This work presents a novel multi-layer modelling framework for the evolution of spectrum markets of multiple spectrum/network operators that provide wireless access to users. It integrates models of the channel, mobility, user preference, network operators (providers), infrastructure deployment, user distribution, and price-adaptation mechanisms. Providers aim to maximize their own profit, while clients decide based on criteria, such as the financial cost of the access, transmission rate, and required transmission power. This paper gives a brief description of the modelling framework and a novel price-adaptation algorithm for providers. It presents how this framework can be used to instantiate a cellular-based market in a small city. Finally, it analyzes the evolution of this market under different topologies and user profiles, summarizing the main performance results.

The octopus arm is a unique tool that combines strength and flexibility. It can shorten, elongate and bend at any point along its length. To model this behavior, a hyper-redundant manipulator composed of multiple segments is proposed. Each segment is a parallel robotic mechanism with redundant actuation. The kinematics and dynamics of this manipulator are analyzed and simulated utilizing a modular computational modeling method. Simulation results for some primitive movements are presented, and the effect of hydrodynamic forces is included.

We present inundation and peak acceleration results for Crete, Greece from a scenario simulation of an earthquake and tsunami similar to the 365 AD event, a disaster that impacted the entire Eastern Mediterranean basin, was widely chronicled and has recently been geologically described fairly comprehensively. The impact of the scenario would be substantial, geographically diverse and spread over 300km along both northern and southern coastlines of Crete, an island with high mountain ranges and roads, which may be impassable in the aftermath of a similar event. The emergency response needs will likely overwhelm the capacity of Greece, and it is possible that help from neighboring non-EU countries will be needed, in addition to the emergency support mechanism hopefully to be activated following by the EU for any disaster of this scale in EU countries. The scenario's objectives are similar to the Great Southern California ShakeOut of 2009 organized by the USGS, i.e., raising public awareness and observing societal responses, in efforts to obtain, whenever possible, quantitative measures of factors that will help better define long term resilience. Similar scenarios and exercises over several decades will help measure any changes that might be adopted as a result of this exercise, always with the objective to reduce vulnerability and improve resilience. © 2011 ASCE.

This paper deals with the problem of underwater signal characterization and subsequent estimation of the parameters of the water column and/or the sea bed, using measurements of the acoustic field due to a known source at a certain point in the water column. Following the works by Taroudakis et al. (JASA 119, 1396-1405 (2006)) the acoustic signal is characterized using the statistics of the wavelet sub-band coefficients, which obey a certain statistical law, described by an Alpha-Stable distribution. The inversion procedure is based on an optimization scheme, which may be associated with any suitable directive search within a prescribed search space. In our work a Genetic Algorithm has been used in connection with a Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD) of the wavelet sub-band coefficient distributions which measures in an appropriate way the difference, between the measured and simulated acoustic signals involved in the optimization process. When the measurements are performed in a noisy environment, the performance of the signal characterization and subsequently of the inversion deteriorates substantially. This paper presents a short study on the effects of noise in the signal characterization. The study is based on characteristic test cases simulating realistic experiments and the results obtained are analyzed and commented.

This paper presents a methodological framework for urban modeling which accesses the multi-level urban growth dynamics and expresses them in linguistic terms. In this approach a set of parallel fuzzy systems is used, each one of which focuses on different aspects of the urban growth dynamics, different drivers or restriction of development and concludes over the suitability for urbanization for each area. As a result the systems' structure and connection merge the input variables into a single variable providing an information flow familiar to the human conceptualization of the phenomenon. At the same time, the structure does not pose severe data requirements while the utilization of parallel connection between fuzzy systems allows the user to add or remove variables without altering the ways in which other variables affect the knowledge base. Following, a fuzzy system that incorporates cellular automata techniques simulates the horizontal and vertical urban growth. The proposed model is applied and tested in the Mesogeia area in the Attica basin (Athens) and fits reality in average by 76% (LeeShalle index) while the average cell error is 19%. Nevertheless, the benefits obtained in the herein presented approach lie in the information management and representation. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Urban metabolism considers a city as a system and distinguishes between energy and material flows. Bottom-up approaches are based on quantitative estimates of urban metabolism components at local scale, considering the urban metabolism as the 3D exchange and transformation of energy and matter between a city and its environment. Decision Support Systems (DSS) are capable of supporting complex decision making and of solving semi-structured or unstructured problems through a computer interface that presents results in a readily understandable form. The main goal of the FP7 project BRIDGE is to develop a DSS and use it to propose modifications on the metabolism of urban systems towards sustainability by evaluating how planning alternatives can modify the physical flows of the above urban metabolism components. The BRIDGE DSS integrates bio-physical observations and modelling with socioeconomic issues in five European cities that were selected as case studies for pilot application. This study describes the design and implementation of the BRIDGE DSS.

We show numerically that by using periodic lattices the filamentation of intense femtosecond laser pulses, otherwise a result of competing nonlinear effects, can be well controlled with respect to its properties. The diffraction induced by the lattice provides a regularizing mechanism to the nonlinear self-action effects involved in filamentation. We demonstrate a new propagation regime of intense lattice solitons bridging the field of spatial solitons with that of femtosecond laser filamentation. The effective filamentation control is expected to have an important impact on numerous applications.

Atmospheric observation data are unavoidable mixed with noise and the performance of the data processing system will degrade remarkably. Wavelet threshold de-noising techniques is an important method to reduce noise in signal process. In this paper a new wavelet threshold function is proposed for removing noise in signal, which is based on the conventional soft and hard threshold functions. Both quantities of signal to noise radio (SNR) and mean square error (MSE) are introduced to judge the de-noising effectiveness. Some precipitable water (PW) time series data are processed by combined use of the new threshold function with Kolmogorov entropy and neural network prediction which are used to judge the de-noising effectiveness. The study results show that the new threshold function proposed can overcome the shortcoming of the conventional soft and hard threshold functions to a certain degree and is efficient for signal de-noising. ©2009 IEEE.

Gait Evaluation Differential Entropy Measure (GEDEM) [1] is a new quantitative approach to evaluating the condition of a subject by monitoring the acceleration [2][3]. The approach is capable to identify medical conditions [2, 3] and is also not dependent on age, weight, height or BMI. The initial studies [4][5][6] required the walking on the ground along a straight line for 20-30 seconds. Due to the promising results of the method, work is currently carried out on a treadmill. The treadmill alleviates the constraint of long corridors, and additionally offers better control on the gait velocity, minimum deviation in the coronal plane, and less variability in the GEDEM values [7, 8]. This work investigates the relationship between the gait velocity and the GEDEM. The gait velocity is a measurement parameter that influences the gait acceleration spectrum and therefore it is expected to influence GEDEM values.
