In traditional indirect-drive double-shell inertial confinement fusion, high-energy x-ray preheat has always been identified as a major source of degrading implosion performance. However, a significant increase of the neutron yield is observed in ignition-like double-shell implosion experiments performed at Shenguang laser facility by intentionally utilizing high-energy x-ray preheat, mostly from the M-band. Permission of more M-band x-ray absorption inside the inner shell can both significantly mitigate the mix between the fuel and shell with a more stable Awtood number at the fuel-shell interface during the shell deceleration and slightly improve the symmetry of the imploding shell with a high entropy state of the shell, and the contribution outweighs the potential detriment to destabilizing the inner shell from the M-band preheat, which is consistent with radiation-hydrodynamics simulations and theoretical analysis. This novel understanding of the favorable impact of high-energy x-ray preheat on double-shell implosion could facilitate to achieve volumetric ignition and burn with high-Z shells.

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearranged non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) shows marked tumor shrinkage by ALK-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). However, tumors almost inevitably relapse owing to the development of acquired resistance. Resistance mechanisms include secondary ALK mutations and the activation of bypass pathways, such as cMET, cKIT, or EGFR, though some remain unknown. In this study, we analyzed alectinib-resistant patient samples and identified a significant increase in AXL expression in the tumor, and a high level of GAS6, the ligand for AXL, in the pleural effusion. AXL-overexpressing H3122 ALK-rearranged NSCLC cells exhibited partial resistance to alectinib, which was enhanced by GAS6 supplementation but could be overcome by the ALK/AXL inhibitor gilteritinib. Moreover, GAS6-overexpressing NIH3T3 cells and AXL-expressing H3122 cells were subcutaneously injected into the left and right sides of nude mice simultaneously, followed by alectinib treatment. The supply of GAS6 from NIH3T3 may have accelerated tumor relapse under alectinib treatment. However, even without GAS6-overexpressing NIH3T3, AXL-overexpressing H3122 tumor relapsed within 1 month possibly due to increased host mouse Gas6 expression. Single-cell RNA sequencing revealed that specific cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and a subset of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are the primary sources of Gas6 in the tumor microenvironment (TME). During alectinib treatment, TAMs increased their infiltration into the TME, whereas CAFs altered their expression patterns, substantially upregulating Mmp11. These findings suggest that AXL expression in resistant cancer cells, combined with increased Gas6 production in the TME, contributes to enhanced ALK-TKI resistance. © 2025 The Author(s). The current analysis executes a numerical exploration of Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) free convective heat transmission in a square enclosure filled with copper–water nanofluid by considering the effect of heat absorption/generation. The left and right walls are kept as adiabatic, the top wall is presumed to be hot, and the bottom wall is adiabatic which has a cold slit in the center. Using a two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equation in Cartesian form, the present analysis is theoretically modeled. To solve the governing constitutive equations in non-dimensional form, the Marker and Cell (MAC) approach is used. The MAC method employs a staggered grid where velocity components are stored at the cell faces, and pressure is stored at the cell centers. This arrangement helps in accurately enforcing the incompressibility condition (i.e., the divergence-free condition of the velocity field). The impact of the Rayleigh number, Hartmann number, heat absorption/generation coefficient, and nanoparticle volume fraction are examined to explore the features of free convective heat transmission within the enclosure. Results of these parameters have been graphically visualized by means of streamlines, isotherms contours, as well as local and mean Nusselt numbers. According to findings, the performance of heat transmission within the cavity is substantially influenced by the variations in the magnetic field’s strength, the volume fraction of Cu-nanoparticles, and heat absorption/generation. The average rate of heat transmission within the enclosure can be magnified by replacing the internal heat absorption with internal heat generation. The suspension of $$5\%$$ Cu nanoparticles into water boosts the mean rate of heat transmission of water by $$19.314\%.$$

Gap opening remains elusive in copper chalcogenides (Cu2X, X = S, Se and Te), not least because Hubbard + U, hybrid functional and GW methods have also failed. In this work, we elucidate that their failure originates from a severe underestimation of the 4s-3d orbital splitting of the Cu atom, which leads to a band-order inversion in the presence of an anionic crystal field. As a result, the Fermi energy is pinned due to symmetry, yielding an invariant zero gap. Utilizing the hybrid pseudopotentials to correct the underestimation on the atomic side opens up gaps of experimental magnitude in Cu2X, suggesting their predominantly electronic nature. Our work not only clarifies the debate about the Cu2X gap, but also provides a way to identify which of the different methods really captures the physical essence and which is the result of error cancellation. © 2024, CC BY.

Despite being successfully synthesized [Zhang et al., Nat. Mater. 20, 1073 (2021)], the monolayer structure of stable hexagonal TiO2 is unknown, and it is not even clear whether it can exist in a freestanding form. Through first-principles calculations, we have identified two previously uncharted stable structures, namely, distorted 1×√3 1T-TiO2 and √3×√3 1T-TiO2, both of which are energetically more favourable than commonly adopted 1H and 1T phases. Here structural distortions are characterized by the out-of-plane shifts of Ti atoms due to the pseudo-Jahn-Teller interactions, which break one and all two inversion symmetries of 1T configuration. As a consequence, the 1×√3 1T remains centrosymmetric while the √3×√3 1T exhibits out-of-plane ferroelectricity. Electronic structure calculations show that both two are wide-bandgap semiconductors with bandgaps larger than their bulk counterparts. Our study not only deepens the understanding of structural instability in wide-gap semiconductors but also adds a new member to the rare family of two-dimensional out-of-plane ferroelectrics. © 2024, CC BY.

We derive sharp-interface models for one-dimensional brittle fracture via the inverse-deformation approach. Methods of Γ-convergence are employed to obtain the singular limits of previously proposed models. The latter feature a local, non-convex stored energy of inverse strain, augmented by small interfacial energy, formulated in terms of the inverse-strain gradient. They predict spontaneous fracture with exact crack-opening discontinuities, without the use of damage (phase) fields or pre-existing cracks;crack faces are endowed with a thin layer of surface energy. The models obtained herewith inherit the same properties, except that surface energy is now concentrated at the crack faces. Accordingly, we construct energy-minimizing configurations. In the context of Discontinuous Galerkin methods, we study approximations of nonlinear variational problems. We propose elementwise nonconforming finite element methods to discretize the continuous minimisation problem. Using Γ-convergence arguments we show that for convex energies the discrete minimisers converge to a minimiser of the continuous problem as the mesh parameter tends to zero, under the additional contribution of appropriately defined penalty terms at the level of the discrete energies. In addition, we provide error analysis in the case where the solution of the continuous minimization problem is smooth enough. Under appropriate assumptions we show local existence, uniqueness and corresponding optimal order error estimates for the discrete Euler-Lagrange equations of our scheme. This research aims to optimise the fluid flow and heat transfer features of a porous square cavity filled with (Formula presented.) (titanium oxide-water) nanoliquid under the influence of magnetic field and the heat source or sink. The non-dimensional version of partial differential equations is solved using the marker-and-cell technique (MAC) and the finite difference methodology. The left and right walls are adiabatic. The top wall is cooled, and the bottom wall is heated completely. Spherical (Formula presented.) and non-spherical shapes (hexahedron, tetrahedron, column and lamina) nanoparticles are utilised to examine the optimal heat transference and fluid circulations within the enclosure. The impacts are graphically visualised and discussed with the following parameters nanoparticles volume fraction (Formula presented.), heat source or sink (Q), Darcy number (Da), Rayleigh number (Ra), and Hartmann number (Ha). Of the four non-spherical configurations of nanoparticles, lamina nanoparticles provide the best thermal transference and fluid velocity inside the cavity. The average heat transfer rate improved by (Formula presented.) when (Formula presented.) nanoparticles were added to the base fluid. Spin-orbit (SO) splitting in open-shell diatomic molecules gives rise to unique doublet electronic states and a wide range of rotational spectra. In spite of high importance of SO effect its manifestation at interaction with ultrashort and intense ultraviolet (UV) laser pulses is weakly studied. Our simulations confirm clearly manifestations of nonlinear phenomena in SO-splitting fragment spectra as the UV pulse intensity increases. These nonlinear effects in kinetic energy release and photofragment angular distribution spectra clearly reflect the SO splitting of the Π state and the R−Ω coupling (R is the nuclear rotational angular momentum and Ω=Λ+Σ is the projection of total angular momentum on the molecule axis). We show that in case of nonresolved rotational excitation the R−Ω coupling on doublet-state transitions can be effectively approximated as the R−Λ coupling, as for a singlet state, yet including actual SO splitting on the potential energy curve of the doublet Π state. The present investigation not only reveals the nonlinear SO-splitting effects on photodissociation dynamics induced by intense UV pulses, but also provides practical approaches for efficient modeling of the photoinduced ultrafast nuclear dynamics incorporating the SO-splitting phenomena.
