Due to the continuing development of semiconductor structures, it can be allowed nowadays to integrate faster and more efficient systems into a very small area of silicon. In such system-on-chip, all individual components of a target control system can be integrated into a single silicon die at lowest level, which in turn contributes in saving the substantial space and reduces power consumption and production costs. With the consideration of the miniaturization of safety-related systems into system-on-chips, where usually complete redundant architectures along with memories and interfaces are integrated into small silicon structures, many advantages can be taken into account. These advantages extend to all levels of the development cycle. In the present paper, a concept for on-chip safety system architecture is presented briefly. Primarily, a qualitative evaluation and analysis of the presented architecture is explicitly focused and discussed. The evaluation and analysis is based on a comparison to a similar conventional discrete safety-related architecture.

Although the traditional task of communication protocols is the transmission of data, this is actually not completely sufficient if it is used in safety sectors. Therefore, it must be enhanced. In order to detect and overcome failures in systems, risk analysis and failure measurement must be taken into account in each safety-related system. This paper describes the advantages of having a safety-related system-on-chip with on-chip diagnostics in order to develop a safe transmission protocol. Here the concept of a CANopen Safety protocol stack on top of a safety-related system-on-chip that yields reliability to the complete product is presented.

In this paper, a concept for a SIL3 middleware implementing safety-related aspects is proposed. The middleware is intended to be used by applications that are written for a recently developed safety system-on-chip. Each module implements a low-level driver. Each driver represents a specific functionality of the system-on-chip. Once being certified conforming to IEC 61508, the middleware would enable writing safety-related applications aimed at SIL3 almost as straightforward as non-safety-related applications. A multi-core SIL3 architecture for safety-related applications is explained. In addition, possible issues that can arise during the software development are identified. Furthermore, conformance arguments on meeting SIL3 are depicted.

With the release of the second edition of the standard IEC 61508 for functional safety of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic systems, a set of methodologies and implementation techniques was presented, which allows the realization and certification of safety-related solutions with on-chip redundancy. In a broader context, the standard ISO 26262 offers similar methodologies for safety solutions for automotive applications. The main focus of the research work of our institute is laid on the development and certification of safety-chips according to the standard IEC 61508. Together with an industrial partner, we are developing chip-based safety-related solutions for several industrial applications. In the same context, several semiconductor manufacturers addressed the development of such solutions in the last years, mainly with the focus on automotive applications. The present paper provides an overview of existing and planned safety chip architectures. Furthermore, a cursory analysis of the presented safety-chips is carried out with respect to the standard IEC 61508. A deep qualitative and quantitative analysis require experiments and simulations which will be carried out in future work.

Since the advent of traditional random access memory (RAM) tests, such as Checkerboard, more sophisticated tests and fault models have evolved, taking the characteristics of memories into account. Thus, given a specific type of memory, it would be straightforward to determine suitable state-of-the-art tests. However, the question our research focuses on is: “Which RAM tests do not need to be performed due to the safety architecture?” Even high-performance tests do require execution time. In the range of safety-related systems, diagnostics may consume most of the central processing unit (CPU) time, depending on the architecture. Therefore, this paper depicts how architectural characteristics can be taken into account to reasonably simplify specific RAM tests. This paper introduces our research on RAM tests in the range of safety-related systems. Therefore, key topics are introduced, first: comprehensively and starting from scratch, thus enabling anyone to follow our research. Second, an example is shown on how detecting stuck-at faults of address and data words, as demanded by IEC 61508 Ed.2.0, can be simplified by taking advantage of a 1oo2D safety architecture.

The authors present their latest research results and developments of a code generator for Matlab / Simulink block diagrams and to download the generated code onto safety related systems such as a safety PLC (Programmable Logic Controller). An example demonstrates the different stages for code generation, evaluation and conversion before such code can be used in process industries. systematic approaches are necessary when such source code is embedded in process units. To the best knowledge of the authors, Matlab/Simulink source code has not been transferred on safety PLC before. Matlab / Simulink is an advanced and matured programming environment, especially for simulations of engineering processes and systems. Hardly no hardware exists, when it comes to download the developed algorithms and to use it in real world applications and so far this approach is the only one for using developed and tested Matlab / Simulink software on an safety related system. © 2008 IEEE.

Various research institutions and semiconductor manufacturers have presented approaches for miniaturized safety systems based on redundant configurations in the last years. ICAS has been working on approaches for Safety systems on Chip (SoC) since 2005 and has developed several certified variants of safety SoCs in this context together with well-known safety manufacturers. In parallel, the further development of the architecture of safety SoCs was also driven forward and manifested with the ReSCU-V1 in 2018. A logical consequence is the development of the ReSCU-V2, with which further architectural developments of the safe SoC design at ICAS in kassel have succeeded with a practically completely redundant architecture. The resulting SoC was realized on a 180 nm process from UMC. It has a chip size of 5×5 mm and consumes less than 500 mW of power.

The next milestone in the automotive industry is to achieve the complete autonomous driving capability. This demands high performance computing controllers and a larger number of Electronic Controller Units (ECUs) for realizing this goal. Also, the current shift towards electric cars where the battery capacity is limited, urges for new efficient approaches. Therefore, developing compact, miniaturized integrated controller that encompasses all the features is essential for minimizing the power consumption. At the same time, this approach of ECUs must also ensure the cost efficiency. To address and handle this need, the reduction in the ECUs numbers is necessary to reduce the cost factor but at the same time not compromising on the functionalities. Therefore, the approach of integrating these individual features in a single ECU is a promising way forward, i.e., system-on-Chip (SoC). To design and implement such an SoC for the automotive industry that ensures the safe operation of the controlled functions, it must follow a particular development criterion according to the ISO 26262 - functional safety of the road vehicles. This work focuses on the development of an SoC according to the ISO 26262 standard based on ARM Cortex M3 architecture which is an attractive candidate due to its low cost and low power consumption.

The mechanical force imparted by industrial robots is enormous and can lead to dangerous situations for human workers and property if they malfunction. system designs based on the redundancy concept are essential to avoid or mitigate the resulting risk, which is recommended by the various safety standards. In this paper, a 1oo2D based safety SoC that provides multiple Ethernet communication interfaces is presented. Two different design approaches are implemented using the in-house FPGA development board based on the LEON3 soft processor. The software algorithms for each approach are developed and verified.

Software-Engineering is very important today. In industry (specifically by software critical system) it is important to produce high reliable software, i.e. software with low proportion of faults. To produce such reliable software, a long handling process is required, and because this process consumes a large amount of time and resources to achieve the desired reliability goals it is useful to use Software Reliability Stochastic Models to predict the required software testing time. In this paper a new approach to reflecting the residual number of critical failures in software-systems is introduced. There are currently very few processes enabling us to predict the reliability of the critical failures or the critical failure rate for critical systems. Furthermore, we will focus on distinguishing the critical failures in the software. We will thus distinguish both critical as well as non-critical failures in the Software. Therefore it is important to divide the process into two classes, detection- and correction class. To develop an approach it is necessary to determine corresponding distribution functions and model assumptions.
