Atmospheric observation data are unavoidable mixed with noise and the performance of the data processing system will degrade remarkably. Wavelet threshold de-noising techniques is an important method to reduce noise in signal process. In this paper a new wavelet threshold function is proposed for removing noise in signal, which is based on the conventional soft and hard threshold functions. Both quantities of signal to noise radio (SNR) and mean square error (MSE) are introduced to judge the de-noising effectiveness. Some precipitable water (PW) time series data are processed by combined use of the new threshold function with Kolmogorov entropy and neural network prediction which are used to judge the de-noising effectiveness. The study results show that the new threshold function proposed can overcome the shortcoming of the conventional soft and hard threshold functions to a certain degree and is efficient for signal de-noising.

This paper presents rapid prototyping and reverse engineering techniques applied to create an implant for the surgical reconstruction of a large cranial defect. A series of computed tomography (CT) images was obtained and purpose built software was used to extract the cranial geometry in a point cloud. The point cloud produced was used for: (a) the creation of a stereolithographic (STL) physical model for direct assessment of the cranial defect;and (b) the creation of a 3D mould model for the fabrication of the patient-specific implant. © 2008 Informa UK Ltd.

Focal adhesions (FA) play a dominant role in determining adherent cell morphology. This is particularly true for FA close to the cell contour on a two-dimensional substrate, since they are required for stabilization of the elastic cell membrane protrusions. The identification of these FA yields valuable information about the shape and the general state of the cell. In the current paper, we present a new method that does not require FA staining - the method predicts FA locations based on cell contour morphology. Our method, which we term comparative Hough transform (CHT), derives from the linear Hough transform and offers a novel approach in identifying significant loci on the contour, where the lateral cell contour edges meet at a cusp.

Adjoint modeling for Acoustic Inversion based on an Adjoint Parabolic Equation

In this paper the acoustic propagation problem is modeled by the wide angle parabolic equation and the bottom boundary condition is in the form of a Neumann to Dirichlet map. We formulate the inversion as an optimal control problem, the control parameters being the sound speed in the water and the sound speed, density and attenuation in the bottom. Using the adjoint operator to the wide angle parabolic equation, an inversion scheme is derived for the acoustic parameters of the water column and the bottom region. The optimization approach used is the method of steepest decent. Several test cases are exhibited.

In this paper an analytic method is exhibited for recovering the acoustic parameters of the sub‐bottom region in the ocean. The acoustic propagation problem is modeled via the wide angle parabolic equation and the bottom boundary condition used is in the form of a Neumann to Dirichlet or Dirichlet to Neumann map. The sub‐bottom region is assumed homogeneous or horizontally stratified with homogeneous layers. The inversion is modeled as an optimal control problem, and the solution is based on the adjoint method. Several cost functions are introduced which make use of the relative amplitude of the observed complex field. The method is applied to several test cases and satisfactory convergence of the inversion scheme is exhibited.

This paper presents ongoing research in the field of extensional mappings between ontologies. Hitherto, the task of generating mappings between ontologies has focused on the intensional level of ontologies. The term intensional level herein, refers to the set of concepts that are included in an ontology. However, an ontology that has been created for a specific task or application needs to be populated with instances. These comprise the extensional level of an ontology. This particular level is generally neglected during the ontologies' integration procedure. Thus, although methodologies of geographic ontologies integration, ranging from alignment to true integration, have, in the course of years, presented a solid ground for information exchange, little has been done in exploring the relationships between the data. In this context, this research strives to set a framework for extensional mappings between ontologies using Information Flow Theory by presenting a case study of interoperability between the thematic content of maps. © 2007 The Authors. This article aims to test a satellite infrared (IR) technique for estimating rainfall over Mediterranean. On that purpose, we use 6hr, 12hr and 24hr cumulative rainfall measurements, obtained from a large set of gages located at the eastern Mediterranean region, during October 2004. Two kinds of comparisons are undertaken. First, rainfall estimates derived from satellite images are projected to the locations of the rain gages and then compared to the actual gage measurements. Results in this case coincide with those reported in Barret (1988): IR satellite observations tend to overestimate precipitation. To obviate this, we seek optimal transformations for the IR satellite data via using statistical tools, namely the Box-Cox method and Linear Mixed models. Next, we perform spatial interpolation to the rain gage measurements and compare the derived surfaces to the ones obtained from satellite images for regions having high spatial density in gages. In both cases the estimation error is positively correlated to the rainfall level;we quantify this dependence using appropriate statistical tools.
