This paper investigates the energy problem in sensor networks. After random deployment, nodes have to observe a region and transmit their sensor data to a central station. By checking redundancies in coverage and transmission with our XGAF algorithm presented here it is possible to shutdown the majority of nodes into sleep mode. Computation reduction in sleeping nodes and reduced communication results in increased network lifetime. This paper presents a novel routing algorithm which takes into account information concerning coverage and energy and using the advantages of scale free networks. Additionally, the algorithm allows nodes to work self organized. Thence, communication with the central station is reduced.

In recent years a movement from distributed systems controlled by users to automatic, autonomous and self-configuring distributed systems is noticeable. Web services is one approach but lacking the secure integration of resource-constrained devices. This paper describes the devices profile for web services (DPWS), underlying protocols and a DPWS toolkit implementation based on C and gSOAP and discusses its current state. It has enormous relevance for embedded systems and industrial automation since DPWS targets resource-constraint devices explicitly, and has the potential to shift the industrial landscape which is characterized of heterogeneous devices.

During the last years, networks-on-chip (NoCs) have become a true alternative for the design of complex integrated systems-on-chip (SoC). Much effort has been spent for research on functionalities, mechanisms, and quality-of-service (QoS) features in NoCs. Hence, a broad and multi-faceted design space exists but leaves open, which mechanisms and design paradigms actually tip the scales for the chosen application domain. In this paper, we discuss the level of QoS needed in a specific NoC for a packet processing application. This is done in the light of preliminary investigations for the redesign of an existing packet processing system because that system's current architecture exhibits drawbacks regarding performance and further scalability. Therefore, we considered to take advantage of an NoC communication architecture. A simple NoC was developed, which knowingly omits sophisticated QoS mechanisms. Relying on the lessons, which have learned from the history and development of the Internet, we argue that a simple and plain NoC suffices for applications as the one discussed.

In many applications such as signal integrity checking of hardware prototypes or determining dynamic behavior of wideband amplifiers etc. analysis of periodic radio signals with high accuracy is desired. The straight forward approach is to sample the signal to be analyzed with twice its highest harmonic content. But as fundamental frequencies are often far into the MHz range its harmonics may well span into the upper MHz or even GHz range. This leaves two possibilities: first, obey the sampling theorem and sample at that rate. But ADCs able to sample in the GHz range are expensive, power hungry and offer 6 to 8 bits maximum. Sometimes, this is not an option at all. Second, try to live with under sampling accepting alias frequencies in baseband. As long as aliased harmonics do not overlap this presents an acceptable solution. If they overlap, however, nothing can be done once the signal is sampled. But there is one more option presented in this paper, namely the possibility of deliberate nonuniform sampling. If the sampling set is chosen in a convenient way, mostly offered by an additive random sampling (ARS) scheme, this opens up promising possibilities to extend the alias-free processing range into the far MHz or even GHz region.

One of the key issues in large wireless sensor networks is a precise position determination of every node with minimal hardware requirements and lowest energy consumption. Exact localization techniques, which are prone to input errors, are resource-intensive and not feasible on simple sensor nodes without adaptations. The key mechanism is to effectively split the complex computation and distribute the communication load across all nodes. Therefore, we present the "distributed least squares" (DLS)-algorithm. DLS is a resource-aware localization method that achieves 47% computation savings and 86% energy savings compared to the reference method, a "fully distributed multilateration" on every sensor node.

Dynamic circuit techniques offer potential advantages over static CMOS, especially if more complex logic is to be implemented. Therefore, they are extensively used in high performance designs to speed up critical subsystems. However, the speed benefit is traded off for increased power consumption, area overhead, design effort, and reduced noise margins. The continuing process of technology scaling raises further concerns of reliability and limits the wide use of dynamic logic. This paper presents evaluations in terms of area, power dissipation, and propagation delay for several dynamic logic styles as well as for static CMOS in a 90 nm technology. The intention is to assess if dynamic circuit techniques are still an option to boost performance against the background of the issues of nanotechnology. Moreover, issues of reliability and signal integrity, gained from practical experience for different testbenches, and possible solutions are discussed. Finally, an automated design flow for dynamic logic, derived from a standard CMOS flow, is presented

Localization in wireless sensor networks gets more and more important, because many applications need to locate the source of incoming measurements as precise as possible. Weighted centroid localization (WCL) provides a fast and easy algorithm to locate devices in wireless sensor networks. The algorithm is derived from a centroid determination which calculates the position of devices by averaging the coordinates of known reference points. To improve the calculated position in real implementations, WCL uses weights to attract the estimated position to close reference points provided that coarse distances are available. Due to the fact that Zigbee provides the link quality indication (LQI) as a quality indicator of a received packet, it can also be used to estimate a distance from a node to reference points.

A prototype of miniaturized, low power, bidirectional wireless communication system was designed for in vivo pressure monitoring. The capacitive pressure sensors have been developed particularly for the medical field, where packaging size and minimization of the power requirements of the sensors are the major drivers. The pressure sensors have been fabricated using a 2.4 mum thick strain compensated heavily boron doped SiGeB. In order to integrate the sensors with the wireless module, the sensor dice was wire bonded onto TO package using chip on board (COB) technology. The telemetric link and its capabilities to send information have been examined on a test bench. A full pressure range from 0 to 10 kPa was generated using either air or water pressure pumped through connected tubes to simulate the environment similar to the one inside the gastro intestinal (GI) tract.

Recent research on field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) has yielded devices capable to compete against both digital signal processors and general purpose processors. Due to their resources in terms of logical gates and processing speed, FPGAs have made their way into numerous new areas previously dominated by dedicated hardware architectures, i.e., ASICs, digital signal processors, and microcontrollers. This paper presents a case study in field of image processing in which the new FPGA generation allows for a system design that exhibits near-to-hardware performance at low system development costs. The system's high performance is due to application-specific hardware components that are attached to a soft-core processor;the design follows the hardware/software co-design guidelines. This standalone embedded system executes both general control tasks written in C/C++ and sophisticated image processing algorithms implemented in the hardware description language VHDL. © 2006 IEEE.
