Artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, cybersecurity, the Industrial Internet of Things, and blockchain are some of the technologies and solutions that are combined to produce "smart manufacturing,"which is used to optimize manufacturing processes by creating and/or accepting data. In manufacturing, spark erosion technique such as wire electric discharge machining (WEDM) is a process that machines different hard-to-cut alloys. It is regarded as the solution for cutting intricate parts and materials that are resistant to conventional machining techniques or are required by design. In the present study, holes of different radii, i.e. 1, 3, and 5 mm, have been cut on Nickelvac-HX. Tapering in WEDM is a delicate process to avoid disadvantages such as wire break, wire bend, wire friction, guide wear, and insufficient flushing. Taper angles viz. 0°, 15°, and 30° were obtained from a unique fixture to get holes at different angles. The study also shows the influence of taper angles on the part geometry and area of the holes. Next, the artificial neural network (ANN) technique is implemented for the parametric result prediction. The findings were in good agreement with the experimental data, supporting the viability of the ANN approach for the evaluation of the manufacturing process. The findings in this research provide as a reference to the potential of AI-based assessment in smart manufacturing processes and as a design tool in many manufacturing-related fields. © 2023 the author(s), published by De Gruyter.

Visible light positioning (VLP) is a promising positioning technique, which, however, typically requires multiple luminaires to achieve accurate positioning. This paper proposes a novel visual odometry (VO) assisted visible light positioning algorithm (VO-VLP) in achieving positioning with only a single luminaire. In the considered model, a user equipped with a camera jointly uses geometric features in the captured images and coordinates information obtained via visible light communication (VLC) for positioning. The proposed VLP algorithm does not rely on any extra inertial measurement unit and relaxes the tilted angle limitation at the user. In particular, VO-VLP first uses the circle feature of a luminaire to obtain dual normal vectors of the luminaire. Then, the basic principle of VO is used to eliminate the wrong normal vector by exploiting the geometric features in two consecutive images captured when the user moves. Finally, the pose and location of the user are obtained by using an artificially marked point on the luminaire's contour. VO-VLP can achieve accurate positioning with only a single luminaire and a camera. Simulation results show that the proposed indoor positioning algorithm can achieve a 97th-percentile positioning accuracy of around 10 cm.

Artificial intelligence holds great promise in medical imaging, especially histopathological imaging. However, artificial intelligence algorithms cannot fully explain the thought processes during decision-making. This situation has brought the problem of explainability, i.e., the black box problem, of artificial intelligence applications to the agenda: an algorithm simply responds without stating the reasons for the given images. To overcome the problem and improve the explainability, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) has come to the fore, and piqued the interest of many researchers. Against this backdrop, this study examines a new and original dataset using the deep learning algorithm, and visualizes the output with gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM), one of the XAI applications. Afterwards, a detailed questionnaire survey was conducted with the pathologists on these images. Both the decision-making processes and the explanations were verified, and the accuracy of the output was tested. Aiming at the high frequency of urban traffic accidents and the relative shortage of police resources, a multi-objective discrete Jaya algorithm is proposed to solve the problem of police resource deployment in emergency traffic accident handling. The purpose is to make timely response and handling of traffic accidents through the rational allocation of police deployment points in the jurisdiction. Taking the coverage of accident points and the average response time of accidents as the optimization objectives, the discrete Jaya algorithm is used as the global search strategy to approach the Pareto front by constantly approaching the optimal solution and far away from the worst solution, and then the neighborhood search strategy is used to improve the local search ability of the algorithm. Finally, a practical example is given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper describes a dataset collected by infrared thermography, a non-contact, non-intrusive technique to acquire data and analyze the built environment in various aspects. While most studies focus on the city and building scales, an observatory installed on a rooftop provides high temporal and spatial resolution observations with dynamic interactions on the district scale. The rooftop infrared thermography observatory with a multi-modal platform capable of assessing a wide range of dynamic processes in urban systems was deployed in Singapore. It was placed on the top of two buildings that overlook the outdoor context of the National university of Singapore campus. The platform collects remote sensing data from tropical areas on a temporal scale, allowing users to determine the temperature trend of individual features such as buildings, roads, and vegetation. The dataset includes 1,365,921 thermal images collected on average at approximately 10-second intervals from two locations during ten months. © 2023, CC BY-SA.

Human activity recognition (HAR) as an emerging technology can have undeniable impacts on several applications such as health monitoring, context-aware systems, transportation, robotics, and smart cities. Among the main research methods in HAR (sensor, image, and WiFi-based), the WiFi-based method has attracted considerable attention due to the ubiquity of WiFi devices. WiFi devices can be utilized to distinguish daily activities such as "walk", "run", and "sleep". These activities affect WiFi signal propagation and can be further used to recognize activities. This paper proposes a Deep Learning method for HAR tasks using channel state information (CSI). A new model is developed in which CSI data are converted to grayscale images. These images are then fed into a 2D-Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for activity classification. We take advantage of CNN's high accuracy on image classification along with WiFi-based ubiquity. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach achieves acceptable performance in HAR tasks. © 2021 IEEE.

Traditional cryptographic frameworks are seriously threatened by the quick development of quantum computing, especially those that depend on public-key cryptosystems like RSA and ECC. Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) seeks to create cryptographic methods that are impervious to quantum computer assaults in order to overcome this difficulty. The National institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which has selected and standardised quantum-resistant techniques like CRYSTALS-Kyber for key encapsulation and CRYSTALS-Dilithium for digital signatures, has sparked recent advancements in PQC. At the same time, the need for reliable PQC solutions has increased due to developments in quantum computing, such as IBM's improvements in qubit stability and Google's “quantum supremacy” assertion. In order to protect data security in the post-quantum age, PQC regulations must be adopted globally, as highlighted by the intersection of these fields. Current developments in PQC standardisation and the changing state of quantum computing technology are highlighted in this paper.

DNN-based video object detection (VOD) powers autonomous driving and video surveillance industries with rising importance and promising opportunities. However, adversarial patch attack yields huge concern in live vision tasks because of its practicality, feasibility, and powerful attack effectiveness. This work proposes Themis, a software/hardware system to defend against adversarial patches for real-time robust video object detection. We observe that adversarial patches exhibit extremely localized superficial feature importance in a small region with non-robust predictions, and thus propose the adversarial region detection algorithm for adversarial effect elimination. Themis also proposes a systematic design to efficiently support the algorithm by eliminating redundant computations and memory traffics. Experimental results show that the proposed methodology can effectively recover the system from the adversarial attack with negligible hardware overhead. © 2022, CC BY.

There is no doubt about the urgency of ensuring trust in e-voting systems since elections without trust cannot be acceptable in a democratic society. To solve this problem, it was proposed to use blockchain technology, however, in voting systems this leads to significant delays in the execution of transactions, and the software solution is accessible only to a narrow circle of specialists, which clearly does not help to show confidence on the part of voters. This paper proposes a different approach, which is based on the widely available verification of all means and processes that may cause distrust in the accuracy of the vote count or in ensuring their confidentiality. We offer a solution to the problem of transparency of all hardware and software that cause distrust. Voting systems that use this approach are implemented in three leading Ukrainian universities for student elections to self-government bodies. The conceptual model of the e-voting system for state elections on the example of Ukraine is presented. Links to Internet resources are provided where you can not only get acquainted with the principles of building the system, but also conduct an experimental vote in Ukrainian, English or Russian.
