Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an essential therapeutic resource for treating movement disorders like dystonia. In order to gain further insight into the underlying disease mechanisms, animal models are used. However, the most critical obstacle for further research is the lack of subcutaneous implantable, miniaturized neurostimulators that can deliver reliable and replicable results. Extracorporeal mounting of neurostimulators on the head or back places a high burden on the animal. Furthermore, the animals frequently tamper with these stimulation setups, leading to high failure rates. In the absence of suitable diagnostic tests, such defects generally escape detection. Therefore, this article presents strategies for a DBS stimulator design intending to increase the scientific merit of behavioral experiments in rodents. In this context, we demonstrate an easy-to-implement, waterproof, biocompatible, and compact encapsulation method suited for full implantation in small rodents. Using this method, we implanted DBS devices subcutaneously in dystonic hamsters that have been successfully tested for up to 17 days.

Conventional hyperspectral cameras cascade lenses and spectrometers to acquire the spectral datacube,which forms the fundamental framework for hyperspectral ***,this cascading framework involves tradeoffs among spectral and imaging performances when the system is driven toward ***,we propose a spectral singlet lens that unifies optical imaging and computational spectrometry functions,enabling the creation of minimalist,miniaturized and high-performance hyperspectral *** a paradigm,we capitalize on planar liquid crystal optics to implement the proposed framework,with each liquid-crystal unit cell acting as both phase modulator and electrically tunable spectral *** with various targets show that the resulting millimeter-scale hyperspectral camera exhibits both high spectral fidelity(>95%)and high spatial resolutions(~1.7 times the diffraction limit).The proposed“two-in-one”framework can resolve the conflicts between spectral and imaging resolutions,which paves a practical pathway for advancing hyperspectral imaging systems toward miniaturization and portable applications.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has great potential in control, communication, and neurological diagnostics by interpreting EEG signals. This paper introduces a novel method for extracting distinguishing features from EEG signals using a Common Spatial Patterns (CSP) model, enhanced with a Phase Space Reconstruction model and followed by an autoregressive (AR) model. Initially, EEG signals are denoised using an IIR Butterworth filter before feature extraction. Two classifiers, Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), are employed to differentiate features across four motor imagery (MI) tasks. For a four-class MI task, combining spatial and temporal-frequency domain features, LDA achieves an accuracy of 67.40%, while MLP reaches 64.78%. LDA yields precision and recall scores of 67.40% and 67.20%, respectively, for the F1-score, whereas MLP records precision, recall, and F1-scores of 65.36%, 64.78%, and 64.28%, respectively. The proposed architecture is evaluated using the BCI Competition IV set 2a dataset, proving its effectiveness in EEG signal classification for BCI applications. © 2024 IEEE.

Connected mobile and embedded devices including tablets, smartphones, and smartwatches but also IoT sensors and actuators as well as medical implants are subject to a rapid development in terms of their numbers and computing power. However, these devices have energy limitations, e.g., due to limited energy supplies. In order for networked devices to be able to manage their energy, they can offload tasks to other devices. However, they need to estimate the energy demand to execute the tasks in order to take offloading decisions. This paper proposes energy models for estimating the energy consumption for task processing derived from practical measurements for exemplary tasks. The task-processing energy consumption models are implemented in the OMNeT++ simulator to allow simulative, accurate task-offloading investigations. © 2020 IEEE.

More recent studies have concentrated on methods to improve the security and privacy of cloud operations for the benefit of user data. For example, in order to safeguard sensitive data kept by a cloud-deployed procedure, it is important to guarantee secure transmission of sensitive data across multiple stakeholders. Researchers have investigated deeply into the subject of cloud security concerns, which include data breaches, denial of service, data loss, service rejection, and threats from malicious users. These issues typically stem from problems like multi-tenancy, lack of control over data, and trust issues. Cloud providers are primarily responsible for ensuring the security of the cloud platform. This study proposes a CNN-BiLSTM-AM hybrid model that combines Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM), and Attention Mechanism (AM). In order to determine how well our proposed hybrid model worked, this study tested it extensively against the traditional CNN and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) techniques. An established standard for evaluating intrusion detection systems, the CICIDS 2017 dataset was used in the study. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed hybrid model outperformed the competition. The proposed hybrid model delivers the highest performance measure of accuracy (99.2%), detection rate (98.807%), and precision (99.59%). © 2024 IEEE.

Frame replication and elimination for reliability in time-sensitive networks

In modern applications such as in the prospective smart factory, timely and fault-free communication is one of the main concerns. Communication failures may lead to huge economic losses. Moreover, they can even endanger human life. Therefore, the Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) task group has introduced new standards for real-time capable Ethernet, which also include a fault tolerance mechanism called Frame Replication and Elimination for Reliability (FRER) as IEEE standard 802.1CB. This standard introduces procedures and protocols for bridges and end stations in time-sensitive networks. It also provides mechanisms for the identification and duplication of frames to enable redundant transmissions. In this paper, a simulation model is developed that implements the IEEE 802.1CB standard in OMNeT++. In addition, as supplement to the standard we propose a reliability mechanism for establishing redundant paths and an error model to model transient and permanent errors. Due to the increasing complexity of distributed embedded systems, the development process demands early substantiation of design decisions for the targeted system. Virtual prototypes enable an early validation of hardware/software systems and they have proven to be very beneficial for target software development. However, these prototypes often do not include models for inter-device communication aspects of distributed systems. Especially the use of wireless communication has a significant impact on the overall system behavior and performance. This paper introduces a SystemC model of an essential part of IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN communication, the Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) protocol. In comparison to widely used network simulations, the modeling with SystemC promises an easier integration into existing virtual prototypes. EDCA is the main part of the lower medium access layer (MAC) of IEEE 802.11 and interfaces to the physical-layer communication as well as to non-time-critical higher MAC-layer functions. We conducted experiments with an additional simple physical communication channel model to compare our solution in terms of precision and performance to the well-established network simulator ns-3. We show that our model differs by $\approx 0.3 \%$ of retransmitted frames and an accompanied difference of the overall simulated transmission time of $\approx 0.45 \%$. It meets the overall expectations for the stochastic EDCA protocol. Moreover, the presented model has a significantly better simulation performance with $3 \cdot 10^{-5}$ s wall-clock time per frame, which is at least two orders of magnitude better than with the compared ns-3 simulation.

Approximate or inexact arithmetic is a promising approach towards lower power consumption for applications that can tolerate a certain amount of imprecision. As human perception is limited in its precision, this applies to image and audio processing. Beyond, other applications like neuronal networks or AI processing can benefit from such arithmetic as well, as they are inherently tolerant to a certain amount of inaccuracy. One of the most critical components of arithmetic circuits regarding power, delay, and area are multipliers. Various sophisticated approaches towards approximate multipliers are already published for ASICs. However, such ASIC approaches are under-performing in conjunction with the specific Lookup-Table (LUT)-based design of FPGAs. As FPGAs gain in importance for applications like signal processing, there is a substantial lack of approximate design methodology for FPGAs. We propose an approach towards approximate signal processing that is specifically tailored towards the LUT-based hardware of FPGAs. It allows for significant performance improvements while lowering the energy demands. While introducing an insignificant average relative error of just 0.14%, we achieve a 45.9% area reduction in terms of LUTs while decreasing the delay by 30.6% compared to the Xilinx Vivado multiplier IP core. Smart cities have produced vast amounts of surveillance video data that can be processed to identify anomalies since the introduction of visual sensors. A novel Quantized Wavelet Auxiliary Encoder Self-Attention Dilated Convolutional Neural Network with Gold Rush Optimizer (QWAESDCNN-GRO) designed to enhance security and reduce crime potential. Through the integration of the Quantized Discrete Haar Wavelet Transform (QDHWT), frame-level features have been extracted. Subsequently, the recovered features are fed to the Auxiliary Guided Knowledge Encoder-Decoder (AGED), which uses them to rank the features. These features are then sent to the Self-Attention Causal Dilated Convolutional Neural Network (SACDCNN) with Gold Rush Optimization (GRO) for anomaly detection. Performance indicators including Fl-score, recall, accuracy, precision, and AUC are compared with those of earlier techniques in order to assess the effectiveness of the recommended strategy. Using the UCF-Crime dataset, the model achieved an accuracy of 99.87% and an error rate of 0.021%. On the Hockey Fights dataset, it obtained an accuracy of 99.88% and an error rate of 0.019%. © 2024 IEEE.

Manufacturer-independent medical device interoperability has been strongly demanded by the clinicians and healthcare delivery organizations (HDOs), however has not been achieved in practice for decades. The ISO/IEEE 11073 Service-oriented Device Connectivity (SDC) family of standards constitutes a paradigm shift. This work supplements SDC with Device Specializations (DevSpecs) or Modular Specifications (ModSpecs): particular interoperability standards for high frequency (HF) surgical equipment and external control devices, such as foot or finger switches. They provide models to describe these devices in a service-oriented medical device system and modes of interaction with other network participants. Additionally, we contribute to the ISO/IEEE 11073-10101 nomenclature standard to provide semantic descriptions of the exchanged information. This is a key enabler for safe and effective medical device interoperability to support the caregivers and improve patient safety as well as clinical outcome. © 2021 by Walter de Gruyter Berlin/Boston.
