Exploring Eye-Tracking Based Biomarkers to Assess Cognitive Abilities in Autistic Children: A Feasibility Study

Cognitive assessment can reveal a person's cognitive processing and behavioral patterns, making it an indispensable component of autism intervention and prognosis. Existing machine-assisted cognitive assessment methods primarily focus on children's performance outcomes, overlooking distinctive behavioral models, particularly characteristics of eye movement behavior, which have been demonstrated as the most direct indicators of cognitive abilities. In this study, we explore eye-tracking biomarkers for assisting cognitive assessment through a series of meticulously designed multi-level human-computer interaction protocols, encompassing three cognitive abilities: pairing and categorization, emotion recognition, and social interaction. A platform embedded with an eye-tracking module has been developed to reliably collect and analyze eye movement data, even in the presence of unrestricted large head movements in children. Experimental results indicate that there are significant group differences between autism and typically developing children in the eye-tracking features of total fixation duration, response latency, time to first fixation, mean fixation duration, and visit count in the absence of significant intergroup differences in the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) assessment results. In addition, certain eye-tracking features in each group are correlated with WPPSI/WISC scale scores, enabling clinical cognitive assessments within each group based on these eye movement features. This study suggests that using eye-tracking features as biomarkers to assist detailed cognitive assessments holds significant potential for the intervention and prognosis of autism. © 2013 IEEE.

Soft manipulators are known for their superiority in coping with high-safety-demanding interaction tasks, e.g., robot-assisted surgeries, elderly caring, etc. Yet the challenges residing in real-time contact feedback have hindered further applications in precise manipulation. This paper proposes an end-to-end network to estimate the 3D contact force of the soft robot, with the aim of enhancing its capabilities in interactive tasks. The presented method features directly utilizing monocular images fused with multidimensional actuation information as the network inputs. This approach simplifies the preprocessing of raw data compared to related studies that utilize 3D shape information for network inputs, consequently reducing configuration reconstruction errors. The unified feature representation module is devised to elevate low-dimensional features from the system's actuation signals to the same level as image features, facilitating smoother integration of multimodal information. The proposed method has been experimentally validated in the soft robot testbed, achieving satisfying accuracy in 3D force estimation (with a mean relative error of 0.84% compared to the best-reported result of 2.2% in the related works). © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents designs for ultra-high-frequency (UHF) electromagnetic sensors based on printed circuit board (PCB) antennas for partial discharge (PD) detection in gas-insulated substations (GIS) applications. The sensors were designed to meet the requirement of narrowband/wideband UHF measuring systems for the UHF PD detection in GIS. The PD signals in the physical characteristic of the high-frequency electromagnetic (EM) wave were detected using the designed UHF antennas, which include the inset-fed rectangular microstrip patch (IFRMP) antennas, known for their narrowband characteristics that offer high interference signal rejection to improve signal-to-noise ratio and the two arm Archimedean spiral (TAAS) antennas, recognized for their broadband frequency spectrum capability. Because UHF PD signals are typically detected using various field sensor designs, both IFRMP and TAAS antennas were designed for three different models under calculation and simulation using MATLAB to apply in different operating frequency bands within the UHF range of PD detection (300 MHz-3 GHz). The designed UHF antennas have very characteristics, i.e. portable, lightweight, and attractive for practical applications with a low fabrication cost. Additionally, they are more convenient to install on the insulating flange compared to some types of external antenna sensors. In terms of antenna performance, they exhibit parameters like return loss (parameter S11) less than -10 dB and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) less than 2 within a close range of the designed operating frequency. Using the designed antennas, the phase-resolved PD (PRPD) patterns, the statistical magnitudes and waveforms of detected UHF signal have been obtained from laboratory testing for the sensitivity verification to help users in the effective application of the UHF PD detection. © 2024 IEEE.

Fault detection in electric drives is crucial for ensuring operational reliability and minimizing downtime. This paper provides a brief overview of the methods based on machine learning used for fault detection in electric drives. Additional this research presents a machine learning approach that utilizes the Long Short-Term Memory Autoencoder model for fault detection deal with bearing faults. A flowchart illustrating the implementation steps of the Long Short-Term Memory Autoencoder algorithm is included. Additionally, a case study on bearing faults in an electric drive system is presented to demonstrate the advantage of the proposed approach. By training the Long Short-Term Memory Autoencoder on operational data, accurate prediction of bearing faults is achieved, enabling timely maintenance interventions. It is shown that in the 7th epoch of training, the model achieved a notably high accuracy more than 99%. The results highlight the potential of Long Short-Term Memory Autoencoder models as a valuable tool for fault detection in electric drives, thereby improving system reliability and performance. © 2024 IEEE.

3d-transition metal(Fe,Co,Ni,and Mn)-based MXene materials have been predicted to demonstrate exceptional electrochemical performance because of their good electrical conductivity and the presence of metallic atoms with multiple charge ***,until now,there have been no reports on MXenes based on Fe,Co,Ni,and Mn,due to the lack of 3d-metal-layered ***,we successfully synthesized the first 3d-transition metal-based MXenes,Mn_(2)CT_(x) by exfoliating a layered precursor derived from the anti-perovskite bulk *** as-prepared Mn_(2)CT_(x) MXene nanosheets were employed as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries,which exhibited stable storage capacity of 764.7 mAh·g^(-1) at 0.5 C,placing its storage capacities at an upper-middle level compared with other reported MXene materials as well as other Mn-based anode ***,this study opens a new avenue for MXene research by synthesizing 3d-transition metal-based MXenes for electrochemical applications.

The coarse pointing assembly (CPA), as the outer loop of the laser terminal, its tracking stability is the basis for ensuring laser communication. This paper presents the model of the CPA. Aiming at the disturbance factors in the low-speed operation process of the CPA, an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) method for the position loop of the CPA is designed based on the generalized proportional integral observer (GPIO) to achieve disturbance compensation control. Finally, simulations are carried out on the system model. The simulation results show that compared with the PID control strategy adopted, the proposed ADRC strategy based on GPIO of the CPA can effectively improve the tracking accuracy. © 2024 IEEE.

In this article, an adaptive event-triggered asymp¬totically fault-tolerant control (FTC) issue for nonlinear systems with actuator faults is investigated. An extended neural networks (NNs) technique is introduced to estimate unknown functions of the system under consideration. Compared with traditional NNs that ignore approximation errors, the proposed extended NNs further processes approximation errors, reducing the conservatism of the proposed algorithm. Then, within the framework of backstepping method, a new adaptive control strategy is developed by combining event-triggered mechanism (ETM) and bound estimation (BE) approach, which ensures the asymptotic convergence of system states while also reducing the transmission of unnecessary information, thus improving the utilization of communication resources. At the same time, the designed controller eliminates the adverse effects of actuator failures and system nonlinear terms. Finally, a simulation example of a single-link robot system is provided to demonstrate that the developed control strategy can ensure that all signals are bounded and system states are asymptotically convergent. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, the attack detection problem is investigated for a class of closed-loop systems subjected to unknownbutbounded noises in the presence of stealthy attacks. The measurement outputs from the sensors are quantized before transmission.A specific type of perfect stealthy attack, which meets certain rather stringent conditions, is taken into account. Such attacks could be injected by adversaries into both the sensor-toestimator and controller-to-actuator channels, with the aim of disrupting the normal data flow. For the purpose of defending against these perfect stealthy attacks, a novel scheme based on watermarks is developed. This scheme includes the injection of watermarks(applied to data prior to quantization) and the recovery of data(implemented before the data reaches the estimator).The watermark-based scheme is designed to be both timevarying and hidden from adversaries through incorporating a time-varying and bounded watermark signal. Subsequently, a watermark-based attack detection strategy is proposed which thoroughly considers the characteristics of perfect stealthy attacks,thereby ensuring that an alarm is activated upon the occurrence of such attacks. An example is provided to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed mechanism for detecting attacks.
