Ensuring the safety of human workers collaborating with industrial robots is paramount. This research work presents a novel approach by developing a safety-related intruder detection system for the operational zones of industrial robots, following the IEC 61508 standard and adopting the related redundant architecture. The hardware integrates light curtains and radar sensors in a dual-layer configuration, while the software utilizes a safety system-on-chip to implement real-time diagnostics and fault tolerance. Protecting employees and ensuring a smooth and safe work environment are significant concerns for all companies. As a result, numerous standards and regulations have been established to provide safe collaboration between humans and machines. However, despite these measures, accidents continue to occur, resulting in varying degrees of injuries. The proposed system is depicted through a comprehensive schematic, emphasizing the integration of safety measures within the robotic environment. The detailed prototype demonstrates practical application, show-casing the system's ability to detect intrusions, initiate emergency responses, and transition to fail-safe states during component failures. This research work advances safety protocols in human-robot collaboration within industrial settings, fostering a safe working environment through a well-defined safety framework. © 2025 IEEE.

For decades, speed sensors based on the spatial frequency filter method have successfully proven themselves in a wide range of applications. This makes the sensor concept particularly suitable for the area of functional safety. New filter variants extend the previous measuring range to very low speeds up to standstill detection. By combining the sensor with a safety system on chip for recording and analysing measured values, a functionally safe measuring chain can be established. In order to demonstrate the variability and performance of the new filters, an optical application-specific integrated circuit was designed, which forms the basis for further extensive tests. The core components are a large number of freely configurable photodiode channels, which were realised via a redundant structure, as well as two different transimpedance amplifier concepts. In the further course of the project, the ASIC will be analysed with regard to its desired performance parameters and its robustness.

The use of complex electronic systems in medical technology applications is constantly increasing. These systems are becoming increasingly important, particularly in the area of analyzing the progress of treatment, as they can be used to identify any deficits that may still exist. This paper presents an approach to a real-time optimization of safety parameters in wireless communication systems. When considering the GEC–model (Generalized Erasure Channel) and the black channel design of a communication channel, then the PFH (Probability of Failure per Hour) value can be estimated using the parameters ε – BER (bit-error-rate), φ – BLR (bit-loss-rate), v – number of safety related messages per second, n – message length and d_min – minimum distance of a linear code. The number of safety related messages per second v and the message length n, including the information block k and the checksum block r, can be varying between the permissible bounds. Accordingly, the variable parameters can be adjusted at run-time with additional assimilation of the used cyclic code. It allows the real-time prediction and optimization of the safety parameters. In this paper, the concept of the parameter estimation is discussed and based on it the optimization problem is defined. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Recent advancements in the embedded systems field have resulted in more complicated systems with application-specific blocks (IP cores), often known as system on Chip (SoC) devices. Several redundancy-based embedded designs provide reliability and safety for SoC in aeronautics, automotive, industrial automation, railway, and space. In this paper, a Safety system-on-Chip heterogenous1oo2 architecture is presented. The design is based on two open-source and proven in-use cores, LEON3 from Cobham Gaisler and RISCV processors SweRV EH1 from Western Digital. The SoC is implemented on a Xilinx FPGA system and supplemented with conventional peripherals from the Xilinx IP library and Cobham Gaisler. A software comparator is included for a diagnostic. Each core has independent IPs, and the software comparator evaluates data from both cores;in case of deviation, the system is rendered to an energized safe state. © MCCSIS *** rights reserved.

In this paper, a Safety system-on-Chip based on the open-source RISC-V processor SweRV EH1 from Western Digital is presented. A hardware comparator concept is followed. The SSoC is implemented on a Xilinx FPGA system and extended with standard peripherals from the Xilinx IP library and from Cobham Gaisler, so that the overall system has an Ethernet interface in addition to GPIO and UART. The goal is to create a complete redundancy approach with a hardware fault tolerance of nearly 1 from input to output based on the freely available RISC-V instruction set and prove its feasibility. © 2022 The authors and IOS Press.

This paper presents a simulation environment, which is a C++/systemC based integrated framework for functional verification of designed components or electronic architectures and enhances the existing computer architecture simulation tool named sefca. As the VHDL sources are converted to systemC it is sufficient for verification engineers to have a fundamental knowledge of C++ and the systemC library. The testbench framework uses the same graphical user interface (GUI) based on the wxPython library, which was presented in the sefca tool. Verification of the design is supported by the systemC verification library (SCV). Inter-Process-Communication is used to send the stimuli for simulation input from the GUI to the simulation process and the simulation results back to the online viewer in the GUI. With these enhancements sefca becomes a universal tool for testing the software and the hardware part of a new design at the same time. Working on the transaction level model (TLM) the proposed methodology offers a high performance and a high level of abstraction. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper describes the implementation and integration process of a complete communication computer system on the field programmable gate array (FPGA). After such a design is reached, safety measures are integrated to achieve a safety-related architecture. For this purpose a diagnostic unit will be implemented, consisting of hardware and software tests. Hardware tests are related to the control of the FPGA functionality. They are based on the integration of two existing methods to reach complete hardware test coverage. The software tests are used for a continuous testing of the whole system (this means testing the central processing unit, bus systems, peripherals and memory). Furthermore, a safety multiplexer is integrated with the task to turn off the current operating system (main system) and to turn on a redundant system when a failure is introduced via the diagnostic unit. The safety multiplexer has to give the permission to the redundant system to receive the outputs from the main system in a way that is free from faults. The microcontroller ColdFire is used as a basis, which provides numerous features for the control of various peripherals as well as the connection of various types of memory. © 2014 IEEE.
