This article's main contributions are twofold: 1) to demonstrate how to apply the general European Union's High-Level Expert Group's (EU HLEG) guidelines for trustworthy AI in practice for the domain of healthcare and 2) to investigate the research question of what does 'trustworthy AI' mean at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, we present the results of a post-hoc self-assessment to evaluate the trustworthiness of an AI system for predicting a multiregional score conveying the degree of lung compromise in COVID-19 patients, developed and verified by an interdisciplinary team with members from academia, public hospitals, and industry in time of pandemic. The AI system aims to help radiologists to estimate and communicate the severity of damage in a patient's lung from Chest X-rays. It has been experimentally deployed in the radiology department of the ASST Spedali Civili clinic in Brescia, Italy, since December 2020 during pandemic time. The methodology we have applied for our post-hoc assessment, called Z-Inspection®, uses sociotechnical scenarios to identify ethical, technical, and domain-specific issues in the use of the AI system in the context of the pandemic. © 2020 IEEE.

Natural hazards are phenomena with a large spatial dimension and impact. Their mapping and monitoring can be recorded only by using satellite remote image platforms. The range of the natural hazards and the way the latter affect the natural and manmade environments make the selection of the appropriate data types and analyses a challenging mission. Therefore, it is important that we understand the effects of each phenomenon as well as the potential relations between them, both in the temporal and spatial dimension. Furthermore, we take into account the availability and cost of the data in order to proceed to the selection of the appropriate data type and analysis as well as the potential of ESA's Sentinel missions. All in all, this paper aims at examining the recent technological developments ever since the advent of Remote Sensing via a variety of platforms and the latter's application for a better planning and confrontation of the natural hazards. Those which are of global interest and which occur more frequently during the last decades as a result of climate change are wild fires, flash floods in the urban and rural environments, landslides, tsunamis and soil erosion. Last but not least, the occurrence of volcanic activity, especially those in close proximity to urban areas, and heatwaves in the urban environment, are also mentioned. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Background: Systems Medicine is a novel approach to medicine, that is, an interdisciplinary field that considers the human body as a system, composed of multiple parts and of complex relationships at multiple levels, and further integrated into an environment. Exploring Systems Medicine implies understanding and combining concepts coming from diametral different fields, including medicine, biology, statistics, modeling and simulation, and data science. Such heterogeneity leads to semantic issues, which may slow down implementation and fruitful interaction between these highly diverse fields. Methods: In this review, we collect and explain more than100 terms related to Systems Medicine. These include both modeling and data science terms and basic systems medicine terms, along with some synthetic definitions, examples of applications, and lists of relevant references. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission, scheduled for launch in the mid-2030s, is a gravitational wave space observatory designed to detect sources emitting in the millihertz band. LISA is an ESA flagship mission, currently entering the Phase B development phase. It is expected to help us improve our understanding of our Universe by measuring gravitational wave sources of different types, with some of the sources being at very high redshifts (z ∼ 20). On the 23rd of February 2022 we organized the 1st LISA in Greece Workshop. This workshop aimed to inform the Greek scientific and tech industry community about the possibilities of participating in LISA science and the LISA mission, with the support of the Hellenic Space Center (HSC). In this white paper, we summarize the outcome of the workshop, the most important aspect of it being the inclusion of 15 Greek researchers to the LISA Consortium, raising our total number to 22. At the same time, we present a road-map with the future steps and actions of the Greek Gravitational Wave community with respect to the LISA mission. © 2022, CC BY.

The blazar S5 0716+714 is an intermediate BL Lacertae object remarkable for its variability in many energy bands. It was discovered by MAGIC in the very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray range in 2008. Later in 2015 an impressive electric vector polarization angle (EVPA) swing was detected in connection with a multiwavelength flaring event including the VHE gamma-ray band. This generated interest in further studies of the jet of this source and its electromagnetic emission at all wavelengths. Since then, MAGIC has monitored the source in coordination with other observatories and here we present the long-term study using data from 2015 to 2022 in a MWL context. The data set also includes the extraordinary flaring activity of 2017, so far the historical maximum detected for this source in the optical and VHE gamma-ray band. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

The 2-step staggered (also called leap-frog) time discretisation of linear 2nd-order Hamiltonian systems (typically linear elastodynamics in a stress-velocity form) is extended for a 3-step staggered discretisation applicable for systems involving some internal variables subjected to a dissipative evolution. After spatial discretisation, a-priori estimates and convergence is proved under the usual CFL-condition. Applications to specific problems in continuum mechanics of solids at small stains are considered, in particular linearized plasticity, diffusion in poroelastic media, damage, or adhesive contact. Numerical implementation and some computational 2-dimensional simulation of waves emitted by a rupture (delamination) of an adhesive contact illustrate the abstract theory and efficiency of the explicit method. Sensitivity analysis for rare events based on Rényi divergence

Rare events play a key role in many applications and numerous algorithms have been proposed for estimating the probability of a rare event. However, relatively little is known on how to quantify the sensitivity of the probability with respect to model parameters. In this paper, instead of the direct statistical estimation of rare event sensitivities, we develop novel and general uncertainty quantification and sensitivity bounds which are not tied to specific rare event simulation methods and which apply to families of rare events. Our method is based on a recently derived variational representation for the family of Rényi divergences in terms of risk sensitive functionals associated with the rare events under consideration. Based on the derived bounds, we propose new sensitivity indices for rare events and relate them to the moment generating function of the score function. The bounds scale in such a way that we additionally develop sensitivity indices for large deviation rate functions. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.
