Tracking control of Networked and Interconnected Systems

Networked and interconnected systems denote a class of systems that consists of physically coupled subsystems that can exchange information via a communication network. This paper presents a new design method for tracking controllers, which guarantee that the output of each subsystem follows a specified trajectory. Each controller is synthesised by a design agent that is introduced as a local component with limited knowledge of the overall system. Each design agent uses the network to gain information that is necessary for the controller synthesis. The information exchange takes places exclusively at design time and concerns an important aspect of this work. The method presented in this paper extends classical two-degree-of-freedom controllers by decoupling units. These units are essential for achieving the desired tracking. It is proven that the proposed extension yields the desired trajectory tracking. A simulation study demonstrates the applicability. © 2018

This paper considers distributed optimization for minimizing the average of local nonconvex cost functions, by using local information exchange over undirected communication networks. To reduce the required communication capacity, we introduce an encoder–decoder scheme. By integrating it with distributed gradient tracking and proportional integral algorithms, respectively, we then propose two quantized distributed nonconvex optimization algorithms. Assuming the global cost function satisfies the Polyak–Lojasiewicz condition, which does not require the global cost function to be convex and the global minimizer is not necessarily unique, we show that our proposed algorithms linearly converge to a global optimal point. Moreover, we show that a low data rate is sufficient to guarantee linear convergence when the algorithm parameters are properly chosen. The theoretical results are illustrated by numerical examples. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Cloud-based energy management systems (EMS) in smart grids face privacy challenges, as existing methods based on traditional homomorphic encryption support limited operations and are vulnerable to quantum attacks. We propose a privacy preservation method for smart grid energy management system, leveraging edge-assisted computing and ring learning with errors (RLWE) homomorphic encryption. Our approach enables both addition and multiplication operations on encrypted smart grid data while defending against quantum threats. We demonstrate the methods security under the RLWE hardness assumption and validate its effectiveness through an experimental platform simulating smart grid environments. This work addresses computational limitations in current privacy-preserving techniques, enhancing data security for evolving smart grid technologies © 2010-2012 IEEE.

Exploring Token-Level Augmentation in Vision Transformer for Semi-Supervised Semantic Segmentation

Semi-supervised semantic segmentation has witnessed remarkable advancements in recent years. However, existing algorithms are based on convolutional neural networks and directly applying them to Vision Transformers poses certain limitations due to conceptual disparities. To this end, we propose TokenMix, a data augmentation technique specifically designed for semi-supervised semantic segmentation with Vision Transformers. TokenMix aligns well with the global attention mechanism by mixing images at the token level, enhancing learning capability for contextual information among image patches. We further incorporate image augmentation and feature augmentation to promote the diversity of augmentation. Moreover, to enhance consistency regularization, we propose a dual-branch framework where each branch applies image and feature augmentation to the input image. We conduct extensive experiments across multiple benchmark datasets, including Pascal VOC 2012, Cityscapes, and COCO. Results suggest that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms with notably observed accuracy improvement, especially under limited fine annotations. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Cooperative Fault-Tolerant control of Networked control Systems

This paper proposes a new design method for the fault-tolerant control of networked control systems, which consists of subsystems that are physically coupled and connected via a communication network. The control objective requires that the overall system follows a given trajectory. It is satisfied if all subsystems follow specified local trajectories. If a subsystem is affected by a fault, it cannot follow its trajectory any longer and thus causes the control objective to be violated. This paper concerns actuator failures that make a local controller reconfiguration impossible. The new idea is to design cooperative fault-tolerant controllers in which the non-faulty subsystems must follow new local trajectories in order to compensate the deviant behaviour of the faulty subsystem. As no global coordinator exists in the networked system, the subsystems use communication-based two-degrees of freedom controllers to ensure the trajectory tracking. The applicability of this method is demonstrated in an experiment. © 2018

Most proposed memristor-based circuits of associative memory consider various mechanisms in only one associative memory. Few works on circuit design of sequential associative memory have been reported. In this paper, a memristor-based circuit of sequential associative memory with memory interactions and stimulus similarity effect is designed. Two associative memories, the prior associative memory (PAM) and the later associative memory (LAM), are formed successively. The PAM modifies the rate of the formation of the LAM, and the LAM, in turn, affects the strength of the PAM, which are two interactions in sequential associative memory, called transfer and retroaction. In addition, the magnitudes of transfer and retroaction are determined by the similarity of the conditioned stimuli. The above functions are realized by the ring input processing module, memory module, transfer module and retroaction module. It has been identified in circuit analysis that the proposed circuit is power efficient and has good robustness. Furthermore, the proposed circuit has promising applications for fire rescue robots. © 2016 IEEE.

In batch pulp cooking the heating steam is used only in some phases of the technological procedure. This causes large variations in steam now-rate and imposes high dynamic load at the steam generation plant. In the paper,a system for smooth steam consumption control is presented. It is based on three multiloop microprocessor-based controllers. The designed control structure is simple enough to be implemented as a stand-alone small-sized control system. Also, it provides a low-cost solution by eliminating the need to measure the steam now-rate on each digester. After the installation a reduction of 70% in steam now-rate variance was measured.

Conceptual model for process control software specification

The paper presents a method for software specification in the domain of industrial process control. As a result of ever more demanding applications, particularly in the area of PLC based control, there is an emerging need for introducing methods that include an appropriate conceptual model and define the specification process. An approach to the method development is presented, based on an architectural extension of the Ward-Mellor structured real time software engineering method. The core of the method is a conceptual model of the equipment control specification, which consists of two essential parts: the first is that of process equipment entities, and the second is the functional part. The former is further decomposed in relation to two aspects of the process equipment entities: the structural aspect and the classification aspect. In order to make the conceptual model more clear some segments of the real process control application dealing with the hydrolysis process in the production of TiO2 are given. Performance analysis of platoons with adaptive cruise control

The paper investigates under what conditions the controlled vehicles in a platoon follow the time-headway spacing policy and can be guaranteed to avoid collisions. The first result is a requirement on the vehicle delay, which is a quantity that is directly related to the dynamics of the controlled vehicles. The second result shows that if the controlled vehicles have specified first-order dynamics, they follow the time-headway policy permanently and, hence, avoid collisions in all possible situations. For higher-order vehicles, a robustness approach is developed that uses the specified first-order model as approximate representation of the controlled vehicles and analyses how far the platoon may deviate from the behaviour of this ideal platoon. Examples demonstrate that these deviations are usually very small so that the collision avoidance guarantee can be transferred from the approximate model to the real platoon. © 2018
