Frame assisted membrane transfer process was developed to transfer large area crystalline semiconductor nanomembranes on flexible plastic substrates. InP nanomembranes as large as 2cm×2cm was transferred successfully. Large area flexible photodetectors, solar cells and LED arrays all have been demonstrated experimentally, based on transferred InP nanomembranes.

As the application of the Internet Protocol (IP) is not longer restricted to the internet and computer networks, future IP-based application scenarios require an enormous diversity of heterogeneous platforms and systems. Thereby emerging communication architectures, concepts, technologies and protocols must be capable of handling thousands of devices and communication endpoints on the one hand and be flexible and extensible enough on the other hand, to provide cross domain interoperability independent of platform specific constraints. The Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS) is such a cross domain technology. This paper provides an overview of DPWS and existing DPWS implementations and toolkits with special focus on the Web Service for Devices (WS4D) initiative. Therefore, features and capabilities of DPWS are described in detail by referring to the open source WS4D implementations. The target platforms are ranging from resource rich server platforms down to highly resource constrained embedded devices. © 2010 IEEE.

Due to increasing integration densities and the emergence of nanotechnology, especially reliability and power related design aspects become critical for chip design. Since the arising problems are enforced by high circuit temperatures, the need for a possibility to model thermal behavior of a system in an accurate and physically correct way becomes inevitable. Hence, in this paper VulcaNoCs, a SystemC-based simulation environment for systems based on NoCs, is introduced. VulcaNoCs is designed to enable simultaneous execution of both high-level system simulation and dynamic modeling of temperature distributions in NoC-based systems. To emulate a system's thermal properties equivalent RC-circuits are used, exploiting the dualism between heat flow and electrical phenomena. To verify the temperature model, VulcaNoCs is compared to a more commonly used SPICE-based approach, exhibiting significant increases in simulation performance of up to 98,5% for modeling a 2x2 NoC, for example. ©2010 IEEE.

For future application scenarios of resource constrained and low cost smart cooperating objects, miscellaneous technologies for wireless connectivity are existing or upcoming in the near future. But further cross domain middleware and dedicated communication protocols to provide syntactic and semantic interoperability and not only technical interoperability are still missing. Thus, this paper investigates on two major candidates for IP based low power communication, based on known and matured technologies and protocols. Therefore, analyses and pitfalls of RESTful architectures based on HTTP and the Devices Profile for Web Services are presented. Furthermore, the paper discusses differences of DPWS and RESTful design and furthermore proposes an approach for a generic mapping of emerging Bluetooth Low Energy technology with RESTful device architectures for seamless and transparent connectivity. © 2010 IEEE.

Internet service providers (ISPs) have to store session data of their customers for operation, management, and control tasks. Thereby, each access node (AN) of an ISP’s access network keeps track of session data (e.g., IP addresses, MAC addresses, and lease times of IP addresses) of all connected customers. Session data is highly volatile due to continuous changes. It has to be stored persistently as it is required for regular data forwarding and traffic filtering. In case of an AN’s restart or crash, it needs to be reloaded. Today, session data is stored in an AN’s flash memory, which is limited in its availability and rewritability and intended for other purposes. Therefore, this paper proposes to organize ANs into a distributed hash table (DHT)-based Peer-to-Peer network to share their available RAM resources. Thereby, the DHT network serves as semi-permanent distributed memory for a structured redundant and interleaved storage of session data. In doing so, availability of session data is actually increased despite using RAM for data storage. After a restart or crash, an AN reloads session data by selectively reading required data from the DHT network. © 2010 World Telecommunications Congress 2010, WTC 2010. All rights reserved.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been of high interest during the past couple of years. One of the most important aspects of WSN research is location estimation. As a good solution of fine grained localization Reichenbach et al. introduced the Distributed Least Squares (DLS) algorithm, which splits the costly localization process in a complex precalculation and a simple postcalculation which is performed on constrained sensor nodes to finalize the localization by adding local knowledge. This approach lacks for large WSNs, because cost of communication and computation theoretically increases with the network size. In practice the approach is even unusable for large WSNs. This restriction have been overcome by scalable DLS (sDLS), which enabled to use the idea of DLS in large WSNs for the first time. Although, sDLS outperforms DLS for large networks, cost of communication and computation is initially higher for small networks, caused by data updates. The approach, presented in this work, dramatically reduces cost of communication of sDLS. Additionally, a new approach of distance estimation is applied to original DLS. In contrast to earlier simulations, this leads to improved localization, which is used for fairer comparison.

Objectives of the dissertation are impacts of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) traffic on Internet core networks as well as novel approaches for using P2P technology in Internet access networks. Thereby, challenges of P2P computing concerning topology awareness, scalability, and fault-tolerance are analyzed. The thesis' first part focuses on improving insufficient scalability and fault-tolerance properties of present-day Internet services like the Domain Name System (DNS) by using available resources in access networks. The second part addresses P2P mechanisms for a highly scalable, resilient, and distributed storing and computing solution in the access network. Finally, a new algorithm for allowing topology awareness in P2P networks is proposed. For evaluation, a prototype for a P2P-based DNS has been developed and another prototype for a P2P-based store and compute platform is currently set up. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have attracted considerable research effort in the community during the past couple of years. One of the most challenging issues so far is the extension of network lifetime with regards to small battery capacity and self-sustained operation. Endeavors to save energy have been made on various frontiers, ranging from hardware improvements over medium access and routing protocols to network clustering and role changing strategies. Only weak attention has been paid to the detection of erroneous nodes which can be also used for lifetime extension of WSNs. In contrast to some authors, regarding detection of failures in communication as error detection, we focus on faulty sensor readings. In this work we present an efficient error detection algorithm which detects erroneous nodes within the network based on neighborhood relations. The results of our algorithm enables direct reactions of concerned nodes or network parts without expensive involvement of any kind of central computing instances.

The latter is performed on constrained sensor nodes, finalizing the localization by adding locale knowledge. This approach lacks for large WSNs, because cost of communication and computation theoretically increases with network size. In practice the approach is even unusable for large WSNs. An important assumption of DLS is that each blind node is able to communicate with each beacon node to receive the precalculation and to determine distances to beacon nodes. This restriction have been overcome by scalable DLS (sDLS), which enabled to use the idea of DLS in large WSN for the first time. Although, sDLS has lower cost of computation than DLS, for large networks, this cost, caused by matrix updates, is pretty high. In this work an adaptation of sDLS is presented, which dramatically reduces cost of computation by circumventing matrix updates as often as possible.

Several alternatives of mesh-type topologies have been published for the use in Networks-on-Chip. Due to their regularity, mesh-type topologies often serve as a foundation to investigate new ideas or to customize the topology to application-specific needs. This paper analyzes existing mesh-type topologies and compares their characteristics in terms of communication and implementation costs. Furthermore, this paper proposes BEAM (Border-Enhanced Mesh) - a mesh-type topology for Networks-on-Chip. BEAM uses concentration while necessitating only low-radix routers. Thereto, additional resources are connected to the outer boundaries of a conventional mesh. As a result, overall bandwidth is traded off against hardware overhead. In conclusion, simulation and synthesis results show that the conventional mesh stands out due to its communication performance, whereas clustered and concentrated topologies offer the least hardware overhead. BEAM ranges in between and is an option to balance hardware costs and communication performance.
