Geological and environmental conditions that influence local topography also affect indirectly the location of human settlement dynamics. Understanding those relationships plays an important role in environmental and cultural heritage research related to the evolution of settlement dynamics. This work aims to present preliminary results of a study of the patterns of human settlements, based on known archaeological sites at four small islands of Dodecanese, Greece, and to generate hypotheses about the relations of cultural heritage patterns with the landscape. To that end, a Web-GIS database was created, which was fed with topographic, geomorphological data and Earth Observation data. Geomorphological analysis, derived from earth observation products, can provide useful estimations into the processes that shape landscapes and insight into the location and evolution of settlements. The analysis includes a series of different data correlation, from geomorphologic to socioeconomic, integrated by an indicator analysis. A series of thematic maps were developed to interpret why areas were selected to host settlements. Using the database, a set of indexes have been applied, that included exposure and vulnerability indices for the inland and coastal areas for specific sites. The areas under investigation present different characteristics in their geomorphological but also their societal evolution. Geomorphological data was further analysed in a ternary diagram that indicated the relative influence of each of the parameters in each area. From the diagram it is seen that the locations of human activities are strongly affected by environmental factors. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

The advent of single-cell or single-molecule sampling techniques allowed the study of abnormalities in small subsets of cell populations as well as subtle differences of evolving biological phenomena. A major challenge in this effort is the quantification of statistical differences between the probability distributions of measured quantities;particularly when small perturbations or small distributional changes need to be detected. Here, we propose to use as a discriminative tool the Rényi divergence whose key advantage is its ability to highlight differences between probability tails. In addition, we describe an algorithm which is based on a variational representation formula for the Rényi divergence and implicitly estimates it by solving an optimization problem. We evaluate the discrimination performance on both synthetic and real datasets. The proposed algorithm is able to detect distributional differences which are below 0.5% and quantify the trade-off between number of samples and neural network complexity. The comparison with existing density ratio approaches reveals that the proposed method is significantly better when the dimension of the data is moderately high (e.g., larger than 10). © 2021 UNCECOMP Proceedings. Frequency-comb emission via high-order harmonic generation(HHG)provides an alternative method for the coherent vacuum ultraviolet(VUV)and extreme ultraviolet(XUV)radiation at ultrahigh repetition *** particular,the temporal and spectral features of the HHG were shown to carry profound insight into frequency-comb emission *** we present an ab initio investigation of the temporal and spectral coherence of the frequency comb emitted in HHG of He atom driven by few-cycle pulse *** find that the emission of frequency combs features a destructive and constructive coherences caused by the phase interference of HHG,leading to suppression and enhancement of frequency-comb *** results reveal intriguing and substantially different nonlinear optical response behaviors for frequency-comb emission via *** dynamical origin of frequency-comb emission is clarified by analyzing the phase coherence in HHG processes in *** results provide fresh insight into the experimental realization of selective enhancement of frequency comb in the VUV–XUV regimes.

The low-energy mutual neutralization(MN)reactions Na^(+)+H^(-)→Na(nl)+H have been studied by employing the full quantum-mechanical molecular-orbital close-coupling(QMOCC)method over a wide energy range of 10^(-3)-10^(3) e V/*** and state-selective cross sections have been investigated and compared with the available theoretical and experimental data,and the state-selective rate coefficients for the temperature range of 100-10000 K have been *** the present work,all the necessary highly excited states are included,and the influences of rotational couplings and 10 active electrons are *** is found that in the energy below 10 e V/u,the Na(4s)state is the most dominant exit state with a contribution of approximately 78%to the branch fraction,which is in best agreement with the experimental *** energies above 10 e V/u,the MN total cross section is larger than those obtained in other theoretical calculations and shows a slow decreasing trend because the main exit states change,when the energy is above 100 e V/u,the dominant exit state becomes the Na(3p)state,while the Na(4s)state becomes the third most important exit *** datasets presented in this paper,including the potential energy curve,the radial and rotational couplings,the total and state-selective cross sections,are openly available at https://***/10.57760/sciencedb.j00113.00112.

The future sustainability of cities is linked directly with their adaptive capacity in response to both ongoing urbanization, weather extremes and climate change. Many possible actions are related to urban materials and their thermal and radiative properties. To explore alternatives using modelling and to monitor applications the thermal and radiative properties of materials are critical. However, there is a lack of hyperspectral data for a wide range of common materials. A Spectral Evolution RS-3500 spectroradiometer is used to measure 2151 spectral (1 nm) bands between 350 to 2500 nm in four representative neighborhoods of Berlin (Charlottenburg, Neukolln, Lichtenberg and Mitte) during August 2022. The data are processed to contribute 284 hyperspectral measurements of surfaces into the urbisphere hyperspectral library. © 2023 IEEE.

Studying the urban climate at local scale is becoming a necessity in the era of intensified urbanization and climate change. Urban Surface Models (USMs) show great potential in this direction, as they provide crucial information, such as energy fluxes and near-surface meteorological parameters; however, they are usually implemented offline and not in a real-time manner. In this paper, we build upon a well-known USM, the Surface Urban Energy and Water Balance Scheme (SUEWS) and present the development of a web-based application, as a real-time monitoring service for the city of Heraklion, Greece. Earth Observation products are used to provide the spatial inputs required by the model and a network of ground weather stations is used to provide the necessary forcing data. Using the above, the model provides high spatial and temporal resolution city-wide outputs of heat fluxes and near-surface meteorological conditions. The energy-related outputs can provide significant insight for urban climate applications with the real-time monitoring feature enabling fast and area-specific responses to extreme events like heatwaves. Finally, the application has been set up in a transferable manner, so that its implementation to other cities can be conducted by modifying the minimum amount of model inputs.

We study minimizers of the Allen-Cahn system. We consider the "-energy functional with Dirichlet values and we establish the Γ-limit. The minimizers of the limiting functional are closely related to minimizing partitions of the domain. Finally, utilizing that the triod and the straight line are the only minimal cones in the plane together with regularity results for minimal curves, we determine the precise structure of the minimizers of the limiting functional, and thus the limit of minimizers of the "-energy functional as " → 0. © 2023, CC BY.

The paper introduces a novel approach for detecting structural damage in full-scale structures using surrogate models generated from incomplete modal data and deep neural networks(DNNs).A significant challenge in this field is the limited availability of measurement data for full-scale structures,which is addressed in this paper by generating data sets using a reduced finite element(FE)model constructed by SAP2000 software and the MATLAB programming *** surrogate models are trained using response data obtained from the monitored structure through a limited number of measurement *** proposed approach involves training a single surrogate model that can quickly predict the location and severity of damage for all potential *** achieve the most generalized surrogate model,the study explores different types of layers and hyperparameters of the training algorithm and employs state-of-the-art techniques to avoid overfitting and to accelerate the training *** approach’s effectiveness,efficiency,and applicability are demonstrated by two numerical *** study also verifies the robustness of the proposed approach on data sets with sparse and noisy measured ***,the proposed approach is a promising alternative to traditional approaches that rely on FE model updating and optimization algorithms,which can be computationally *** approach also shows potential for broader applications in structural damage detection.

Urban planners seek for the exploitation of Earth Observation (EO) intelligence towards sustainability, particularly in relation to the challenges of climate change. The continuously increasing temperatures worldwide is among the main challenges the cities have to face, with their local climate variations imposing the need for improved mapping and monitoring tools. The Copernicus Programme is designed to provide open and free EO data products for environmental and security applications, including services targeting cities (i.e. the Urban Atlas) and others providing useful information for heat mapping and monitoring (i.e. land surface temperature, air temperature), although yet not in the appropriate scale for spatial and temporal urban application. Here, we present how combining information from the Copernicus Core Services, the Copernicus Satellites and third party sources is used to retrieve information on urban heat. Five service prototypes allow access to information on the dynamics of land surface temperature at local scale, the surface urban heat island, the assessment of urban heat emissions and heat storage monitoring and the thermal comfort. Example spatially disaggregated information at a local scale is presented and discussed, aiming at a proof-of-concept that urban planning and management strategies, enhancing the resilience of cities, can be supported by similar services.
