In this paper a novel type of gain-shape vector quantization (GSVQ) is presented, denoted as Logarithmic Cubic Vector Quantization (LCVQ). LCVQ is based on a decomposition of the vector to be quantized into a gain factor and a shape vector which is a normalized version of the input vector. Both components are quantized independently and transmitted to the decoder. Compared to other GSVQ approaches, in LCVQ the input vectors are normalized such that all shape vectors are located on the surface of the unit hypercube. As a conclusion, the shape vector quantizer can be realized based on uniform scalar quantizers. This yields low computational complexity as well as high memory efficiency even in case of very high vector dimensions. In order to demonstrate the coding efficiency of the proposed quantization scheme, LCVQ is compared to existing quantization schemes, in particular the recently proposed Logarithmic Spherical Vector Quantization (LSVQ) [1].

A novel concept for the determination of the weighting coefficients for weighted delay-and-sum microphone arrays is introduced in this contribution. The concept is based on a numerical optimization of the reception characteristic of the microphone array. The optimization procedure is shown to improve the reception characteristic in such a way that it closely approximates a target which can be defined according to the application.

A novel hierarchical multi-channel coding scheme is proposed which exhibits a significant decrease in decoding complexity compared to earlier proposals. The new coding scheme is based on a single channel down-mixing process followed by predictions of the multichannel input signals. Symmetries in the prediction filter coefficients and the prediction errors allow for a reduced number of channels which need to be transmitted. A detailed evaluation of the achievable prediction gain and the impact of quantization on the perceived quality leads to insights into the appropriate choice of system parameters. Besides the attractive feature of being usable as a hierarchic extension to existing single channel communication systems and its very low additional algorithmic delay, the transmission quality of the proposed design also scales very well with the available data rate.

In this contribution we investigate the energy efficiency of network-based acoustic echo control (AEC). Usually, AEC is implemented in the mobile terminal. Due to the limited resources of the mobile terminal in terms of the battery, computational capacity and memory, the complexity of the AEC algorithm has to be limited. In this paper we will investigate the idea to move the AEC processing from the mobile terminal to a network-based processing unit which allows to use more sophisticated algorithms. As this might require the use of improved speech codecs with higher bit rate, we will evaluate the trade-off between increased power for the radio transmission with additional bit rate and the reduced power for signal processing at the mobile terminal. This implies to take into consideration the attenuation of the radio channel according to, e.g., the Okumura-Hata path loss model.

Binaural rendering is based on head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) to reproduce the soundfield around the listener using stereo-headphones. Especially, for the perception of moving sound sources, a high angular resolution of the measured HRTFs is needed. A continuous HRTF representation with quasi-infinite azimuthal resolution can be obtained with a system identification approach which relies on a sequentially recursive adaptation process. As a consequence, it enables by nature the sequential access of HRTFs, e.g., for the virtualization of rotating sound sources. However, so far the direct access of a HRTF of an arbitrary azimuthal position, for a sudden change of the sound source position, is not possible without knowledge of neighboring HRTFs. To overcome this limitation, we present a new implementation strategy enabling a flexible, i.e., a sequential and direct, access of 'Perfect Sequence LMS based HRTFs'. We will prove that we obtain numerically the same high-quality HRTFs as before, without increase of storage requirements, and a significantly reduced computational complextity.

Linear analog block codes have been considered for transmission of discrete-time and continuous-amplitude data. In this paper, the fidelity measure parameter SNR (pSNR) at the receiver is derived for an arbitrary generator matrix P using an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. In contrast to [1], it is shown that the performance of linear analog bock codes is dependent on the eigenvalues of the matrix PTP and not only on the dimensions of the matrix P. Surprisingly, the quality of the received values is independent of the code rate r, and e.g. a simple identity matrix has the optimal eigenvalues. Furthermore, the theoretical fidelity bound OPTA (Optimum Performance Theoretically Attainable) is used to assess the performance of a transmission system of continuous-amplitude data.

This paper presents an ACELP-based speech transmission scheme that is robust to frame erasures. The scheme is based on the steganographic transmission of media-specific FEC codes. These FEC codes are intended to prevent the adaptive codebook desynchronization frequently found in the decoder after a frame erasure. They are based on a multipulse representation of the previous frame excitation. By means of steganographic methods, the FEC codes are embedded into the codec bitstream, thus causing no bit rate increase. In particular, an ACELP-specfic steganography approach exploits the inefficiencies in the ACELP codebook search and imposes certain algebraic restrictions which allow the hiding of data in the ACELP codewords. Effectively, side information can be transmitted without compromising the codec speech quality. The performance of our proposal is evaluated with the well-known AMR ACELP codec, both in terms of speech quality and intelligibility. To this end, objective measures, i.e. PESQ and STOI, are applied. The proposed coding scheme achieves a noticeable improvement over the legacy codec under adverse channel conditions without consuming any additional bit rate. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this contribution a new wideband audio coding concept is presented that provides good audio quality at bit rates below 3 bits per sample with an algorithmic delay of less than 10 ms. The new concept is based on the principle of Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) in an analysis-by-synthesis framework, as known from speech coding. A spherical codebook is used for quantization at bit rates which are higher in comparison to low bit rate speech coding for improved performance for audio signals. For superior audio quality, noise shaping is employed to mask the coding noise. In order to reduce the computational complexity of the encoder, the analysis-bysynthesis framework has been adapted for the spherical codebook to enable a very efficient excitation vector search procedure. The codec principle can be adapted to a large variety of application scenarios. In terms of audio quality, the new codec outperforms ITU-T G.722 [4] at the same bit rate of 48 kbit/sec and a sample rate of 16 kHz.

Digital fountain codes over higher order Galois fields exhibit a better performance than their binary counter- parts under maximum likelyhood (ML) decoding when transmitted over a symbol erasure channel (SEC). Especially random linear fountain (RLF) codes exhibit an excellent performance, though at the expense of a high computational complexity for decoding due to their high density generator matrix. For practical applications, we propose RLF codes with a reduced density over higher order Galois fields. Although the reduction of the density results in an error floor at higher reception overheads, the level of this error floor can be well controlled by two parameters. For error floor levels that are tolerable in practical applications, a significant density reduction and thus a reduction of the computational complexity can be achieved. Furthermore, we derive a general upper bound on the symbol erasure rate for Luby Transform (LT) codes over Galois fields Fq of order q. Finally, we propose a method to enhance decoding of Fq-codes in the presence of bit erasures by using the binary images of the Fq-elements, such that not complete Fq-elements have to be discarded if their binary counterparts are impaired by bit erasures.

Finite length LT codes over higher order Galois fields F q for unequal error protection (UEP) are analysed under maximum likelihood (ML) decoding. We consider a biased sampling method to create the LT code graph. In contrast to a previous approach by Rahnavard et al., where a predetermined number of edges is created per importance class given a check node of degree d, our procedure allows to precisely adjust the desired class weights. Moreover, we provide upper and lower bounds on the symbol erasure probability for each importance class.
