Simulated moving bed (SMB) is a cost-efficient chromatographic technique employed for difficult separation tasks. SMB processes exhibit complex dynamics, e.g., its hybrid nature due to the inlet/outlet port switches with nonlinearities and delays. The novel feature presented in this work is the extension of the ‘cycle to cycle’ control concept to make use as manipulated variables, of the four sectional flow rates and the switch time. Its effectiveness is demonstrated through two case studies; the startup of a SMB unit under plant-model mismatch and the rejection of a pump disturbance.

To complement the largely manual design of logic control programs in industrial practice, this contribution proposes a method for systematically (and partly algorithmically) deriving logic controllers for given specifications. The main idea is to structure the information available for the design in form of specific intermediate formats which are iteratively refined and straightforwardly lead to controllers formulated as Sequential Function Charts. To analyze whether the design complies with all given specifications, model-based verification is applied subsequently, i.e. the controller is converted into timed automata, the latter are composed with a plant model, and model-checking algorithmically verifies (or falsifies) logic properties for the composed system. The procedure is described here for the example of a multi-product batch plant.

Surface electromyography (SEMG) is a bio-electrical manifestation related to neuromuscular activation. Electromyography pattern recognition plays an important role in SEMG application. A new SEMG pattern recognition method based on AR parameter model and clustering analysis is proposed. Four channel SEMG signals from corresponding muscles (palmaris longus, brachioradialis, flexor carpi ulnaris, biceps brachii) are picked up and analyzed with AR model parameter. Using AR model parameters as signal characteristics, an eigenvector is composed and inputted to the Mahalanobis distance classifier to identify different movement patterns. Eight movement patterns (hand grasps, hand extension, wrist circumrotates entad, wrist circumrotates forth, wrist bends, wrist spreads, forearm circumrotates entad, forearm circumrotates forth) are successfully identified. Experiments show that the proposed method performs very well and the recognition result is robust. It is believed that this method can be straightforwardly expanded to other nonstationary bioelectric signals pattern recognition study.

An algebraic formulation is proposed for the static output feedback (SOF) problem: the Hermite stability criterion is applied on the closed-loop characteristic polynomial, resulting in a non-convex bilinear matrix inequality (BMI) optimization problem for SIMO or MISO systems. As a result, the BMI problem is formulated directly in the controller parameters, without additional Lyapunov variables. The publicly available solver PENBMI 2.0 interfaced with YALMIP 3.0 is then applied to solve benchmark examples. Implementation and numerical aspects are widely discussed.

process model based methods to detect faults in a hydraulic linear servo axis by measurement of up to five variables are presented. The faults that are detected include gas enclosures in the hydraulic fluid, such as air, vapour and foam. The control edges and the valve spool are also monitored in order to detect faults such as erosion of the control edges and grooving of the valve spool. Furthermore, the leakage flow between the cylinder chambers and to the surroundings are monitored, which allows to detect damages of the sealing between the cylinder chambers and between the cylinder and the pushrod. The external mechanical load and the valve spool dynamics are also included in the fault detection and diagnosis approach.
