Security configuration files are created and edited as text files. These files are the essential definition and control of the behavior of security devices. Despite their significant size, complexity, and the possibility of interaction between entries, no visually sophisticated tools exist that explicitly capture and visualize problematic interactions between rules to aid in the comprehension and modification of configuration files. Our initial work on the direct visualization of firewall configurations showed the limitations of visualizing just the range of packets that can be accepted. To visually capture the interactions between rules, we introduce the concept of a "created void." Created voids capture the information about destructive interactions between rules in a firewall ruleset, where an overlap between a deny rule prevents that packet from reaching an accept rule later in the ruleset. We present a lossless five-dimensional visualization of the convex solid decomposition of the set of acceptable packets from a firewall configuration, augmented with visual representations of created voids. This interactive visualization is embedded in a simple firewall ruleset editor, allowing the user to investigate the effect of changes in the ruleset.

This paper proposes a system for content based video retrieval based on shape and motion features of the video object. We have used Curvature scale space for shape representation and Polynomial curve fitting for trajectory representation and retrieval. The shape representation is invariant to translation, rotation and scaling and robust with respect to noise. Trajectory matching incorporates visual distance, velocity dissimilarity and size dissimilarity for retrieval. The cost of matching two video objects is based on shape and motion features, to retrieve similar video shots. We have tested our system on standard synthetic databases. We have also tested our system on real world databases. Experimental results have shown good performance.

In remote sensing systems one of the most important features needed are roads, which require automated procedures to rapidly identify them from high-resolution satellite imagery, Many approaches for automatic road extraction have appeared in literature , which vary due to the differences in their goals, available information, algorithms used and assumptions about roads. In this paper, we propose an approach for automatic road extraction by integrating region and edge information. The complimentary information of road segments obtained using probabilistic SVM (PSVM) and road edges obtained using dominant singular measure (DSM) are integrated using a modified constraint satisfaction neural network - complementary information integration(CSNN-CII) to improve the accuracy of the system. Results are shown on real-world images and quantitatively evaluated with manual hand-drawn road layouts.

In this paper we focus on providing coordinated visual strategies to assist users in performing tasks driven by the presence of temporal and spatial attributes. We introduce temporal visualization techniques targeted at such tasks, and illustrate their use with an application involving a climate classification process. The climate classification requires extensive processing of a database containing daily rain precipitation values collected along over fifty years at several spatial locations in the Sao Paulo state, Brazil. We identify user exploration tasks typically conducted as part of the data preparation required in this process, and then describe how such tasks may be assisted by the multiple visual techniques provided. Issues related to the use of the multiple techniques by an end-user are also discussed.

Distribution of the visualization process over the World Wide Web allows remote access to expensive resources, and the cooperation amongst teams of experts that are located in different places. This paper presents an architecture and a corresponding prototype implementation of a distributed system for visualization and sonification of scientific data. The distribution is accomplished by the addition of visualization and sonification servers, accessible over the Internet, and implemented using an XML-based SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) protocol. The system is an evolution of a previously-developed prototype, with improvement in the visualization and in the distribution aspects of the architecture. The former distribution scheme employed CORBA (Common Object Request Broker). A discussion on the use of both distribution tools is given in the light of visualization tasks.
