A simple model of the phase-detection autofocus device based on the partially masked sensor pixels is described. The cross-correlation function of the half-images registered by the masked pixels is proposed as a focus function. It is shown that—in such setting—focusing is equivalent to searching of the cross-correlation function maximum. Application of stochastic approximation algorithms to unimodal and non-unimodal focus functions is shortly discussed.

The goal of the work presented here is to influence the overall behaviour of specific animal societies by integrating computational mechatronic devices (robots) into those societies. To do so, these devices should be accepted by the animals aspart of the society and/or as part of the collectively formed environment. For that, we have developed two sets of robotic hardware for integrating into societies of two different animals: zebra fish and young honeybees. We also developed mechanisms to provide feedback from the behaviours of societies for the controllers of the robotic system. Two different computational methods are then used as the controllers of the robots in simulation and successfully adapted by evolutionary algorithms to influence the simulated animals for desired behaviours. Together, these advances in mechatronic hardware, feedback mechanisms, and controller methodology are laying essential foundations to facilitate experiments on modulating self-organised behaviour in mixed animal -- robot societies.

Efficiency of the autofocusing algorithm implementations based on various orthogonal transforms is examined. The algorithm uses the variance of an image acquired by a sensor as a focus function. To compute the estimate of the variance we exploit the equivalence between that estimate and the image orthogonal expansion. Energy consumption of three implementations exploiting either of the following fast orthogonal transforms: the discrete cosine, the Walsh-Hadamard, and the Haar wavelet one, is evaluated and compared. Furthermore, it is conjectured that the computation precision can considerably be reduced if the image is heavily corrupted by the noise, and a simple problem of optimal word bit-length selection with respect to the signal variance is analyzed.

In the paper mobile manipulator using skid steering platform, has been considered. Such system is underactuated. This paper presents the concept of artificial force applied in robust control an discussion of obtained results. Artificial force concept assumes full rank of input matrix, describing relationships between controlled variables and number of actuators. Despite of assumption that the additional actuator signal is identically equal to zero, the invertibility of the input matrix is achieved. This signal is used to generate reference signal, needed in control algorithm. Mathematical proof of proper action of such a control law has been presented using Lyapunov-like function. Usefulness of this concept, under the assumption of parametric uncertainty of the terrain as well as in order to track inadmissible trajectories, has been verified in numerous simulations.

In this paper modification of a motion planning method based on the endogenous configuration space approach was proposed aimed at solving a prescribed motion planning task sequentially. In an iterative process, the basic method is called and final values of controls from the previous iteration set constraints on controls for the current iteration. In this way, some required properties of resulting controls are obtained (continuity, continuous derivative, etc.) The proposed method was illustrated on exemplary nonholonomic systems.
