This paper introduces an innovative model-driven approach for seamlessly integrating control logic into the building planning phase, ensuring consistency throughout deployment. Leveraging an open building information model (BIM), the approach enables model engineers to embed control logic directly into the BIM using an open language. The integrated model facilitates automatic extraction of control logic information, supporting efficient modifications. A proof-of-concept implementation using SIMULTAN, IEC 61131-3 Structured Text, and IDA ICE demonstrates successful deployment in a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) use case. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper introduces an innovative approach for the description and mapping of applications in the smart grid domain. By utilizing a skill-based engineering approach, not only flexibility and changeability will increase, but also the need for describing the same application multiple times for different grids decays. As a first use-case, Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restauration (FLISR) as an example application and a real-world grid in Vietnam have been chosen. By showing how this novel approach could be applied to these two entities, its potential is demonstrated. The IEC 61850-based approach uses a two-step procedure for the mapping. After defining the application's requirements, a mapping algorithm can check if the application can be deployed to a specific grid. In the second step, the actual mapping is described to deploy the application to the devices in the field automatically. Having the requirement description, a recommender system can suggest possible adaptions to the grid in case the check fails. © 2024 IEEE.

Exchanging technical documents in the building automation domain is a complicated process. Files are distributed either as drawings, spreadsheets, or text documents. Each stakeholder has to re-enter the data into their own system, and changes are revised manually, often even without revision control. This paper presents a uniform exchange format based on the 'graphical' standard VDI 3814. To increase acceptance, the industry standards XSD and XML were chosen. As a result of this work, a model is provided that covers the concepts and exchange files provided in the VDI 3814 standard. Given a supporting tool, data can be entered, revised, and exchanged automatically. Based on this unified representation, it is subsequently possible to transfer the data into one of the already existing ontologies in this domain by using model transformations. Some of these ontologies are also referred to in this paper. © 2023 IEEE.

Data-driven output regulation control for constrained linear systems

This study introduces a data-driven approach for state and output feedback control addressing the constrained output regulation problem in unknown linear discrete-time systems. Our method ensures effective tracking performance while satisfying the state and input constraints, even when system matrices are not available. We first establish a sufficient condition necessary for the existence of a solution pair to the regulator equation and propose a data-based approach to obtain the feedforward and feedback control gains for state feedback control using linear programming. Furthermore, we design a refined Luenberger observer to accurately estimate the system state, while keeping the estimation error within a predefined set. By combining output regulation theory, we develop an output feedback control strategy. The stability of the closed-loop system is rigorously proved to be asymptotically stable by further leveraging the concept of λ-contractive sets.

The unfolding climate crisis has resulted in a rising interest for increasing sustainability awareness and achieving energy savings worldwide. Several interventions within educational environments have been aimed at mobilizing younger audiences toward such goals. However, most of the interventions carried out so far are based on a subset of possible tools (e.g., IoT monitoring and gamification) and offer "all or nothing" approaches, which do not cope well with the uniqueness of schools and the need to adapt interventions to specific contexts (e.g. school size, building, curriculum, and teacher involvement). We present a large-scale intervention in 25 school buildings in Europe over the course of two school years. Our intervention was based on the installation of a relatively low-cost IoT infrastructure in schools, that produced real-time energy-related data from the school buildings involved, and the application of a strategy combining, in a flexible and customizable way, educational activities, monitoring tools, gamification, and competition to motivate behavior change and achieve energy savings. Overall, 2983 students and 204 educators were directly involved to a variable degree of participation. Our results indicate a positive overall result in terms of short-term energy savings in most schools involved, with an average reduction of 20%–25% in the energy that could be affected by end-users, as well as a 32.9% increase after the intervention in students self-reporting good or very good sustainability awareness. These findings suggest that such interventions can be a valuable step toward educating young students regarding sustainability and toward sustainable schools, if designed and implemented properly. © 2014 IEEE.
