The operation control for complex industrial processes consists of two layer - loop control layer and operational control layer. The former aims at achieving the required loop control for each production unit along production line whilst the later optimizes the set-points to the control loops so that certain performance indexes (such as product quality and energy cost) is optimized when the closed loop controlled variables follow their set-points well. This paper presents a novel method that can be used to analyze the performance deterioration of the optimized operational control, where the impact of tracking errors of loop control to the optimized performance is quantitatively formulated when the tracking errors are small. It has been shown that loop tracking errors would generally deteriorate the optimized performance in a quadratic way - leading to the establishment of the square impact principle (SIP). Moreover, it has been shown that the production infrastructure will also affect the deterioration of the optimized performance. Formulation on the analysis on the flat robustness (FR) and randomness of the optimized performance indexes will also be made and several issues on the future studies are listed.

Finite-time H∞ control for Markov jump systems with non-homogeneous transition probabilities

This paper solves the problem of finite-time H∞ control for a class of discrete-time Markovian jump systems with time varying (non-homogeneous) transition probabilities (TPs). The time varying characteristics of TPs is described by Gaussian transition probability density function. Then sufficient conditions which ensure finite-time stabilization and H∞ performance index are derived for all admissible unknown external disturbances and random time varying TPs in linear matrix inequalities forms. Finally, numerical example is given to verify the efficiency of the proposed method. © 2014 ISSN 1881-803X.

Determination of state changes for distributed parameter systems based on quantitative POD angle analysis

For distributed parameter systems, recognition of state change is crucial to process operation with a wide range of motivations, for example, sensitivity analysis of input condition, selection of operating point and abnormal situation diagnosis, etc. A key task therein is developing a criterion from which the extent of state change can quantitatively determinated. In this paper, a novel concept, namely the POD (proper orthogonal decomposition) angle is proposed to form such a criterion, which is developed from the POD technique. Based on this new concept, some of its theoretical properties are also described and proven along with the introduction of POD angle. As an illustrative example for the usage of POD angle, a cyclohexane process is studied where the POD angle is used to analyze the influence of feed temperature on the temperature distribution of whole system. It is demonstrated that when feed temperature is operated in the range of 100 to 120 °, the POD angle will experience a change of 17.8022°, corresponding to fluctuant amplitude of 82.0309 ° for the system temperature. Therefore, temperature distribution of system is sensitive to feed temperature in this situation. On the other hand, when feed temperature is operated in the range of 120 to 200 °, the POD angle changes only 1.1595° on average whilst the temperature distribution of whole system average varies only 5.0486 °, hence we conclude that the feed temperature imposes a minor impact on the temperature of the system as compared with the former case. © 2014 IFSA Publishing, S. In this paper, the fuzzy [Formula: see text] output-feedback control problem is investigated for a class of discrete-time T-S fuzzy systems with channel fadings, sector nonlinearities, randomly occurring interval delays (ROIDs) and randomly occurring nonlinearities (RONs). A series of variables of the randomly occurring phenomena obeying the Bernoulli distribution is used to govern ROIDs and RONs. Meanwhile, the measurement outputs are subject to the sector nonlinearities ( the sensor saturations) and we assume the system output is [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]. The th-order Rice model is utilized to describe the phenomenon of channel fadings by setting different values of the channel coefficients. The aim of this work is to deal with the problem of designing a full-order dynamic fuzzy [Formula: see text] output-feedback controller such that the fuzzy closed-loop system is exponentially mean-square stable and the [Formula: see text] performance constraint is satisfied, by means of a combination of Lyapunov stability theory and stochastic analysis along with LMI methods. The proposed fuzzy controller parameters are derived by solving a convex optimization problem via the semidefinite programming technique. Finally, a numerical simulation is given to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed design technique.

In this paper, a PD controller which uses optical flow to obtain position and velocity feedback is proposed for the autonomous hovering flight control of a nano quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV). The nano quadrotor UAV has a mass less than 100 g and is comparatively much smaller than the micro vehicles utilized in previous research. Due to the limited size and payload ability, a wireless camera is employed as the onboard visual device to obtain the position and translational velocity of the UAV. Experiment results are included to demonstrate the good control performance of the proposed design.

Automatic calibration method of voxel size for cone-beam 3D-CT scanning system

For a cone-beam three-dimensional computed tomography （3D-CT） scanning system, voxel size is an important indicator to guarantee the accuracy of data analysis and feature measurement based on 3D-CT images. Meanwhile, the voxel size changes with the movement of the rotary stage along X-ray direction. In order to realize the automatic calibration of the voxel size, a new and easily-implemented method is proposed. According to this method, several projections of a spherical phantom are captured at different imaging positions and the corresponding voxel size values are calculated by non-linear least-square fitting. Through these interpolation values, a linear equation is obtained that reflects the relationship between the voxel size and the rotary stage translation distance from its nominal zero position. Finally, the linear equation is imported into the calibration module of the 3D-CT scanning system. When the rotary stage is moving along X-ray direction, the accurate value of the voxel size is dynamically exported. The experimental results prove that this method meets the requirements of the actual CT scanning system, and has virtues of easy implementation and high accuracy.

This article presents a new scheme to design full matrix controller for high dimensional multivariable processes based on equivalent transfer function (ETF). Differing from existing ETF method, the proposed ETF is derived directly by exploiting the relationship between the equivalent closed-loop transfer function and the inverse of open-loop transfer function. Based on the obtained ETF, the full matrix controller is designed utilizing the existing PI tuning rules. The new proposed ETF model can more accurately represent the original processes. Furthermore, the full matrix centralized controller design method proposed in this paper is applicable to high dimensional multivariable systems with satisfactory performance. Comparison with other multivariable controllers shows that the designed ETF based controller is superior with respect to design-complexity and obtained performance. © 2014 ISA. Hybrid electric vehicles offer the possibility of driving electrically with the combustion engine shut off. However, this leads to cooling of the catalyst, which may significantly worsen the vehicle emissions. In this contribution, first a vehicle model including thermal models of the exhaust gas aftertreatment is introduced. Based on a reference battery state of charge trajectory for the predicted trip, a fuel optimal online optimization by means of Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle is introduced. It is then extended by further optimization criteria, including the catalyst temperature. Simulations of the New European Driving Cycle show that purely fuel optimal operation leads to a catalyst temperature which is too low for effectively reducing the emissions. The optimization which includes the catalyst temperature is able to keep the catalyst in an operating state with only small effects on the overall fuel consumption. © Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden 2014.

The problem of controller synthesis in a fixed time interval for discrete-time switching Markov jump systems is dealt with in this paper. Compared with the existing results, the new proposed stabilization conditions are obtained by permitting the stochastic Lyapunov energy function to rise at each switching instant, but the switching signal is constraint by an average dwell time. Finally, the validity of the obtained results is demonstrated with an example. © IFAC.

This paper aims to generalize the loop interaction measurement, relative normalized gain array (RNGA), for multivariable systems regarding a class of reference inputs. In the existing studies, RNGA loop pairing criterion is analyzed and widely utilized on the basis of detailed assumption of step reference input. For multivariable systems under step, ramp and other general types of set-point changes, the general loop pairing technique is put forward, and the average residence time is calculated in terms of first order plus delay time and second order plus delay time processes. The analysis results show RNGA based control-loop configuration is independent of input signals, and available to multivariable systems for various reference inputs. Several examples are employed to demonstrate the effectiveness and universality of the pairing approach of this paper. © IFAC.
