Breast cancer is the most often detected cancer in women. At the same time, it is one of the most curable types of cancer if diagnosed early. With the development of the detection technology, a growing amount of clinical data and highdimensional features can be used for breast cancer diagnosis. The high-dimensional data contributes to advances in the diagnostic technology, but also incurs a large amount of computational redundancy. Thus, extracting important information and reducing the feature dimension is critical to effective prediction and an accurate treatment ***, the previous works for breast cancer diagnosis are mainly based on labeled data that is difficult to obtain. To address this issue, in this paper, we demonstrate a new scheme, which integrates a deep learning based unsupervised feature extraction algorithm, the stacked auto-encoders, with a support vector machine model（SAE-SVM）, for breast cancer diagnosis. The stacked auto-encoders with the greedy layerwise pre-training and an improved momentum update algorithm is applied to capture essential information and extract necessary features of the original data. Then, a support vector machine model is employed to classify the samples with new features into malignant or benign tumors. The proposed method was tested on the Wisconsin Diagnostic Breast Cancer data set. The performance is evaluated using various measures and compared with the previously published results. The comparison results show that the proposed SAE-SVM method improves the accuracy to 98.25% and outperforms the other methods. The deep learning based unsupervised feature extraction significantly improves the performance of classification and provides a promising approach to breast cancer diagnosis.

Departure Counting Process in a Finite-Buffer Queue with Batch Arrivals and Multiple Vacation Policy

The study investigates the departure counting process in a finite-buffer queueing system with batch arrivals and multiple vacation policy. A representation for the mixed double transform of the number of departures up to the fixed time moment is obtained in the explicit form applying analytic approach based on integral equations and linear algebra. Numerical study is attached that focuses on understanding the impact of various system parameters on the behaviour of the mean number of packets processed within a fixed time frame. Utilizing numerical experiments, the study examines the influence of vacation duration, initial buffer state, arrival intensity, and processing rate on the departure process. Results reveal significant dependencies between these parameters and the transient behaviour of the queueing system. Notably, the service speed parameter demonstrates the most substantial influence on the mean number of processed packets, followed by the arrival rate. Conversely, variations in vacation duration and initial packet count exhibit comparatively minor effects on system behaviour. Overall, the findings provide valuable insights into the dynamics of departure processes in finite-buffer queue systems with batch arrivals and multiple vacation policies, offering implications for system optimization and performance enhancement strategies. © 2024, The Authors. A Learning Convolutional Neural Network Approach for Network Robustness Prediction

Network robustness is critical for various societal and industrial networks again malicious attacks. In particular, connectivity robustness and controllability robustness reflect how well a networked system can maintain its connectedness and controllability against destructive attacks, which can be quantified by a sequence of values that record the remaining connectivity and controllability of the network after a sequence of node- or edge-removal attacks. Traditionally, robustness is determined by attack simulations, which are computationally very time-consuming or even practically infeasible. In this paper, an improved method for network robustness prediction is developed based on learning feature representation using convolutional neural network (LFR-CNN). In this scheme, higher-dimensional network data are compressed to lower-dimensional representations, and then passed to a CNN to perform robustness prediction. Extensive experimental studies on both synthetic and real-world networks, both directed and undirected, demonstrate that 1) the proposed LFR-CNN performs better than other two state-of-the-art prediction methods, with significantly lower prediction errors;2) LFR-CNN is insensitive to the variation of the network size, which significantly extends its applicability;3) although LFR-CNN needs more time to perform feature learning, it can achieve accurate prediction faster than attack simulations;4) LFR-CNN not only can accurately predict network robustness, but also provides a good indicator for connectivity robustness, better than the classical spectral measures. © 2022, CC BY.

Sliding sequential CVAE with time variant socially-aware rethinking for trajectory prediction

Pedestrian trajectory prediction is a key technology in many applications such as video surveillance, social robot navigation, and autonomous driving, and significant progress has been made in this research topic. However, there remain two limitations of previous studies. First, with the continuation of time, the prediction error at each time step increases significantly, causing the final displacement error to be impossible to ignore. Second, the prediction results of multiple pedestrians might be impractical in the prediction horizon, i.e., the predicted trajectories might collide with each other. To overcome these limitations, this work proposes a novel trajectory prediction method called CSR, which consists of a cascaded conditional variational autoencoder (CVAE) module and a socially-aware regression module. The cascaded CVAE module first estimates the future trajectories in a sequential pattern. Specifically, each CVAE concatenates the past trajectories and the predicted points so far as the input and predicts the location at the following time step. Then, the socially-aware regression module generates offsets from the estimated future trajectories to produce the socially compliant final predictions, which are more reasonable and accurate results than the estimated trajectories. Moreover, considering the large model parameters of the cascaded CVAE module, a slide CVAE module is further exploited to improve the model efficiency using one shared CVAE, in a slidable manner. Experiments results demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits improvements over state-of-the-art method on the Stanford Drone Dataset (SDD) and ETH/UCY of approximately 38.0% and 22.2%, respectively. © 2021, CC BY.

Bioimpedance is a commonly used method for various conditions monitoring. In this paper, the authors carried out some research where they implemented various smoothing filters to enable identification of the bioimpedance spectroscopy parameters. The proposed filtering methods may also be used for application on embedded systems, which have smaller computing power but have become recently very popular. The obtained results with the implementation of smoothing filters were promising, however, some of the obtained results were unsatisfactory. This work also contains a brief introduction to bioimpedance spectroscopy and smoothing filters.

Self-attention networks have achieved great success in traditional language processing, and have also made great progress in image classification and object detection. When analyzing the previous work, it is found that some point cloud information is lost in their feature extraction work, so we design a network to reduce the loss when extracting features. And through the feature extraction network - Gated Attention Unit instead of Transformer, to make the extraction of point cloud features more efficient. Based on Point Transformer, a new network structure named Point Gated Attention is used to classify point clouds. The overall_acc on the dataset ModelNet40 can reach 91.4%, and the average accuracy can reach 93.9%.

This article presents a leak localization methodology based on state estimation and learning. The first is handled by an interpolation scheme, whereas dictionary learning is considered for the second stage. The novel proposed interpolation technique exploits the physics of the interconnections between hydraulic heads of neighboring nodes in water distribution networks. Additionally, residuals are directly interpolated instead of hydraulic head values. The results of applying the proposed method to a well-known case study (Modena) demonstrated the improvements of the new interpolation method with respect to a state-of-the-art approach, both in terms of interpolation error (considering state and residual estimation) and posterior localization. Label Cluster Chains for Multi-Label Classification

Multi-label classification is a type of supervised machine learning that can simultaneously assign multiple labels to an instance. To solve this task, some methods divide the original problem into several sub-problems (local approach), others learn all labels at once (global approach), and others combine several classifiers (ensemble approach). Regardless of the approach used, exploring and learning label correlations is important to improve the classifier predictions. Ensemble of Classifier Chains (ECC) is a well-known multi-label method that considers label correlations and can achieve good overall performance on several multi-label datasets and evaluation measures. However, one of the challenges when working with ECC is the high dimensionality of the label space, which can impose limitations for fully-cascaded chains as the complexity increases regarding feature space expansion. To improve classifier chains, we propose a method to chain disjoint correlated label clusters obtained by applying a partition method in the label space. During the training phase, the ground truth labels of each cluster are used as new features for all of the following clusters. During the test phase, the predicted labels of clusters are used as new features for all the following clusters. Our proposal, called Label Cluster Chains for Multi-Label Classification (LCC-ML), uses multi-label Random Forests as base classifiers in each cluster, combining their predictions to obtain a final multi-label classification. Our proposal obtained better results compared to the original ECC.
