Skin cancer poses a serious global health challenge, where timely and precise diagnosis is essential to improve patient outcomes. Recently, neural networks have proven to be highly effective tools for automated skin cancer classification, significantly advancing the field of dermatology. This paper introduces a novel approach to generate edge maps from dermoscopic images using a holistically nested edge detector model. These edge maps enhance the detection of shape and symmetry irregularities, which are key indicators of malignancy, and improve the focus on relevant regions of interest. We then propose an edge-guided dual-branch neural network, called EDB-Net, for the classification task. Branch 1 handles edge maps, while Branch 2 processes original dermoscopic images. To highlight significant regions and focus on specific lesion areas, we incorporate a novel channel-spatial synergistic attention block within Branch 2. Additionally, we introduce a unique strategy to modulate the generated attention maps using edge features extracted from the edge maps in Branch 1, creating edge-guided features that refine the overall feature representation. In the final stage, both edge-guided and attention-aided features are combined, producing more distinct and contextually relevant outputs, thereby significantly enhancing classification performance. Our model achieves accuracies of 0.927 and 0.848 on the challenging HAM10000 and ISIC 2016 datasets, respectively, without employing any data augmentation. Fault diagnosis and prognosis in discrete event systems are studied in the scenario where the observations are possibly received with delay. To address this scenario, two conditions for diagnosis and prognosis with delayed observations are proposed, where we show that the state-of-the-art notion of prognosability must be revised to avoid conservativeness. Diagnosability and prognosability conditions are then verified by introducing a delay observer and a new verification function. Theoretical analysis indicates the effectiveness of the verification method for fault diagnosis and prognosis in the system. © 2024 IEEE.

A population randomization-based multi-objective genetic algorithm for gesture adaptation in human-robot interaction

In recent years, vision-based gesture adaptation has attracted great attention from many experts in the field of human-robot interaction, and many methods have been proposed and successfully applied, such as particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithm. However, the reduction of the error and energy consumption of a robot while paying attention to more subtle attitude changes is very important and *** view of these problems, we propose a population randomization-based multi-objective genetic *** gesture signal is processed with a slight change by imitating the biological evolution mechanisms. In the proposed algorithm, a random out-of-order matrix is added in the process of population evolution synthesis to prevent the premature grouping convergence of the new population. The weights of the objective function and the elite retention strategy are adopted, and the most adaptable individuals in each generation are inherited directly in the next generation without any recombination or mutation. To verify the effectiveness of the algorithm, preliminary application experiments are performed on the gesture adaptation of a robotic arm. The results are compared with the original signal, and the comparison shows that by using the proposed method, the energy consumption is reduced, and the end error is decreased to less than 3 mm while ensuring the tracking effect of the robotic arm. These obtained results meet the communication requirements for human-robot interactions such as handshakes. Moreover, the proposed method has better performance, uses less energy, and has a smaller tracking error than the particle swarm optimization, the single-objective genetic algorithm, and the traditional multi-objective genetic algorithm. A preliminary application experiment indicates that the robotic arm can adapt to human gestures in real time.

This paper proposes a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) based algorithm for charging control of multiple electric vehicles (EVs) in an electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) with dynamic operations. By taking the uncertainties of EV users’ behaviors and charging prices into consideration, a Markov game with multiple objectives is first established, where the individual objective of reducing EV charging costs and the collective objective of mitigating charging load fluctuations are both studied. Then, a multi-agent actor-double-critic (MAADC) algorithm with a unified advantage actor-critic framework is proposed, where two advantage functions are designed as the local and global critics, and the integrated actor is employed to balance the learning towards the individual and collective objectives. The simulation results obtained in a delicately built EVCS environment show the effectiveness of MAADC. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The development of digital twins (DTs) of industrial electrical systems is attributed to the need for the reduction of time and material resource inputs during their virtual commissioning (VC). The same problem occurs during renovation with complete or partial equipment replacement and/or control systems. These problems can be efficiently solved by developing object-oriented DTs based on the Simulink Real Time software and using hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HIL). This software is compatible with Matlab Simulink and the Simscape package, which makes it suitable for the industrial usage. The authors suggest a HIL-based approach that helps make a virtual real-time computer model, with process control signals coming from the industrial PLC that controls the real physical object. This problem occurred during the renovation of the horizontal stand electric drives of a 5000 plate mill. The authors provide the flow charts of the electromechanical system and the object-oriented DT. The implementation of DT in Matlab Simulink Desktop Real Time is reviewed in laboratory settings. The authors present the block structures that make up a virtual model of the electromechanical system. The developed DT was used to adjust control algorithms and controllers and study the dynamic modes over a rolling cycle. The adequacy of the processes was tested by comparing the oscillograms obtained with the developed DT and the rolling mill. The authors stress the feasibility of developing DTs on the Simulink Real Time platform using HIL simulation during VC and renovation of complex industrial objects. © 2024 IEEE.

Joint detection and tracking of multiple targets in infrared images is critical to video surveillance and has a variety of applications. In this paper, we present a new detection-by-detection tracking method for the online tracking of small moving targets using a labeled random finite set (RFS) framework. The first step is to perform image processing using Laplacian of Gaussian filters and density-based clustering to detect multiple targets. We then use the positions of numerous detected targets and false alarms as a set of measurements to predict valid data in RFS frames. The prediction of the next state is obtained recursively from the last state and the kinematic model. Finally, we solve the data association problem by generating an assignment matrix between the predicted states and the current detected measurements to generate the next states and track labels for multiple targets. The experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively track and recognize small infrared targets in real multi-frame infrared target tracking scenarios.

This report reviews an example of acoustic positioning of partial discharges (PD) in the tank of a high-voltage oil-filled transformer. The literature review confirms the importance of PD monitoring and justifies the feasibility of positioning discharge activity centers. The precise positioning of PD sources is required to determine the location of insulation defects. The authors provide brief information on the development of PD positioning methods and note that their practical application has been insufficiently covered in publications. They present the results of electromagnetic and acoustic PD positioning in a 110 kV transformer. Some details are provided on the devices and measurement methods used, including the localization of areas with increased PD intensity using one acoustic sensor and the subsequent center localization through the installation of 4 sensors at even intervals. The authors provide PD signals and defect impulses received from each of the sensors and demonstrate the difference in the registration time of these signals. They explain the principle behind PD center positioning, which is determined considering delays in signal reception. The authors demonstrate the usage of the Inva (Portable) software for the processing and visualization of acoustic positioning results. They note that changes in the propagation rate of acoustic waves in a heterogeneous medium result in the reduced accuracy of results. The authors also outline the prospects of the research into the elimination of occurring defects. © 2024 IEEE.
