Breast cancer is one of the most common causes of death among women worldwide. Early detection helps in reducing the number of deaths. Automated 3D Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) is a newer approach for breast screening, which has many advantages over handheld mammography such as safety, speed, and higher detection rate of breast cancer. Tumor detection, segmentation, and classification are key components in the analysis of medical images, especially challenging in the context of 3D ABUS due to the significant variability in tumor size and shape, unclear tumor boundaries, and a low signal-to-noise ratio. The lack of publicly accessible, well-labeled ABUS datasets further hinders the advancement of systems for breast tumor analysis. Addressing this gap, we have organized the inaugural Tumor Detection, Segmentation, and Classification Challenge on Automated 3D Breast Ultrasound 2023 (TDSC-ABUS2023). This initiative aims to spearhead research in this field and create a definitive benchmark for tasks associated with 3D ABUS image analysis. In this paper, we summarize the top-performing algorithms from the challenge and provide critical analysis for ABUS image examination. In conducting research and teaching in fields related to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), it is particularly important to select a universal, safe, open research platform and tools for rapid prototyping. Ready-to-use, low-cost micro-class UAVs such as Bebop 2 are successfully used in that regard. This article presents how to use the potential of this flying robot with Robot Operating System (ROS). The most important software solutions for the developed experimental testbed FlyBebop are characterized here. Their capabilities in research and education are exemplified using three distinct cases: 1) research results on the method of optimal, in-flight, iterative self-tuning of UAV position controller parameters (based only on current measurements), 2) the use of the reinforcement learning method in the autonomous landing of a single drone on a moving vehicle, 3) planning the movement of UAVs for autonomous video recording along the planned path in the arrangement: "cameraman drone" and "lighting technician drones".

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. Accurate diagnosis and effective monitoring require the precise classification of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. In this study, we introduce a novel approach that combines Adaptive Local Iterative Filtering (ALIF) for signal decomposition with an attention-enhanced cascaded deep neural network (CDNN) architecture. The ALIF algorithm decomposes EEG signals into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) that capture inherent oscillatory components. These IMFs are processed by the CDNN, which operates in two stages: a feature extraction module and a classification module. In the feature extraction stage, a SEblock channel attention mechanism dynamically prioritizes significant features within the IMFs. The classification stage employs a hybrid CNN-LSTM architecture that effectively captures both spatial and temporal dependencies. To enhance interpretability, the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) framework is incorporated to provide insights into the model’s decision-making process, while Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) visualizes the most discriminative regions in the input data. Rigorously validated using 10-fold cross-validation on the Bonn and EEG Epilepsy databases, the proposed methodology achieved an exceptional classification accuracy of 100%, with sensitivity, specificity, and F1-scores exceeding 99% across various scenarios. The integration of SHAP and Grad-CAM not only elucidates the model’s decision processes but also contributes to a more interpretable and reliable system for epileptic EEG signal classification. This synergistic combination of advanced signal processing, deep learning, and interpretability techniques holds significant potential to enhance epilepsy diagnosis and strengthen trust in clinical decision support systems.

Consciousness has been historically a heavily debated topic in engineering, science, and philosophy. On the contrary, awareness had less success in raising the interest of scholars in the past. However, things are changing as more and more researchers are getting interested in answering questions concerning what awareness is and how it can be artificially generated. The landscape is rapidly evolving, with multiple voices and interpretations of the concept being conceived and techniques being developed. The goal of this paper is to summarize and discuss the ones among these voices that are connected with projects funded by the EIC Pathfinder Challenge called "Awareness Inside", a nonrecurring call for proposals within Horizon Europe that was designed specifically for fostering research on natural and synthetic awareness. In this perspective, we dedicate special attention to challenges and promises of applying synthetic awareness in robotics, as the development of mature techniques in this new field is expected to have a special impact on generating more capable and trustworthy embodied systems. © 2024, CC BY.

Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has achieved impressive performance in various robotic control tasks, ranging from motion planning and navigation to end-to-end visual manipulation. However, stability is not guaranteed in DRL. From a control-theoretic perspective, stability is the most impor-tant property for any control system, since it is closely related to safety, robustness, and reliability of robotic systems. In this paper, we propose a DRL framework with stability guarantee by exploiting the Lyapunov's method in control theory. A sampling-based stability theorem is proposed for stochastic nonlinear systems modeled by the Markov decision process. Then we show that the stability condition could be exploited as a critic in the actor-critic RL framework and propose an efficient DRL algorithm to learn a controller/policy with a stability guarantee. In the simulated experiments, our approach is evaluated on several well-known examples including the classic CartPole balancing, 3-dimensional robot control, and control of synthetic biology gene regulatory networks. As a qualitative evaluation of stability, we show that the learned policies can enable the systems to recover to the equilibrium or tracking target when interfered by uncertainties such as unseen disturbances and system parametric variations to a certain extent. The control of temperature in welding is essential to maintain the quality of metal joints. Due to current fluctuations and instrument errors, the quality of joint may be affected. The excess of temperature or molten stage may leads to change the effect of micro structure. An automatic temperature sensing system is needed to eliminate this problem. It is fulfilled through Internet of Things (IoT) based temperature sensing on molten metal in welding. The temperature sensors, micro controller, LAN/Wireless communications and server are used to enhance the automatic temperature sensing on molten metal in welding process. The experimentation is conducted on arc welding of mild steel. The quality characteristics and optimization studied through Taguchi method.

—To mitigate the radiologist’s workload, computer-aided diagnosis with the capability to review and analyze medical images is gradually deployed. Deep learning-based region of interest segmentation is among the most exciting use cases. However, this paradigm is restricted in real-world clinical applications due to the poor robustness and generalization. The issue is more sinister with a lack of training data. In this paper, we address the challenge from the representation learning point of view. We investigate that the collapsed representations, as one of the main reasons which caused poor robustness and generalization, could be avoided through transfer learning. Therefore, we propose a novel two-stage framework for robust generalized segmentation. In particular, an unsupervised Tile-wise AutoEncoder (T-AE) pretraining architecture is coined to learn meaningful representation. Furthermore, this learned prior knowledge is transferred to the segmentation benchmark. Coupled with an image reconstruction network, the representation keeps to be decoded, encouraging the model to capture more semantic features. Experiments of lung segmentation on multi chest X-ray datasets are conducted. Empirically, the comprehensive results demonstrate the superior generalization capability of the proposed framework on unseen domains in terms of high performance and robustness to corruption, especially under the scenario of the limited training data. © 2021, CC BY.

The basis for properly verified R&D works is to provide reliable prototyping tools at three most important stages: computer simulation, laboratory tests and real-world experiments. In the laboratory-limited conditions, particular importance is attributed to the first two stages, especially in the context of the safety development of autonomous flights of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) groups in various missions. The open-source framework Aerostack support those needs and its effectiveness has been proven in the International Micro Air Vehicle Indoor Competitions (IMAV 2013, 2016, 2017) and Mohammed Bin Zayed International robotics Challenge (MBZIRC 2020). In the paper, the exemplary functionalities for the new version of Aerostack Version 3.0 Distribution Sirocco (Aerial robotics framework for the industry), extended additionally with a library of new behaviors, are presented. The mission of UAVs can be developed fast and effectively in order to conduct test flights with real drones in lab, before one will decide to fly autonomously outdoor. The representative results obtained for low-cost *** 2.0 UAV models in two missions, are presented. The first mission is autonomous patrolling the area by a pair of UAVs, the second - intercepting the intruder in guarded area by the guard UAV.
