Power systems form one of the largest and most complex technical systems. Changes of load parameters may lead to so called bifurcations, resulting in nonlinear phenomena like voltage collapse or interarea oscillations. Special software tools are able to simulate these systems and to identify bifurcations. This paper presents a systematic approach to determine gain factors of Flexible AC Transmission Devices (FACTS) considering changes of load parameters. This approach is applied to two different power system models.

This paper describes a practical ambient temperature dependant battery state of charge (SOC) estimation algorithm that can determine the SOC of a battery operating under load conditions. SOC is an essential parameter in a monitoring system, which is the basis of a battery management system (BMS). Temperature has a profound effect on the actual capacity or SOC of the battery. The proposed model in this paper determines the SOC by incorporating the changes occurring to charge acceptance, power deliverable and internal resistance due to the variations in temperature.

The intention of this paper is the analysis of general concepts for preferential crystallisation with the focus on aspects of quantification. In this preliminary examination, the amino acid threonine was used as a model system. The use of on-line polarimetry in combination with on-line densimetry as well as microscopic investigation enables to obtain some indispensable information about the crystallisation kinetics. Taking these estimated values into consideration a simplified mathematical description as a first approach including a population balance model was established for the simulation of the time changes of liquid phase composition during the preferential crystallisation process. Based on this simplified model different crystalliser configurations were investtigated.

Current pig house cleaning procedures are hazardous to the health of farm workers, and yet necessary if the spread of disease between batches of animals is to be satisfactorily controlled. Autonomous cleaning using robot technology offers salient benefits. This paper addresses the feasibility of designing a vision-based system to locate dirty areas and subsequently direct a cleaning robot to remove dirt. Novel results include the characterisation of the spectral properties of real surfaces and dirt in a pig house and the design of illumination to obtain discrimination of clean from dirty areas with a low probability of misclassification. A Bayesian discriminator is shown to be efficient in this context and implementation of a prototype tool demonstrates the feasibility of designing a low-cost vision-based sensor for autonomous cleaning.

Computer algebra software tools in general, and the MATHEMATICA system in particular, are increasingly employed during the controls and systems graduate and undergraduate courses at FEE CTU in Prague. MATHEMATICA benefits from its high-level user interface, graphical abilities, as well as numerical and symbolic computational power and dedicated packages for controlsystems analysts and design (controlsystems professional and advanced numerical methods). In addition, MATHEMATICA provides a Web-based platform for publication of results and presenting user-callable routines (webMATHEMATICA). In the Czech Republic a project financed by the Ministry of Education and called PUMA (power user mathematic array) has been started recently, focused on creation of Web-accessible software tools to support education at technical universities. The authors have been involved in these efforts and would like to contribute by creating a Web site based on webMATHEMATICA dedicated to numerical and symbolic computations for systems and controls. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) formation in a leader-follower structure, where the UAVs are flying a common trajectory determined by a route planner hosted on the leader is considered. The path description is compressed by polynomial functions with respect to the flight envelope constraints and transmitted to the followers, where a model predictive control (MPC) outer loop controller specifies the command signals for the 7-h locally controlled dynamics with respect to the nonlinear constraints of the aircraft dynamics. Real time feasibility issues associated with the design are discussed.

The paper deals with optimization of an FPGA implementation of iterative algorithms with nested loops, using integer linear programming. The scheduling is demonstrated on an example of the FI-CMA blind equalization algorithm, with implementation using limited (and small) number of arithmetic units with non-zero latency. The optimization is based on cyclic scheduling with precedence delays for distinct dedicated processors. The approach is based on construction of an optimally scheduled abstract model, modeling imperfectly nested loops.
