Low dose computed tomography (LDCT) is desirable for both diagnostic imaging and image guided interventions. Denoisers are openly used to improve the quality of LDCT. Deep learning (DL)-based denoisers have shown state-of-the-art performance and are becoming one of the mainstream methods. However, there exists two challenges regarding the DL-based denoisers: 1) a trained model typically does not generate different image candidates with different noise-resolution tradeoffs which sometimes are needed for different clinical tasks;2) the model generalizability might be an issue when the noise level in the testing images is different from that in the training dataset. To address these two challenges, in this work, we introduce a lightweight optimization process at the testing phase on top of any existing DL-based denoisers to generate multiple image candidates with different noise-resolution tradeoffs suitable for different clinical tasks in real-time. Consequently, our method allows the users to interact with the denoiser to efficiently review various image candidates and quickly pick up the desired one, and thereby was termed as deep interactive denoiser (DID). Experimental results demonstrated that DID can deliver multiple image candidates with different noise-resolution tradeoffs, and shows great generalizability regarding various network architectures, as well as training and testing datasets with various noise levels. © 2020, CC BY-NC-SA.

In this paper, the global strong axisymmetric solutions for the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system are established in the exterior of a cylinder subject to the Dirichlet boundary conditions. Moreover, the vacuum is allowed in these solutions. One of the key ingredients of the analysis is to obtain the L2(s, T;L∞(Ω)) bound for the velocity field, where the axisymmetry of the solutions plays an important role. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Wireless radio transmission from a satellite-based emitter to a receiver located on an aircraft is of interest for many applications such as internet access for passengers, air traffic management or positioning by global navigation satellite systems especially when a worldwide service shall be granted. In particular, the last two mentioned applications are related to the safety of life requiring realistic and accurate channel models for software-based system testing. State-of-the-art channel models for the satellite-to-aircraft case lack of accuracy in terms of modelling all propagation impairments. In this contribution, the authors describe airborne propagation experiments using Global Positioning System signals for channel sounding, the data evaluation and the derived channel model. © 2019 The Institution of engineering and Technology.

Self-driving labs (SDLs) combine fully automated experiments with artificial intelligence (AI) that decides the next set of experiments. Taken to their ultimate expression, SDLs could usher a new paradigm of scientific research, where the world is probed, interpreted, and explained by machines for human benefit. While there are functioning SDLs in the fields of chemistry and materials science, we contend that synthetic biology provides a unique opportunity since the genome provides a single target for affecting the incredibly wide repertoire of biological cell behavior. However, the level of investment required for the creation of biological SDLs is only warranted if directed towards solving difficult and enabling biological questions. In this paper we are concerned with plane wave discontinuous Galerkin (PWDG) methods for Helmholtz equation and time-harmonic Maxwell equations in three-dimensional anisotropic media, for which the coefficients of the equations are matrices instead of numbers. We first define novel plane wave basis functions based on rigorous choices of scaling transformations and coordinate transformations. Then we derive the error estimates of the resulting approximate solutions with respect to the condition number of the coefficient matrices, under a new assumption on the shape regularity of polyhedral meshes. Numerical results verify the validity of the theoretical results, and indicate that the approximate solutions generated by the proposed PWDG method possess high accuracies.65N30, 65N55 Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Four-dimensional gauge theories based on symplectic Lie groups provide elegant realisations of the microscopic origin of several new physics models. Numerical studies pursued on the lattice provide quantitative information necessary for phenomenological applications. To this purpose, we implemented Sp(2N) gauge theories using Monte Carlo techniques within Grid, a performant framework designed for the numerical study of quantum field theories on the lattice. We show the first results obtained using this library, focusing on the case-study provided by the Sp(4) theory coupled to Nas = 4 Wilson-Dirac fermions transforming in the 2-index antisymmetric representation. In particular, we discuss preliminary tests of the algorithm and we test some of its main functionalities. © 2023, CC BY.

The smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique is a purely Lagrangian method, used in numerical simulations of fluids in astrophysics and computational fluid dynamics, among many other fields. SPH simulations with detailed physics represent computationally-demanding calculations. The parallelization of SPH codes is not trivial due to the absence of a structured grid. Additionally, the performance of the SPH codes can be, in general, adversely impacted by several factors, such as multiple time-stepping, long-range interactions, and/or boundary conditions. This work presents insights into the current performance and functionalities of three SPH codes: SPHYNX, ChaNGa, and SPH-flow. These codes are the starting point of an interdisciplinary co-design project, SPH-EXA, for the development of an Exascale-ready SPH mini-app. To gain such insights, a rotating square patch test was implemented as a common test simulation for the three SPH codes and analyzed on two modern HPC systems. Furthermore, to stress the differences with the codes stemming from the astrophysics community (SPHYNX and ChaNGa), an additional test case, the Evrard collapse, has also been carried out. This work extrapolates the common basic SPH features in the three codes for the purpose of consolidating them into a pure-SPH, Exascale-ready, optimized, mini-app. Moreover, the outcome of this serves as direct feedback to the parent codes, to improve their performance and overall scalability. © 2018 IEEE.

Efficient adaptive exponential time integrators for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with nonlocal potential

The performance of exponential-based numerical integrators for the time propagation of the equations associated with the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree–Fock (MCTDHF) method for the approximation of the multi-particle Schrödinger equation in one space dimension is assessed. Among the most popular integrators such as Runge–Kutta methods, time-splitting, exponential integrators and Lawson methods, exponential Lawson multistep methods with one predictor–corrector step provide the best stability and accuracy at the least effort. This assessment is based on the observation that the evaluation of the nonlocal terms associated with the potential is the computationally most demanding part of such a calculation in our setting. In addition, the predictor step provides an estimator for the local time-stepping error, thus allowing for adaptive time-stepping which reflects the smoothness of the solution and enables to reliably control the accuracy of a computation in a robust way, without the need to guess an optimal stepsize a priori. One-dimensional model examples are studied to compare different time integrators and demonstrate the successful application of our adaptive methods. © 2021 The Author(s)
