A PSO with increasing inertia weight, distinct from a widely used PSO with decreasing inertia weight, is proposed in this paper. Four standard test functions with asymmetric initial range settings are used to confirm its validity. From the experiments, it is clear that a PSO with increasing inertia weight outperforms the one with decreasing inertia weight, both in convergent speed and solution precision, with no additional computing load compared with the PSO with a decreasing inertia weight.

For the operation of boom cranes a significant high level of experience is needed to achieve a large amount of handled containers. Therefore, automationsystems with anti-sway abilities for boom cranes were developed to increase the handling rate especially for inexperienced crane operators. In the paper, an optimal control approach is presented as an alternative to feedback controlsystems. After deriving the nonlinear dynamic model, the anti-sway problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimal control problem. The numerical solution method for this optimal control problem is presented. The results are illustrated at measurements for the harbour mobile crane LIEBHERR LHM400.

The fault detection and identification based upon multivariate statistical projection methods (such as principal component analysis, PCA) have attracted more and more interest in academic research and engineering practice. In this paper, PCA and statistical control chart have been used to detect and isolate process operating faults on an industrial rolling mill reheating furnace. The diagnosing results to single fault (fuel-gas pipe control valve failure or furnace temperature sensor failure alone) and multiple faults (control valve failure and temperature sensor failure simultaneously) were presented after establishing the operating PCA model. The calculating result indicates that the method is effective and available.

Rapid advances in the real-time embedded operating systems necessitate the development of Internet oriented application specific embedded operating systems. The ASOS (application specific embedded operating systems) has now become a promising research direction of the embedded operating system. The paper clarifies the concept of the ASOS, and takes the embedded operating system applied in the traffic signal controller we are now developing to illustrate the main characteristics of the ASOS. Benefits from the CBSE (component-based software engineering) include system quality improvement, shorter time to market, integration of complex systems, etc. However, as for the embedded system, the component-based technology and theories still in an exploration period, though many projects are carried on. The dynamic vehicle routing problem, DVRP, consists in optimally routing a fleet occur at random. The optimization consists in finding the solution that minimizes the total length of tours and satisfying the customer delivery time window. In this paper, we present a hybrid ant system to handle the dynamism by means of modifying the pheromone matrix and candidate sets strategy. In addition, we make further improvements on vehicle routes with the local search heuristics. The results show that the hybrid ant system works effectively to find competitive solutions.
