the extraction of their model parameters and input data. This work introduces a threshold implementation (TI) masking-based NN accelerator that secures model parameters and inputs against power and electromagnetic (EM) side-channel attacks. The 0.159 mm2 demonstration in 28 nm runs at 125 MHz at 0.95 V and limits the area and energy overhead to 64% and 5.5× , respectively, while demonstrating security even greater than 2M traces. The accelerator also secures model parameters through encryption and the inputs against horizontal power analysis (HPA) attacks. © 2022 IEEE.
