The Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) is a three-layered imaging survey aimed at addressing some of the most outstanding questions in astronomy today, including the nature of dark matter and dark energy. The survey has been awarded 300 nights of observing time at the Subaru Telescope and it started in March 2014. This paper presents the first public data release of HSC-SSP. This release includes data taken in the first 1.7 years of observations (61.5 nights) and each of the Wide, Deep, and UltraDeep layers covers about 108, 26, and 4 square degrees down to depths of i ∼ 26.4, ∼ 26.5, and ∼ 27.0 mag, respectively (5σ for point sources). All the layers are observed in five broad bands (grizy), and the Deep and UltraDeep layers are observed in narrow bands as well. We achieve an impressive image quality of 0.6 arcsec in the i-band in the Wide layer. We show that we achieve 1 − 2 per cent PSF photometry (rms) both internally and externally (against Pan-STARRS1), and ∼ 10 mas and 40 mas internal and external astrometric accuracy, respectively. Both the calibrated images and catalogs are made available to the community through dedicated user interfaces and database servers. In addition to the pipeline products, we also provide value-added products such as photometric redshifts and a collection of public spectroscopic redshifts. We present a calculation of the form factors of the D→Klν and D→πlν semileptonic decays at zero momentum transfer, ultimately for the purpose of determining the Cabibbo-Kobayashi- Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements |Vcs| and |Vcd |. This work uses MILC Nf = 2+1+1 configurations with the HISQ action for both sea quarks and valence quarks, including several physical mass ensembles and lattice spacings down to 0.042 fm. The calculation is done directly at q2 = 0 by employing twisted boundary conditions to tune the child particle momenta. Results at the physical point and in the continuum limit will be achieved in the final analysis through the use of Heavy-Meson Staggered cPT. Here we present our expected error budget and compare with the error of prior calculations. © Copyright owned by the author(s).

Multi-scale Simulation of Carbon Nanotubes Interactions with Cell Membrane: DFT Calculations and Molecular Dynamic Simulation

Due to unique physiochemical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), they are utilized in biomedicine applications including biomedical engineering, tissue engineering, drug delivery, gene therapy and biosensor engineering. Studies have been shown that carbon nanotube have a large propensity to interact with biomembranes; therefore, the toxicity of these nanomaterials and understanding the way CNTs interact with cell become more important. Recently, enormous efforts have been made to understand the molecular mechanism of CNTs and lipid bilayer interaction. Because of the relative large scale of lipid bilayer, quantum ab-initio methods are not common for such systems; consequently, both all atom and coarse grained molecular dynamic simulation (MD) are widely performed. For simulation of such system it is important to apply the correct physical and structural properties of carbon nanotube in the simulation, for instance with density functional theory (DFT) modeling it has been clear that, for open-ended CNTs not only is there unsaturated bonds at the end of tube, but also has a significant dipole moment which should not neglected and their quantity correspond to nanotube chirality and diameter. The aim of this work is to discuss the partial charges distribution along the carbon nanotubes and describe how they affect in CNTs -lipid bilayer interaction by free energy calculation. Our Simulation consist of two stage, first partial charges for pristine and functional carbon nanotube were determined by DFT calculation then results were applied to molecular dynamic force field. The DFT simulation computes partial charges quantity at the ends of nanotube and its results indicate that partial charges for functional nanotubes are higher than pristine nanotubes. The MD simulation determines that nanotubes interaction energy with biomembrane is highly strong, about 120 kcal/mol.

This paper deals with the large deflection of rigid-plastic structural members subjected to intense dynamic loads, such as explosive pressure and impact loadings. From the viewpoint of energy equilibrium, a theoretical procedure called the Membrane Factor Method was proposed by the authors in analyzing the dynamic plastic response of beams and plates with deflections in the range where both bending moments and membrane forces are of significance. The Membrane Factor Method is generalized and elaborated and its applications to various cases of dynamically loaded beams and plates are surveyed, with the expressions of the modifying membrane factors in each case being summarized and discussed. It is seen from comparison that the predictions by this method on the final deflections of beams and plates agree well with the corresponding experimental results for deflections up to 5-10 times of thickness. This procedure greatly improves the estimates from the bending-only theory and provides feasible complete response analyses, whose predictions are much more reliable than modal approximations. © 2014 WIT Press.

In the framework of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), parton distribution functions (PDFs) quantify how the momentum and spin of a hadron are divided among its quark and gluon constituents. Two main approaches exist to determine PDFs. The first approach, based on QCD factorization theorems, realizes a QCD analysis of a suitable set of hard-scattering measurements, often using a variety of hadronic observables. The second approach, based on first-principle operator definitions of PDFs, uses lattice QCD to compute directly some PDF-related quantities, such as their moments. Motivated by recent progress in both approaches, in this document we present an overview of lattice-QCD and globalanalysis techniques used to determine unpolarized and polarized proton PDFs and their moments. We provide benchmark numbers to validate present and future lattice-QCD calculations and we illustrate how they could be used to reduce the PDF uncertainties in current unpolarized and polarized global analyses. This document represents a first step towards establishing a common language between the two communities, to foster dialogue and to further improve our knowledge of PDFs. Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) is a wide-field imaging camera on the prime focus of the 8.2m Subaru telescope on the summit of Maunakea in Hawaii. A team of scientists from Japan, Taiwan and Princeton University is using HSC to carry out a 300-night multi-band imaging survey of the high-latitude sky. The survey includes three layers: the Wide layer will cover 1400 deg2 in five broad bands (grizy), with a 5 σ point-source depth of r ≈ 26. The Deep layer covers a total of 26 deg2 in four fields, going roughly a magnitude fainter, while the UltraDeep layer goes almost a magnitude fainter still in two pointings of HSC (a total of 3.5 deg2). Here we describe the instrument, the science goals of the survey, and the survey strategy and data processing. This paper serves as an introduction to a special issue of the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, which includes a large number of technical and scientific papers describing results from the early phases of this survey. We will present a atomic-continuum modeling framework based on unstructured mesh to study molecular solvation in aqueous salt solution, as well as nonequilibrium ionic flow in ion channel. Unstructured mesh allows employment of well-established finite element/boundary element methods and packages to achieve high computational speed, accuracy and expandability. We developed a robust molecular surface mesh generation software, TMSmesh, to handle complex and arbitrarily large biomolecular systems in PDB, which allows applying FEM/BEM to continuum molecular modeling for general biomolecular systems, especially for large-scale and complicate systems. With the surface mesh and our latest version of AFMPB combining a parallel adaptive new version fast multipole method and BEM, we can successfully compute the PB electrostatics of a virus molecule with more than one million atoms and with more than ten million triangles in the surface mesh. For nonlinear PB cases and more general non-equilibrium electro-diffusion processes described by the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations, we resort to a parallel adaptive finite element method, and the PB can be treated as a special case of PNP model. PNP modeling tracks particle diffusion and time information, and allows convenient incorporation of more physical effects such as size effects and ion-ion correlations in the model. Examples of non-equilibrium simulation will be given on the diffusion controlled substrate-enzyme encounter dynamics and on ionic flow through an ion channel. In addition, we also specifically designed a visualization system, VCMM, to facilitate continuum modeling based on unstructured mesh, which is not supported by usual visual systems in molecular modeling community. VCMM is a comprehensive system for visualizing and analyzing data from generic continuum molecular modeling.
