Service-oriented architectures (SOA) specify standards that allow the connection and interaction of heterogeneous hardware and software components in networks of any kind. Similar aims have to be encountered by the emerging network-on-chip (NOC) approaches to design future integrated circuits. That is, diverse components called resources) offer a large number of services which have to be managed efficiently during the operation of such a hip. The arising problems, like for instance service discovery or availability, are addressed by SOAs. Hence, this taper discusses whether and to what extent service-oriented approaches can be adopted for the operation of large on-chip networks with heterogeneous resources and its services, Thereto, simulation results are presented to evaluate different architectural implementations

Managing reconfigurable hardware resources at runtime is expected to be a new task for future operating systems. But due to the mixture of parallel and sequential parts of dynamically reconfigurable applications, it is not entirely clear so far, how to use and to program such systems. A new interpretation of dynamically reconfigurable applications is presented. It is shown, that the parallel computing concept of distributed object systems may be adapted for dynamically reconfigurable architectures. This approach answers many open questions concerning communication, interruption, and relocation of reconfigurable modules. It is explored by means of an extended Linux operating system in conjunction with a SystemC model of a dynamically reconfigurable FPGA

In many application areas, robots most suitably employ classical PID controllers and the like. In the field of autonomous mobile robots, however, further adaptation features are required in order to adapt to dynamically changing environmental conditions. In recent contests, the particular research area of soccer-playing robots, called RoboCup, has observed the emergence of omnidirectional driven robots. Such drives consist of three independently controllable motors with which a robot can simultaneously perform both translational movements and rotations, which yield a significant advantage in soccer games. This paper describes how a Kohonen-feature-map-based neural network is able to learn the required capabilities and how to adapt to changing environmental conditions

In the RoboCup small-size league, the positions of the robots are commonly calculated via a camera mounted above the field and different kinds of artificial intelligence methods hosted on a PC outside the field. In this case, the robot's position must be predicted because of the various time delays until the position data arrived at the robot. This paper focuses on the use of local sensors attached to the robot, and a neural network to estimate the actual robot position. This paper shows how local sensors can compensate for the effect of latency times and how the actual robot position can be estimated. Slip and friction effects that cannot be measured with local sensors can be adjusted by a neutral network, for which the implementation is adapted to the low resources available on the robot.

After deployment of sensor nodes, the software of sensor nodes usually cannot be changed anymore. Thus, dynamical changing requests in networks and adaptations of the evaluation methods are not possible. We present a service architecture (RASA) for small, mobile, and resource-critical sensor networks. This architecture features software changes by injecting services at runtime. These services are executed on the sensor nodes. The design of RASA simplifies data aggregation and locally collaboration of sensor nodes. On this way, it is possible to extract implicit information of the network and to adapt the software to dynamically changing processes. Hence, RASA is able to react and to change the network behavior depending on the current conditions. The proposed service architecture is optimized to execute simple, but local services. RASA meets the strong requirements of sensor networks regarding small resources, e.g. low memory consumption, supporting mobility, and robustness. Additionally, it supports the reusability of existing services or parts of services.

Autonomous localization of nodes in wireless sensor networks is essential to minimize the complex self-organization task and to enhance network lifetime. Known techniques such as distance estimation based on received signal strength are often inaccurate and produce outliers. We propose a new method to measure a distance using the minimal transmission power between a transmitting node and a receiving node. The determined distance is very precise and has a low variance. It is therefore suitable for localization which is exemplary demonstrated for the approximate "weighted centroid localization" algorithm

In wireless sensor networks, the coarse grained localization is a method to compute the position of randomly distributed sensor nodes. Without optimizations, it provides low precision which heavily depends on the transmission range of base stations. In this paper, we propose novel optimizations of coarse grained localization with centroid determination (CGLCD) to determine the position of nodes more precisely. Our focus is to compute an optimal transmission range of all base stations and to reduce the total energy consumption. We present an analytic proof of a simple equation to determine the optimal transmission range in grid-aligned finite wireless sensor networks. Using this optimal transmission range, we reduced the positioning error about 80%. Thereby, nodes as well as base stations require lowest energy

Ethernet-based broadband access network nodes like an IP DSLAM are required to provide many new Ethernet/IP-based features for, e.g., end user device autoconfiguration by DHCP, authentication and authorization based on IEEE 802.1X, and multicast distribution. At control plane, a lot of information exchange is needed to configure, administer, and control these features and services. Cost-effective access network and system structures highly depend on an efficient and optimized feature positioning. ACIP is a new access control and information protocol which enables optimized, cost-effective functional decomposition of features without loosing feature options and supports optimized feature positioning. It provides transport of configuration and control information in Ethernet networks, e.g., for providing DSL line identification used for DHCP relay agent option 82 to centralized systems and for transmitting control information to remotely control DSL user ports by a centralized 802.1X authentication mechanism. ACIP is designed for being as simple as possible and open for new extensions to provide future network control functions

Today, an increasing number of customers subscribes for a high bandwidth Internet access. But not only communication speed is demanded. Quality-of-service moves more and more into the customers' focus. Both carriers and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have increasing requirements derived from new services they want to offer to their customers. We present a new hardware solution is presented, which can satisfy many of these upcoming demands. This solution is highly flexible and can be adapted to various applications. The MAC address translation - MPLS user network interface (MATMUNI) provides the functionality of MAC address translation (MAT), multi protocol label switching-user network interface (MPLS-UNI), and a traffic manager (TM). This way, a module implemented on a single FPGA offers a wide range of functionality in an access network for low costs and high flexibility. The selection of an FPGA as implementation target offers the possibility to adapt to future demands towards functionality. Moreover, the all functional elements work with wire speed. Only a negligible delay is inserted into the datapath

Positioning sensor nodes requires distance information to reference points. Due to resource limitations in sensor networks, distance determination in low-cost sensor nodes without additional hardware is difficult. Known techniques such as distance estimation based on received signal strength (RSSI) are mostly inaccurate or have limitations. We propose a new method to measure the distance between a transmitting node and a receiving node using the minimal transmission power. The determined distance is more precise than RSSI, has a low variance and is therefore particularly suitable for positioning. Finally, we implemented a demonstrator application using weighted centroid localization to show the practical implementation. Copyright 2006 ACM.
