Aggregated Relative Similarity (ARS): a novel similarity measure for improved personalised learning recommendation using hybrid filtering approach

To improve the effectiveness of online learning, the learning materials recommendation is required to be personalised to the learner material recommendations must be personalized to learners. The existing approaches are ineffective in recommending learning materials according to the learner’s learning situation, the learner’s internal learning characteristics, and fitting to the learner’s preferences and learning suitability. In this work, we propose a hybrid recommendation approach cthat combines the advantages of knowledge-based and collaborative filtering approaches. The knowledge-based filtering approach enables us to find the most suitable learning materials that fit the learner’s situation and learning state by appropriately mapping the learners’ contexts with the metadata of the learning materials. We use collaborative filtering to refine learning material selection by considering learner-learner similarity. We propose a novel similarity measure, aggregated relative similarity (ARS), to determine similar learners based on implicit learner characteristics such as education, knowledge, cognitive ability, and learning style. The experimental results show that the proposed ARS algorithm outperforms popular similarity measures such as Jaccard similarity, Sorensen-Dice coefficient, and overlap coefficient. The overall recommendation performance of the proposed hybrid approach attained mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.681 and 0.9198, respectively. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

A complicated neuro-developmental disorder called Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is abnormal activities related to brain development. ASD generally affects the physical impression of the face as well as the growth of the brain in children. An early and proper medical diagnosis is essential for ASD affected children to enhance their quality of life. However, the clinical detection of ASD is a difficult task and time-consuming, hence it is essential to design an ASD detection approach for precise diagnosis of ASD children. In this research, an algorithmic approach called Fractional Tasmanian Rat Swarm Optimization driven SqueezeNet (FTRSO-SqueezeNet) is designed for the detection of ASD. The median filter and Region of Interest (RoI) extraction are used to de-noise the input image initially and extract a particular region from the filtered image. Later, the nub regions are extracted by choosing the optimal grid from the pre-processed image and using different feature extractors the features from the input images are determined. Finally, the detection of ASD is done by using SqueezeNet, which is trained using the FTRSO approach. The performance of the method is estimated, where the designed model achieved higher performance with an accuracy of 94.55%, sensitivity of 92.53%, and specificity of 95.22% than other prevailing approaches. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

FLBC-IDS: a federated learning and blockchain-based intrusion detection system for secure IoT environments

The development of the Internet of Things (IoT) in multiple sectors has led to substantial security issues due to its decentralized structure and resource limits. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a novel technique called FLBC-IDS, which combines Horizontal Federated Learning (HFL), Hyperledger Blockchain, and EfficientNet to detect intrusions in IoT environments. The FLBC-IDS model uses HFL to enable secure and privacy-preserving model training across numerous IoT devices, resulting in decentralized data privacy and resource efficiency. The model's integration of Hyperledger Blockchain ensures tamper-resistant and transparent recording of model updates and agreements among participating IoT nodes, protecting the system's integrity. Furthermore, EfficientNet improves the model's robustness by effectively obtaining and categorizing features from network traffic data. On the CICIDS-2018 and CICIoT-2023 datasets, the FLBC-IDS model outperforms previous techniques in terms of accuracy, recall, F1-score, and precision. The FLBC-IDS model has an accuracy of 98.89%, recall of 98.044%, F1-score of 98.29%, and precision of 98.44%. The article analyzes the suggested model's merits and limitations, as well as future research directions for real-world deployment of IoT security solutions. Overall, the FLBC-IDS paradigm holds significant promise for improving IoT security and safeguarding IoT settings from infiltration attempts and cyber threats. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

This paper presents an efficient prediction model for a good learning environment using Random Forest(RF)*** consists of a series of modules;data preprocessing,data normalization,data split andfinally classification or prediction by the RF *** preprocessed data is normalized using minmax normalization often used before *** the input data or variables are measured at different scales,it is necessary to normalize them to contribute equally to the ***,the RF classifier is employed for course selection which is an ensemble learning method and k-fold cross-validation(k=10)is used to validate the *** proposed Prediction Model for Course Selection(PMCS)system is considered a multi-class problem that predicts the course for a particular learner with three complexity levels,namely low,medium and *** is operated under two modes;locally and *** former considers the gender of the learner and the later does not consider the gender of the *** database comprises the learner opinions from 75 males and 75 females per category(low,medium and high).Thus the system uses a total of 450 samples to evaluate the performance of the PMCS *** show that the system’s performance,while using locally i.e.,gender-wise has slightly higher performance than the global *** RF classifier with 75 decision trees in the global system provides an average accuracy of 97.6%,whereas in the local system it is 97%(male)and 97.6%(female).The overall performance of the RF classifier with 75 trees is better than 25,50 and 100 decision trees in both local and global systems.

Solar flares are one of the strongest outbursts of solar activity,posing a serious threat to Earth’s critical infrastructure,such as communications,navigation,power,and ***,it is essential to accurately predict solar flares in order to ensure the safety of human ***,the research focuses on two directions:first,identifying predictors with more physical information and higher prediction accuracy,and second,building flare prediction models that can effectively handle complex observational *** terms of flare observability and predictability,this paper analyses multiple dimensions of solar flare observability and evaluates the potential of observational parameters in *** flare prediction models,the paper focuses on data-driven models and physical models,with an emphasis on the advantages of deep learning techniques in dealing with complex and high-dimensional *** reviewing existing traditional machine learning,deep learning,and fusion methods,the key roles of these techniques in improving prediction accuracy and efficiency are *** prevailing challenges,this study discusses the main challenges currently faced in solar flare prediction,such as the complexity of flare samples,the multimodality of observational data,and the interpretability of *** conclusion summarizes these findings and proposes future research directions and potential technology advancement.

Spatial attention-based hybrid VGG-SVM and VGG-RF frameworks for improved cotton leaf disease detection

The agriculture industry's production and food quality have been impacted by plant leaf diseases in recent years. Hence, it is vital to have a system that can automatically identify and diagnose diseases at an initial stage for enhancing the quality of agricultural output and also for stopping the overall plant extinction. Most state-of-the-art methods do not provide appropriate accuracy of identification when the similarity among different diseases is higher and the input leaf images have complex background. In this work, a transfer learning-based automated crop disease recognition system is proposed to handle this problem. The cotton leaf disease detection framework being proposed here includes two key stages: (1) the feature extraction stage, where the convolutional neural network (CNN) model from the visual geometry group (VGG-16) is employed to obtain the deep features from cotton leaf images with complex background. (2) Cotton leaf disease detection stage: Here, the extracted optimal features are input to the machine learning classifiers, namely random forest (RF) and nonlinear support vector machine (SVM), for the initial classification of the diseases. For providing an optimal cotton crop disease detection performance, Kaggle’s four-class cotton disease dataset with complex background is chosen in this work. For the final decision making and analysis, two hybrid models named spatial attention-based hybrid VGG-RF and hybrid VGG-SVM have been proposed in this work for enhancing the decision accuracy. These hybrid models offered an average accuracy of approximately 98.29% and 99.31%, respectively, which is higher than the accuracy provided by the related work. This proved that the proposed hybrid model, namely spatial attention-based VGG-SVM and VGG-RF models, with spatial attention outperformed the state-of-the-art classifiers. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Data Augmentation for Medical Image Classification Based on Gaussian Laplacian Pyramid Blending With a Similarity Measure

Breast cancer is a devastating disease that affects women worldwide, and computer-aided algorithms have shown potential in automating cancer diagnosis. Recently Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) opens new possibilities for addressing the challenges of labeled data scarcity and accurate prediction in critical applications. However, a lack of diversity, as well as unrealistic and unreliable data, have a detrimental impact on performance. Therefore, this study proposes an augmentation scheme to address the scarcity of labeled data and data imbalance in medical datasets. This approach integrates the concepts of the Gaussian-Laplacian pyramid and pyramid blending with similarity measures. In order to maintain the structural properties of images and capture inter-variability of patient images of the same category similarity-metric-based intermixing has been introduced. It helps to maintain the overall quality and integrity of the dataset. Subsequently, deep learning approach with significant modification, that leverages transfer learning through the usage of concatenated pre-trained models is applied to classify breast cancer histopathological images. The effectiveness of the proposal, including the impact of data augmentation, is demonstrated through a detailed analysis of three different medical datasets, showing significant performance improvement over baseline models. The proposal has the potential to contribute to the development of more accurate and reliable approach for breast cancer diagnosis. © 2013 IEEE.

EPDTNet + -EM: Advanced Transfer Learning and SubNet Architecture for Medical Image Diagnosis

This paper presents a novel medical imaging framework, Efficient Parallel Deep Transfer SubNet+-based Explainable Model (EPDTNet + -EM), designed to improve the detection and classification of abnormalities in medical images. The model integrates Enhanced Exponential Transfer Learning (En-ETL) and the Parallel SubNet (PSNet +) architecture, addressing challenges like overfitting, high computational cost, and limited generalization across complex datasets. En-ETL accelerates learning and enhances precision, while PSNet + balances computational efficiency and performance through parallel convolutional layers and an axis attention mechanism. The proposed framework preprocesses medical images using resizing, noise removal, and contrast enhancement, ensuring high-quality inputs for analysis. For classification, the PSNet + model categorizes medical images into normal and abnormal cases. Explainable AI (XAI) is applied to highlight key features in classified images, improving interpretability and clinical decision-making. Experimental results validate the framework on various datasets, including MRI, CT, X-ray, and mammography images. The proposed model achieves a classification accuracy of 98.83%, a false positive rate of 2%, and an execution time of 5.3 ms. Comparative Analysis show superior performance over existing approaches in classification accuracy and efficiency. Ablation studies confirmed the significant contributions of the proposed model using each component in enhancing performance. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Ransomware is one of the most advanced malware which uses high computer resources and services to encrypt system data once it infects a system and causes large financial data losses to the organization and individuals. There are certain automatic ransomware detection and analysis strategies available nowadays. File system analysis reveals some essential patterns and artifacts that can be very useful to understand its behavior spreading mechanism, taxonomy for malware forensics experts. Current trend explores Ransomware as a service (RaaS) and Malware as a service (MaaS) on Darknet. This paper reveals a theory of digital forensic methodology to identify the spreading/infection mechanism and attack path, the cryptographic methodology, windows services, process, APIs, persistence mechanism, and system lockdown strategies and malware analysis methodology.
