Estimating communication skills based on multimodal information in group discussions

This paper focuses on developing a model for estimating communication skills of each participant in a group from multimodal (verbal and nonverbal) features. For this purpose, we use a multimodal group meeting corpus including audio signal data and head motion sensor data of participants observed in 30 group meeting sessions. The corpus also includes the communication skills of each participant, which is assessed by 21 external observers with the experience of human resource management. We extracted various kinds of features such as spoken utterances, acoustic features, speaking turns and the amount of head motion to estimate the communication skills. First, we created a regression model to infer the level of communication skills from these features using support vector regression to evaluate the estimation accuracy of the communication skills. Second, we created a binary (high or low) classification model using support vector machine. Experiment results show that the multimodal model achieved 0.62 in R2 as the regression accuracy of overall skill, and also achieved 0.93 as the classification accuracy. This paper reports effective features in predicting the level of communication skill and shows that these features are also useful in characterizing the difference between the participants who have high level communication skills and those who do not. © 2016, Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence. Determining the stability of molecules and condensed phases is the cornerstone of atomistic modelling, underpinning our understanding of chemical and materials properties and transformations. Here we show that a machine-learning model, based on a local description of chemical environments and Bayesian statistical learning, provides a unified framework to predict atomic-scale properties. It captures the quantum mechanical effects governing the complex surface reconstructions of silicon, predicts the stability of different classes of molecules with chemical accuracy, and distinguishes active and inactive protein ligands with more than 99% reliability. The universality and the systematic nature of our framework provides new insight into the potential energy surface of materials and molecules. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This article reports the first observation of the Moon and the Sun shadows in the sky distribution of cosmic-ray induced muons measured by the KM3NeT/ORCA detector. The analysed data-taking period spans from February 2020 to November 2021, when the detector had 6 Detection Units deployed at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, each composed of 18 Digital Optical Modules. The shadows induced by the Moon and the Sun were detected at their nominal position with a statistical significance of 4.2σ and 6.2σ, and an angular resolution of σres = 0.49◦ and σres = 0.66◦, respectively, consistent with the prediction of 0.53◦ from simulations. This early result confirms the effectiveness of the detector calibration, in time, position and orientation and the accuracy of the event direction reconstruction. The detection of astrophysical vτ is an important verification of the observed flux of high-energy neutrinos. A flavour ratio of approximately ve : vμ : vτ ≈ 1: 1: 1 is predicted for astrophysical neutrinos measured at Earth due to neutrino oscillations. On top of this, the vτ offers a unique channel for neutrino astronomy due to absence of an atmospheric vτ background contribution. When a vτ interacts it produces a particle cascade and often a τ lepton which in turn decays mainly into another cascade. This results in a double cascade signature. An excellent angular resolution can be achieved when both cascade vertices are reconstructed. The KM3NeT/ARCA detector, which is under construction in the Mediterranean sea, will be able to detect this signature due to its timing and spatial resolution for cascades. We will discuss the dedicated reconstruction algorithm and performance for reconstructing double cascades using KM3NeT. The discovery of a high-energy cosmic neutrino flux has paved the way for the field of neutrino astronomy. For a large part of the flux, the sources remain unidentified. The KM3NeT detector, which is under construction in the Mediterranean sea, is designed to determine their origin. KM3NeT will instrument a cubic kilometre of seawater with photomultiplier tubes that detect Cherenkov radiation from neutrino interaction products with nanosecond precision. For single cascade event signatures, KM3NeT already showed that it can reach degree-level resolutions, greatly increasing the use of these neutrinos for astronomy. In this contribution, we further refine the cascade reconstruction by making a more detailed model of the neutrinos events and including additional information on the hit times. The arrival time of light can be used to improve the identification of double cascade signatures from tau neutrinos, and the angular resolution of both single and double cascade signatures. We present synthetic observations for the first generations of galaxies in the Universe and make predictions for future deep field observations for redshifts greater than 6. Due to the strong impact of nebular emission lines and the relatively compact scale of H ii regions, high resolution cosmological simulations and a robust suite of analysis tools are required to properly simulate spectra. We created a software pipeline consisting of FSPS, Hyperion, Cloudy and our own tools to generate synthetic IR observations from a fully three-dimensional arrangement of gas, dust, and stars. Our prescription allows us to include emission lines for a complete chemical network and tackle the effect of dust extinction and scattering in the various lines of sight. We provide spectra, 2-D binned photon imagery for both HST and JWST IR filters, luminosity relationships, and emission line strengths for a large sample of high redshift galaxies in the Renaissance Simulations. Our resulting synthetic spectra show high variability between galactic halos with a strong dependence on stellar mass, metallicity, gas mass fraction, and formation history. haloes with the lowest stellar mass have the greatest variability in [O iii]/Hβ, [O iii] and C iii] while haloes with higher masses are seen to show consistency in their spectra and [O iii] equivalent widths (EW) between 1Å and 10Å. Viewing angle accounted for three-fold difference in flux due to the presence of ionized gas channels in a halo. The optical data transport system of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea will provide each of the more than 6000 optical modules in the detector arrays with a point-to-point optical connection to the control stations onshore. The ARCA and ORCA detectors of KM3NeT are being installed at a depth of about 3500 m and 2500 m, respectively;their distance to the control stations is about 100 kilometers and 40 kilometers. The expected maximum data rate is 200 Mbps per optical module. The implemented optical data transport system matches the layouts of the networks of electro-optical cables and junction boxes in the deep sea. For efficient use of the fibres in the system the technology of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing is applied. The performance of the optical system in terms of measured bit error rates, optical budget and the next steps in the implementation of the system are presented. © 2022, CC BY.

Quantum criticality of spinons

The free fermion nature of interacting spins in one dimensional (1D) spin chains still lacks a rigorous study. In this letter we show that the length-1 spin strings significantly dominate critical properties of spinons, magnons and free fermions in the 1D antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain. Using the Bethe ansatz solution we analytically calculate exact scaling functions of thermal and magnetic properties of the model, providing a rigorous understanding of the quantum criticality of spinons. It turns out that the double peaks in specific heat elegantly mark two crossover temperatures fanning out from the critical point, indicating three quantum phases: the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), quantum critical and fully polarized ferromagnetic phases. For the TLL phase, the Wilson ratio RW = 4Ks remains almost temperature-independent, here Ks is the Luttinger parameter. Furthermore, applying our results we precisely determine the quantum scalings and critical exponents of all magnetic properties in the ideal 1D spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Cu(C4H4N2)(NO3)2 recently studied in Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 037202 (2015)]. We further find that the magnetization peak used in experiments is not a good quantity to map out the finite temperature TLL phase boundary.
