A new approach toward obtaining polymer nanofibers via electrospinning the blend of polybenzimidazole (PBI) and surface-active oligoperoxide for further creation of smart polymer composites with tailored surface functionality via polymerization initiated from the large-area PBI nanofiber sheets is presented. The peroxide fragments localized on the nanofiber surface due to poor immiscibility of the polymers in the blend provide "fiber-initiated" radical polymerization aiming variation of the functionality, height, and packing density of grafted polymer brushes according to the application requirements. PBI-based nanofiber 2D sheets of the variable packing density of grafted poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (poly(HEMA)) or poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (poly(DMAEMA)) brushes were synthesized. The structure, morphology, and special unique properties of new nanofiber-based composites studied using combined techniques demonstrate the ability of our advanced technology to produce smart functional materials for enhanced multi-purpose performance. The nanofiber sheets functionalized with grafted poly(HEMA) brushes were studied as biocompatible scaffolds for the immobilization and growth of mammalian cells and tissues. Poly(DMAEMA)-modified nanofiber composites possess enhanced dielectric permittivity providing their potential application in nanoelectronics. © 2023, King Abdulaziz City for Science and technology.

Enhancing carrier mobility plays a crucial role in significantly improving thermoelectric performance. However, due to the lack of a systematic strategy, achieving high mobility remains an elusive goal for most compounds. In this study, the hot-forging method is applied to polycrystalline MnSb₂Te₄, achieving a remarkable 300% improvement in carrier mobility. Through electron backscattering diffraction microstructural analysis, it is demonstrated how optimizing textures can accelerate carrier movement in MnSb₂Te₄ bulk materials. Moreover, theoretical calculations, combined with experimental positron annihilation spectroscopy, reveal that Te vacancies help counteract intrinsic cation defects, leading to a simultaneous increase in carrier mobility. As a result, the hot-forged MnSb₂Te₄ specimen, with a diameter of 15 mm, reaches a record-high maximum figure of merit (ZT) value of 1.3 at 773 K and an impressive average ZT of 0.7 between 323 and 773 K. The experimental output efficiency of 4.6%, observed at 773 K on the MnSb₂Te₄-based single-leg module, further confirms that the improved transport properties are due to the enhanced carrier mobility. This comprehensive study offers valuable insights into mobility enhancement in MnSb₂Te₄ and provides a promising direction for exploring similar improvements in other thermoelectric materials. © 2025 The Author(s). Gas-Kinetic Scheme for Partially Ionized Plasma in Hydrodynamic Regime

Most plasmas are only partially ionized. To better understand the dynamics of these plasmas, the behaviors of a mixture of neutral species and plasma in ideal magnetohydrodynamic states are investigated. The current approach is about the construction of coupled kinetic models for the neutral gas, electron, and proton, and the development of the corresponding gas-kinetic scheme (GKS) for the solution in the continuum flow regime. The scheme is validated in the 1D Riemann problem for an enlarged system with the interaction from the Euler waves of the neutral gas and magnetohydrodynamic ones of the plasma. Additionally, the Orszag-Tang vortex problem across different ionized states is tested to examine the influence of neutrals on the MHD wave evolution. These tests demonstrate that the proposed scheme can capture the fundamental features of ideal partially ionized plasma, and a transition in the wave structure from the ideal MHD solution of the fully ionized plasma to the Euler solution of the neutral gas is obtained. CURVES IN THE FOURIER ZEROS OF POLYTOPAL REGIONS AND THE POMPEIU PROBLEM

We prove that any finite union P of interior-disjoint polytopes in Rd has the Pompeiu property, a result first proved by Williams [Wil76]. This means that if a continuous function f on Rd integrates to 0 on any congruent copy of P then f is identically 0. By a fundamental result of Brown, Schreiber and Taylor [BST73] this is equivalent to showing that the Fourier–Laplace transform of the indicator function of P does not vanish identically on any 0-centered complex sphere in Cd. Our proof initially follows the recent one of Machado and Robins [MR23] who are using the Brion–Barvinok formula for the Fourier–Laplace transform of a polytope. But we simplify this method considerably by removing the use of properties of Bessel function zeros. Instead we use some elementary arguments on the growth of linear combinations of exponentials with rational functions as coefficients. Our approach allows us to prove the non-existence of complex spheres of any center in the zero-set of the Fourier–Laplace transform. The planar case is even simpler in that we do not even need the Brion–Barvinok formula. We then go further in the question of which sets can be contained in the null set of the Fourier–Laplace transform of a polytope by extending results of Engel [Eng23] who showed that rationally parametrized hypersurfaces, under some mild conditions, cannot be contained in this null-set. We show that a rationally parametrized curve which is not contained in an affine hyperplane in Cd cannot be contained in this null-set. EXPONENTIAL POLYNOMIALS AND IDENTIFICATION OF POLYGONAL REGIONS FROM FOURIER SAMPLES

Consider the set E(D, N) of all bivariate exponential polynomials n f(ξ, η) = X pj(ξ, η)e2πi(xjξ+yjη), j=1 where the polynomials pj ∈ C[ξ, η] have degree j, yj ∈ T = R/Z. We find a set A ⊆ Z2 that depends on N and D only and is of size O(D2N log N) such that the values of f on A determine f. Notice that the size of A is only larger by a logarithmic quantity than the number of parameters needed to write down f. We use this in order to prove some uniqueness results about polygonal regions given a small set of samples of the Fourier Transform of their indicator function. If the number of different slopes of the edges of the polygonal region is ≤ k then the region is determined from a predetermined set of Fourier samples that depends only on k and the maximum number of vertices N and is of size O(k2N log N). We present an exact solution for the linearized junction array modes of the superconducting qubit fluxonium in the absence of array disorder. This solution holds for arrays of any length and ground capacitance, and for both differential and grounded devices. Array mode energies are determined by roots of convex combinations of Chebyshev polynomials, and their spatial profiles are plane waves. We also provide a simple, approximate solution, which estimates array mode properties over a wide range of circuit parameters, and an accompanying Mathematica file that implements both the exact and approximate solutions. © 2024, CC BY.

This paper discusses use of multi-threshold decoders in the Multiple Input Multiple Output systems with fading radio channels. The main attention is paid to the problems of implementation of the multi-threshold decoders and performance, with a focus on preserving low complexity, which is critically important for achieving high speed of decoding. In modern communication systems, where data communication rates reach dozens and hundreds of Gbit/sec, decoding efficiency becomes a determinant in ensuring stable and reliable information transfer. The obtained results have shown that multi-threshold decoders due to its ability to almost optimally decode even very long codes with low computational complexity ensures high efficiency in channels with different types of fading, including multipath channels with intersymbol influence, when it is used jointly with the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. Under these conditions, many noise-resistant codes are unfit for service due to their small length, which highlights the multi-threshold decoders advantages. These results confirm the possibility of multi-threshold decoders application in modern high-speed systems of digital data communication with complex nature of errors. © 2024 IEEE.

Forest fires are one of the large-scale natural phenomena that humans are not yet able to control (Bowman et al., 2009). Satellite remote sensing is an important tool in all processes involved during natural disasters (Poursanidis et al., 2017), from identifying areas that are most likely to be affected by using mathematical geospatial models and analysis and creating maps, mapping of affected areas in urban and suburban environments (Poursanidis et al., 2015) and use of results in remediation and compensation activities as well as the use of data from satellite image analysis in planning and decision-making systems for targeted firefighting actions or information on evacuations and avoidance of loss of human life (Kochilakis et al., 2017).
