This note focuses on the problem of asymptotic stability of a class of linear neutral systems described by differential equations with delayed state. The delay is assumed unknown, but constant. Sufficient conditions for delayindependent asymptotic stability are given in terms of the existence of symmetric and positive definite solutions of a continuous Riccati algebraic matrix equation coupled with a discrete Lyapunov equation. The approach adopted here is based on a Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional technique.

This paper proposes a new kind of on-line identification method of continuous time-delay systems from sampled input-output data. In order to track the time-varying system parameters as well as time-delay, the recursive linear least squares (RLS) method is combined in a bootstrap manner with the genetic algorithm (GA) which has a high potential for global optimization. The time-delay is coded into binary bit strings and searched by the GA, while the system parameters are updated by the RLS method. Furthermore, this method (GALS method) is hybridized with the sequential nonlinear least squares method to improve the speed of convergence. Simulation results show that both the GALS and hybrid methods are efficient in the case that the system changes abruptly, and among them the hybrid method has superior convergence property to the GALs method and yields excellent estimation results in the case that the system changes with time continuously.

Measuring the distance and orientation of a planar surface using nonstructured lighting

He was a Visiting Researcher at University of Illinois during 1984–1985. He has been interested in vision system for mobile robots and image processing architectures. He is a member of the Society of Instrumental and Control Engineers Japan Robotics Society of Japan and Information Processing Society of Japan.

This paper proposes a method of 3-dimensional measurement of a planar surface by using two fixed light sources and a TV camera. A set of two images is recorded by the camera switching on each light alternately. The peak of the luminance distribution in each image is detected, and the orientation and distance of the planar surface are calculated. The position of the peak of a luminance distribution can be estimated accurately by using an image processing. The light sources can be conventional apparatus with no particular structure. The method is simple and suitable for a vision system on an indoor mobile robot.

Monostructure touch sensor with multifunction for discrimination of material properties

Received his M.E. degree from Tohoku University in 1970 and his Dr. of Eng. degree later. In 1970 he joined the General Institute of Electronic Technology. In 1987 he was the Head of the Electricity Standard Section in the General Institute of Electronic Technology. Since 1990 he has been a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering School of Science and Technology Saga University. He is engaged in research on intelligent accurate electrical measurements. He is a member of the Measurements and Automatic Control Society of Japan Japan Applied Physics Institute Japan ME Society and the Robotics Society of Japan.

This paper describes the development of a monostructure touch sensor that has three kinds of sensing functions for discriminating materials. The sensor consists of two spiral metallic lines on a thin insulating substrate and has four terminals. When the two lines are used as two coils, the sensor has the property of inductance. When the two lines are used as two parallel electrodes, the sensor has the property of capacitance. When one spiral metallic line is used as a heater and another is used as a resistor, the sensor has the property of a temperature sensor. The proposed sensor is used to discriminate typical materials such as iron, aluminum, copper, bronze, gum, wood, acrylic resin, styrene foam, etc. The experiments show that the sensor has considerably high potential in discriminating materials, indicating that the sensor would be a promising candidate for developing an artificial skin tactile sensing system in the future.

This paper gives a closed formula which expresses the variation of the leakage reactance of transformers as a function of the transformer tap position. The derivation of the formula is based on the analysis of the distortion of the leakage field as portions of the winding are cut out by means of tappings. Three cases are examined, depending on whether taps are cut out: - asymmetrically at the end of a winding, - at the electrical centre of a winding or - symmetrically at the end of a winding. The validity of the derived model is rested by comparison with existing transformer impedance correction data. Finally test results from the incorporation of the model in a load-flow program ave presented.

This paper deals with simultaneous control of acceleration transmission, wheel load fluctuation, suspension deflection and sprung mass displacement. The control theory is based on the robust H/sub /spl infin// control theory with the consideration of the modeling errors lumped into an unstructured uncertainty acting on the unperturbed plant. The design method is new and powerful for electronic car suspension's control systems, as it presents a new approach to the designers for the computation of a controller maintaining robust stability while guaranteeing the performance in a wide frequency range, even in the case of the controller is applied to the actual plant. Additionally, the paper emphasizes that the assumptions in the modeling step may lead to unrealistic control designs and, as an example, the effect of the rigidity assumption on the behavior of the open loop system is discussed.

Because of its capability of high-speed search, the associative memory (CAM) is expected to be used in a variety of information processing systems. In this paper, novel fault-tolerant techniques which are effective for on-line use are proposed for TLB which is an example of the application of CAM. First, fault and error models of the TLB consisting of the CAM part and the SRAM part are clarified. Then, the fault-tolerant techniques for these faults and errors, such as distance separable technique, cod-ing technique, simplified 1-out-of-n check and graceful degradation, are proposed. The distance separable technique which encodes the data stored in the CAM part is the one which masks the faulty CAM part and prevents errors from propagating to the subsequent circuits. The coding technique checks the one-to-one correspondence between the data in the CAM and those in SRAM by using the SEC-DED code with byte error detection capability, i.e., SEC-DED-SbED code, and at the same time it detects and corrects errors in the data stored in SRAM. The simplified 1-out-of-n check processes association errors. The graceful degradation gives a flag in the faulty memory section and prevents it from being used. The methods proposed in this paper are evaluated from area augmentation and error detection capability perspectives. The results show that the fault-tolerant TLB with 32 virtual address bits, 32 physical address bits and 128 entries gives single fault detection probability of nearly 99 percent with 28 percent area increase.

A Neural Network Approach to Failure Decision of Adaptively controlled Systems

In this paper, a combined method of change detection and failure decision is proposed for the system under the adaptive control based on the self-tuning regulator. The controlled system is assumed encounter unexpected parameter changes, which may be caused by a failure or a normal operation. Such a system change can effectively be detected by using Fullback Discrimination Information (KDI) as an index for model discrimination. In order to decide whether the detected system change is caused by a failure or not, a neural network approach to failure decision is introduced. Based on the knowledge about failure modes and system operations, the regulator parameter variations after the change detection are used as training data for the network learning. In this way an on-line monitoring scheme of adaptively controlled systems can be established. Simulation studies of a second-order damped oscillator have been earned out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

This paper presents an adaptive control scheme based on a fuzzy logic algorithm and its application to end-effector positioning of flexible-link manipulators. Here, a fuzzy based adaptive controller is considered due to its simplicity and the fact that it does not require expressing the controller in terms of the system parameters, as it is necessary in the case of self-tuning regulators. This controller is based on a functional fuzzy model where the consequents are crisp functions represent controllers designed for different operating regimes. The premise is constituted by the fuzzy subsets corresponding to the process parameters estimated in real time. The effectiveness of this new scheme is verified on a clamped free beam and a single-line flexible arm instrumented with piezoceramic sensors and actuators. It is shown that robust performance may be achieved in face of large parameter variations.< >

He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.
