Optical speed sensors based on the spatial frequency filter method are a proven technology that offer high measurement accuracy over a wide speed range. Newly developed variants also enable measurements at very low speeds and increase the robustness of the method [1]. This makes the sensor very suitable for use in the area of functional safety. A measurement chain up to safety integrity level 3 (SIL3) should be feasible via a combination with a safety system on a chip (SoC) for evaluating the measurement data and an extension of the sensor module to include safety-related elements [2], [3]. By integrating the sensor at IC level, a compact overall solution is to be made possible. After the first successful tests with the safety SoC, further examinations of the measuring method with regard to functional safety are now necessary.

Nowadays, many major efforts and interests are focused on providing better services for some elders and patients who have to live alone, while they are exposed to different dangers during their daily life activities such as falling. The necessity to reduce the negative consequences of falling, whether related to physical or psychological health or to financial encumbrances, by providing an immediate help and a continuous remote monitoring, drives a corresponding meaning to develop a reasonable safety-related monitoring and detecting system of the human motion with respect to the privacy and the simplicity. In this paper, a conceptual prototype of safety-related platform for monitoring human activities by mean of limited number of acceleration and rotation sensors is presented. Additionally, the proposed approach that adopts the artificial neural networks to overcome the challenges emerged by reducing the number of motion sensors and to compensate the missing data is also introduced. Moreover, the required procedures for collecting training and testing data are also summarized in the last section.

This paper introduces a novel and comprehensive approach for estimating the reliability of safety critical software components in autonomous vehicle motion systems. The proposed approach in this paper presents a combination software reliability model (CSRM) that integrates multiple non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) software reliability growth models (SRGMs) to achieve a reasonable compromise between accuracy, the trade-off between the goodness of fit and the simplicity, and stability. By using machine learning techniques, the CSRM effectively combines the strengths of individual SRGMs while mitigating their weaknesses through suitable evaluation and calibration techniques. The developed CSRM has been successfully applied and validated to facilitate a smoother and more efficient evaluation of reliability targets for software components in autonomous robotic wheelchair (ARW). Based on the validation results, the new CSRM has significantly enhanced the efficiency of the process for evaluating whether the defined reliability goals were being achieved. Furthermore, has facilitated a more accurate assessment of the need for further test executions and better planning of the required verification and validation session. This new approach provides valuable insights into the reliability of the developed software, particularly for software developers lacking extensive experience in identifying and applying appropriate SGRM.

The authors present their latest research results and developments of a code generator for Matlab/Simulink block diagrams and to download the generated code onto safety related systems such as a safety PLC (programmable logic controller). An example demonstrates the different stages for code generation, evaluation and conversion before such code can be used in process industries. systematic approaches are necessary when such source code is embedded in process units. To the best knowledge of the authors, Matlab/Simulink source code has not been transferred on safety PLC before. Matlab/Simulink is an advanced and matured programming environment, especially for simulations of engineering processes and systems. Hardly no hardware exists, when it comes to download the developed algorithms and to use it in real world applications and so far this approach is the only one for using developed and tested Matlab/Simulink software on an safety related system.

We present novel concepts, technologies and potentials of optical data communication, especially for future computer architectures. The WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) and the optical wiring technologies are explained in detail. Experimental results of tunable optical filters, which play a major role in WDM systems, are reported. New concepts for novel optical interconnectors and novel miniaturized lasers for direct generation of green light are proposed as examples for possible next generation components to improve the performance of optical communication based computer architecture.

Network security has been a major issue long time ago. Confidentiality, integrity and availability of data are the primary concerns of any network administrator. Recently, several attacks have resulted in huge losses of resources and of data availability. For example, in May 2017, medical entities in the United Kingdom have been paralyzed due to WannaCry ransomware world-wide cyber-attack. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to propose a more secured network architecture that will be designed for the case of the PACS - Picture Archiving and Communication system - that is used for storing and transmitting radiography images and reports through the hospital internal network. This paper presents an off-the-shelf solution based on the concept of one-way link data diode and open source softwares to assure safety and security in a cost effective manner. The novelty of this approach is in the design of a data diode that limits the physical connection to two network interfaces, and eliminates the need for a third network connection needed to provide a carrier signal for the transmitter. This system has shown some latency in data transfer but has increased the safety and the security of files transferred between the PACS network and the external network.

In this paper a complete safety controller on a single chip is presented. HICore 1 is a comprehensive solution that includes a certified application specific integrated circuit for safety-critical applications according to the safety standard IEC 61508, meeting the safety integrity level SIL3. It also meets the requirements of the standard EN 13849 Performance Level e. A SIL3 operating system and a SIL3 middleware complement the presented safety chip solution. Based on the presented solution, the smallest certified safety controller represents an innovative product and allows system manufacturers to create safe solutions ready for certification.

Road accidents have been known to be one of the leading death causes around the world for a long time. Thus, cars and all kinds of road vehicles form a huge source of danger, and they relate to multiple high risks. There are many factors that can contribute to road traffic accidents such as the health condition of the driver if a medical emergency event happened while driving, drowsiness, or mind-wandering. The proposed system can monitor the behavior of the driver while driving as well as his/her health status. Moreover, it analyzes the monitored data, alerts the driver in a timely manner, and assists him/her in adjusting the driving behavior. Different dangerous and risky situations which can be faced during driving can be captured and avoided by using such a system which leads at the end to increase road traffic safety and reduce vehicle collisions. Notifications are developed in cases of drowsiness, loss of focus, or other concerns that may emerge while driving. However, when the driver's ability to operate the vehicle safely is hampered by a health concern, the implemented system is only able at this stage to alarm the driver itself and the surrounding cars as a first level of alarms.

OPC is a matured and accepted standard in industries, but hardly used in industrial applications developed at universities, especially in Europe. Publications in this area, either using OPC-communication or developing applications have been hardly increased over the past several years. This paper reports the current state of the standard, but also describes current problems and how they can be managed and overcome. The authors also give an overview of the recently published new standard, which is called: OPC unified approach. After the fundamentals are described in this paper, the authors present their experiences with OPC to combine it with methods and procedures to develop a modern maintenance system. It also reports current developments at the Department of computer architecture and system programming at the university of kassel.
