Several alternatives of mesh-type topologies have been published for the use in Networks-on-Chip. Due to their regularity, mesh-type topologies often serve as a foundation to investigate new ideas or to customize the topology to application-specific needs. This paper analyzes existing mesh-type topologies and compares their characteristics in terms of communication and implementation costs. Furthermore, this paper proposes BEAM (Border-Enhanced Mesh) - a mesh-type topology for Networks-on-Chip. BEAM uses concentration while necessitating only low-radix routers. Thereto, additional resources are connected to the outer boundaries of a conventional mesh. As a result, overall bandwidth is traded off against hardware overhead. In conclusion, simulation and synthesis results show that the conventional mesh stands out due to its communication performance, whereas clustered and concentrated topologies offer the least hardware overhead. BEAM ranges in between and is an option to balance hardware costs and communication performance.

This paper investigates the energy-saving organization of sensor nodes in large wireless sensor networks. Due to a random deployment used in many application scenarios, much more nodes need to be deployed to achieve a complete sensor coverage than theoretically needed in case of an ideal deployment. Consequently, most of the deployed nodes are redundant and can be switched-off for a long time to save energy. A well-known principle to detect the redundancy of nodes is to divide sensor network into regular cells. Assuming a well chosen cell size, depending on transmission range and sensing range, it is possible to switch-off all nodes but one per cell. The challenge of this idea is the required exact position estimation of each node to assign its correct cell. This demands for the presence of location aware anchor node and consumes a lot of calculation and transmissions and may be even unachievable. Centroid localization is an already used approach which localizes an unknown position as the centroid of neighboring beacon nodes. Depending on several parameters, an area will be divided into subareas where all unknowns are neighbors of the same beacon nodes and are therefore located at the same point. The resulting subareas differ in shape and size. In the current work, we combine the centroid localization technique and the cell division idea. With regular arranged beacons, we utilize the emerging cells for the detection of redundant nodes. Thereby, our beacon based clustering guarantees connectivity, coverage and energy-aware network activity.

Due to increasing integration densities and the emergence of nanotechnology, especially reliability and power related design aspects become critical for chip design. Since the arising problems are enforced by high circuit temperatures, the need for a possibility to model thermal behavior of a system in an accurate and physically correct way becomes inevitable. Hence, in this paper VulcaNoCs, a SystemC-based simulation environment for systems based on NoCs, is introduced. VulcaNoCs is designed to enable simultaneous execution of both high-level system simulation and dynamic modeling of temperature distributions in NoC-based systems. To emulate a system's thermal properties equivalent RC-circuits are used, exploiting the dualism between heat flow and electrical phenomena. To verify the temperature model, VulcaNoCs is compared to a more commonly used SPICE-based approach, exhibiting significant increases in simulation performance of up to 98,5% for modeling a 2×2 NoC, for example.

Service-oriented architectures and systems designs are powerful concerning reusability of functional blocks and hiding implementation details from functional interfaces. But to compose a complete application, often central entities and engines are required for processing a specific sequence of service. In component-based designs the component itself is capable of describing both not only their offered services and interfaces but also dependencies on other services and interfaces to fulfill a complete task or application logic. This paper investigates on how to transfer and enhance exiting component-based approaches, already known from business applications, into the domain of embedded web services environments. Special focus is on the Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS) technology which features service orientation also in device centric applications. This paper introduces a new approach to create applications, based on services provided by devices deployed with DPWS, in an abstract and dynamic way.

For future application scenarios of resource constrained and low cost smart cooperating objects, miscellaneous technologies for wireless connectivity are existing or upcoming in the near future. But further cross domain middleware and dedicated communication protocols to provide syntactic and semantic interoperability and not only technical interoperability are still missing. Thus, this paper investigates on two major candidates for IP based low power communication, based on known and matured technologies and protocols. Therefore, analyses and pitfalls of RESTful architectures based on HTTP and the Devices Profile for Web Services are presented. Furthermore, the paper discusses differences of DPWS and RESTful design and furthermore proposes an approach for a generic mapping of emerging Bluetooth Low Energy technology with RESTful device architectures for seamless and transparent connectivity.

As the application of the Internet Protocol (IP) is not longer restricted to the internet and computer networks, future IP-based application scenarios require an enormous diversity of heterogeneous platforms and systems. Thereby emerging communication architectures, concepts, technologies and protocols must be capable of handling thousands of devices and communication endpoints on the one hand and be flexible and extensible enough on the other hand, to provide cross domain interoperability independent of platform specific constraints. The Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS) is such a cross domain technology. This paper provides an overview of DPWS and existing DPWS implementations and toolkits with special focus on the Web Service for Devices (WS4D) initiative. Therefore, features and capabilities of DPWS are described in detail by referring to the open source WS4D implementations. The target platforms are ranging from resource rich server platforms down to highly resource constrained embedded devices.

The demographic change and the cost pressure in the healthcare sector drive the need for efficient and secure medical homecare solutions which apply for the people who are elderly or in anastasis. As the complexity of such systems is rising, there is a need of a common foundation of components which can be reused to lower the implementation effort of such systems. The European ITEA2 OSAmI research project targets such a common foundation of basic components for a basic, widely applicable service-oriented component platform. The German OSAmI-D subproject develops a construction kit based on the OSAmI component platform with a particular focus on services for medical and E-Health applications. The results of the ongoing project and especially the foundation of reusable components are demonstrated in the scenario of home-based ergometer training during the rehabilitation of patients with cardiologic illnesses. © 2010 IEEE.

Over the last years Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have been becoming increasingly applicable for real world scenarios and now production ready solutions are available. In the same period the upcoming combination of Service-oriented Architectures and Web Service technology demonstrated a way to realize open standardized, flexible, service component based, loosely coupled and interoperable cross domain Enterprise Software solutions. But those solutions have been too resource-intensive and complex to be applicable for limited devices like wireless sensor nodes or small-sized embedded systems. Thus, more and more research investigations have been launched to bring the aspect of cross domain interoperability to the field of embedded battery powered devices. Now it is time to show the potential of integrating Web Services enabled WSN solutions in Enterprise systems. The proposed laboratory assistance solution in this paper demonstrates the benefits of Web Service enabled WSNs for process monitoring and disaster management by extending an existing system in the Life Science Automation domain.

Internet service providers (ISPs) have to store session data of their customers for operation, management, and control tasks. Thereby, each access node (AN) of an ISP's access network keeps track of session data (e.g., IP addresses, MAC addresses, and lease times of IP addresses) of all connected customers. Session data is highly volatile due to continuous changes. It has to be stored persistently as it is required for regular data forwarding and traffic filtering. In case of an AN's restart or crash, it needs to be reloaded. Today, session data is stored in an AN's flash memory, which is limited in its availability and rewritability and intended for other purposes. Therefore, this paper proposes to organize ANs into a distributed hash table (DHT)-based Peer-to-Peer network to share their available RAM resources. Thereby, the DHT network serves as semi-permanent distributed memory for a structured redundant and interleaved storage of session data. In doing so, availability of session data is actually increased despite using RAM for data storage. After a restart or crash, an AN reloads session data by selectively reading required data from the DHT network.
