The production yields of the orbitally excited charm-strange mesons Ds1(1+)(2536)+ and D∗s2(2+)(2573)+ were measured for the first time in proton–proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The D+s1 and D∗s2+ mesons were measured at midrapidity (|y| T +s ground-state yield were found to be compatible between minimum-bias and high-multiplicity collisions, as well as with previous measurements in e±p and e+e− collisions. The measured D+s1/D+s and D∗s2+/D+s yield ratios are described by statistical hadronization models and can be used to tune the parameters governing the production of excited charm-strange hadrons in Monte Carlo generators, such as PYTHIA 8. © 2024, CC BY.

The production of (multi-)strange hadrons is measured at midrapidity in proton–proton (pp) collisions at √s = 13 TeV as a function of the local charged-particle multiplicity in the pseudorapidity interval |η| 0S, Λ + Λ, and Ξ− + Ξ+ per charged-particle increase with the effective energy. In addition, this work exploits a multi-differential approach to decouple the roles of local multiplicity and effective energy in such an enhancement. The results presented in this article provide new insights into the interplay between global properties of the collision, such as the initial available energy in the event, and the locally produced final hadronic state, connected to the charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity. Notably, a strong increase of strange baryon production with effective energy is observed for fixed charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity. These results are discussed within the context of existing phenomenological models of hadronisation implemented in different tunes of the PYTHIA 8 event generator. © 2024, CC BY.

This Letter presents the first measurement of event-by-event fluctuations of the net number (difference between the particle and antiparticle multiplicities) of multistrange hadrons Ξ− and Ξ+ and its correlation with the net-kaon number using the data collected by the ALICE Collaboration in pp, p–Pb, and Pb–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair √sNN = 5.02 TeV. The statistical hadronization model with a correlation over three units of rapidity between hadrons having the same and opposite strangeness content successfully describes the results. On the other hand, string-fragmentation models that mainly correlate strange hadrons with opposite strange quark content over a small rapidity range fail to describe the data. © 2024, CC BY.

In this work, we perform first-principles calculations, coupled with synchrotron small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) to investigate electronic origins of the chemical short-range ordering (CSRO) and to reveal the relationship between CSROs and mechanical properties in a typical bcc (body-centered-cubic) TiZrHfNb high-entropy alloys (HEAs). It was found that existence of an appropriate degree of CSROs not only stabilizes the HEA lattice structure, but also enhances the hardness, elastic modulus, and ideal strength. Comprehensive electronic structure analyses uncover that the reduction of d electrons at the Fermi level due to the development of (Ti, Zr)-based CSROs stabilizes the bcc HEA, and the CSRO-induced strengthening is attributed to the local lattice distortion and the d-electron transfer from high-energy to low-energy states under applied strains. This finding not only gives insight into understanding the nature of CSRO strengthening in bcc HEAs, but also provides a paradigm for achieving desired mechanical properties via tailoring CSROs in HEAs.

This paper reports the first measurement of the transverse momentum (pT) spectra of primary charged pions, kaons, (anti)protons, and unidentified particles as a function of the charged-particle flattenicity in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV. Flattenicity is a novel event shape observable that is measured in the pseudorapidity intervals covered by the V0 detector, 2.8 T due to local multiplicity fluctuations in the V0 acceptance than multiplicity. The analysis is performed in minimum-bias (MB) as well as in high-multiplicity events up to pT = 20 GeV/c. We report on the measurement of inclusive, non-prompt, and prompt J/ψ-hadron correlations by the ALICE Collaboration at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The correlations are studied at midrapidity (|y| T T int = 34 nb−1 and Lint = 6.9 pb−1, respectively. In addition, two more data samples are employed, requiring, on top of the minimum bias condition, a threshold on the tower energy of E = 4 and 9 GeV in the ALICE electromagnetic calorimeters, which correspond to integrated luminosities of Lint = 0.9 pb−1 and Lint = 8.4 pb−1 , respectively. The results are presented as associated hadron yields per J/ψ trigger as a function of the azimuthal angle difference between the associated hadrons and J/ψ mesons. The integrated near-side and away-side correlated yields are also extracted as a function of the J/ψ transverse momentum. First measurements of hadron(h)–Λ azimuthal angular correlations in p–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC are presented. These correlations are used to separate the production of associated Λ baryons into three different kinematic regions, namely those produced in the direction of the trigger particle (near-side), those produced in the opposite direction (away-side), and those whose production is uncorrelated with the jet-axis (underlying event). The per-trigger associated Λ yields in these regions are extracted, along with the near- and away-side azimuthal peak widths, and the results are studied as a function of associated particle pT and event multiplicity. Comparisons with the DPMJET event generator and previous measurements of the φ(1020) meson are also made. The final results indicate that strangeness production in the highest multiplicity p–Pb collisions is enhanced relative to low multiplicity collisions in the jet-like regions, as well as the underlying event. The production of Λ relative to charged hadrons is also enhanced in the underlying event when compared to the jet-like regions. Additionally, the results hint that strange quark production in the away-side of the jet is modified by soft interactions with the underlying event. © 2024, CC BY.

The production cross section of inclusive isolated photons has been measured by the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC in pp collisions at centre-of-momentum energy of √s = 13 TeV collected during the LHC Run 2 data-taking period. The measurement is performed by combining the measurements of the electromagnetic calorimeter EMCal and the central tracking detectors ITS and TPC, covering a pseudorapidity range of |ηγ| γT γT and xTγ = 2pγT/√s ranges, the lowest xTγ of any isolated photon measurements to date, extending significantly those measured by the ATLAS and CMS experiments towards lower pγT at the same collision energy with a small overlap between the measurements. The measurement is compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and the results from the ATLAS and CMS experiments as well as with measurements at other collision energies. The nuclear modification factor RAA of charm jets, identified by the presence of a D0 meson among the jet constituents, has been measured for the first time in Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair √sNN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D0 mesons and their charge conjugates are reconstructed from the hadronic decay D0 → K−π+. Jets are reconstructed from D0-meson candidates and charged particles using the anti-kT algorithm with jet resolution parameter R = 0.3, in the jet transverse momentum (pT) range 5 chTjet ch jet| AA is observed in comparison to inclusive jets in central Pb–Pb collisions with a significance of about 2σ in 20 chTjet © 2024, CC BY.

The coherent J/ψ photoproduction cross section is measured for the first time at midrapidity in peripheral to semicentral Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV. The centrality differential cross section dσ/dy is reported for the centrality range 40–90%, together with the doubly-differential cross section d2σ/dydpT, extracted in two peripheral centrality classes. The J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron channel, in the rapidity interval |y| © 2024, CC BY.
