This work addresses open-loop control strategies for continuum robotic manipulators inspired by the octopus arm, which are based on solving numerically a detailed elasto-dynamic model. Octopus arms are muscular hydrostats, capable of performing a variety of dexterous movements, which can be of particular interest to the design of relevant robotic prototypes. Octopus arm muscles consist of fibers and surrounding tissues, and exhibit nearly incompressible hyperelastic behavior. In the present work, they are simulated by a three-dimensional non-linear finite element numerical procedure, using appropriate activation functions for the generation of primitive octopus arm behaviors involving large deformations, such as bending, reaching, fetching and grasping. Preliminary experimental evaluation is performed using an SMA-actuated robotic prototype.

We derive tight bounds for the maximum number of k-faces, 0 ≤ k ≤ d - 1, of the Minkowski sum, P1 ⊕ P2, of two d-dimensional convex polytopes P1 and P2, as a function of the number of vertices of the polytopes. For even dimensions d ≥ 2, the maximum values are attained when P1 and P2 are cyclic d-polytopes with disjoint vertex sets. For odd dimensions d ≥ 3, the maximum values are attained when P1 and P2 are ⌊d/2⌋-neighborly d-polytopes, whose vertex sets are chosen appropriately from two distinct d-dimensional moment-like curves. Semiconductor microcavities are used to support freely flowing polariton quantum liquids allowing the direct observation and optical manipulation of macroscopic quantum states. Incoherent optical excitation at a point produces radially expanding condensate clouds within the planar geometry. By using arbitrary configurations of multiple pump spots, we discover a geometrically controlled phase transition, switching from the coherent phase-locking of multiple condensates to the formation of a single trapped condensate. The condensation threshold becomes strongly dependent on the programmed superfluid geometry and sensitive to cooperative interactions between condensates. We directly image persistently circulating superfluid and show how flows of light-matter quasiparticles are dominated by the quantum pressure in such configurable laser-written potential landscapes.

We consider robotic analogues of the arms of the octopus, a cephalopod exhibiting a wide variety of dexterous movements and complex shapes, moving in an aquatic environment. Although an invertebrate, the octopus can vary the stiffness of its long arms and generate large forces, while also performing rapid motions within its aquatic environment. Previous studies of elongated robotic systems, moving in fluid environments, have mostly oversimplified the effects of flow and the generated hydrodynamic forces, in their dynamical models. The present paper uses computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis to perform high-fidelity numerical simulations of robotic prototypes emulating the morphology of octopus arms. The direction of the flow stream and the arm geometry (e.g., the presence of suckers), were among the parameters that were shown to affect significantly the flow field structure and the resulting hydrodynamic forces, which have a non-uniform distribution along the arm. The CFD results are supported by vortex visualization experiments in a water tank. The results of this investigation are being exploited for the design of soft-bodied robotic systems and the development of related motion control strategies.

Graphene based polymer nanocomposites are hybrid materials with a very broad range of technological applications. In this work, we study three hybrid polymer/graphene interfacial systems (polystyrene/graphene, poly(methyl methacrylate)/graphene and polyethylene/graphene) through detailed atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Density profiles, structural characteristics and mobility aspects are being examined at the molecular level for all model systems. In addition, we compare the properties of the hybrid systems to the properties of the corresponding bulk ones, as well as to theoretical predictions.

Long Term Monitoring of Air Pollution on Monuments and Cultural Heritage Sites in Cyprus Using Satellite Remote Sensing

Although cultural heritage sites are documented and preserved, to date there has been limited monitoring and documentation of how cultural heritage sites are affected by air pollution. This paper aims to introduce a new approach for monitoring air pollution for areas near cultural heritage sites by using satellite remotely sensed data. This approach provides a cost-effective tool for local authorities and government agencies to identify the most polluted cultural heritage sites and make decisions regarding the conservation of these sites. Archived data may be used in order to study long term the impact of air pollution to cultural heritage sites. The study area includes significant open air monuments of Cyprus located in the four main cities of the island. In this paper the Limassol Castle is used as a focused case study. Three years of MODIS satellite data was evaluated and analyzed in order to categorize high risk long-term areas. Ground measurements using sun-photometers, spectro-radiometers and particulate matter (PM10) laser photometer were also utilized in the study. The darkest pixel atmospheric correction in conjunction with the use of the radiative transfer equation was applied to retrieve the aerosol optical thickness (AOT) from Landsat TM/ETM+ satellite images in order also to cross-validate the AOT values found from MODIS and sun-photometers. The results of the study indicate that air pollution is high in all the major cities in Cyprus near cultural heritage sites. The results also found that the Limassol castle was most affected by air pollution, while the other cultural heritage sites exhibited similar results.

Neutron-star and black hole X-ray binaries (XRBs) exhibit radio jets, whose properties depend on the X-ray spectral state and history of the source. There is general agreement about the type of the accretion disk around the compact object in the various spectral states. What is missing is a physical explanation for the appearance, disappearance, and re-appearance of jets. We will demonstrate that by invoking a simple physical mechanism proposed more than ten years ago, the so-called Poynting-Robertson Cosmic Battery (PRCB), we can explain in a natural way the disk–jet connection in XRBs.

We demonstrate, for the first time, that photonic lattices support a new type of laser filaments, called lattice filaments (LF). The LF attributes (length, width, and intensity) can be tailored by both varying the photonic lattice properties and also dynamically through the interaction between filaments. This opens the way for extensive all-optical control of the nonlinear propagation of intense ultrafast wave packets. Our approach is generic and applicable to all transparent media, with potential strong impact on various photonic applications.
