Given the critical role of rotating machinery in industrial cyber-physical systems (ICPS), ensuring their reliable operation is essential for the stability and safety of ICPS. Deep neural networks have demonstrated competitive results for intelligent fault diagnosis, which are usually trained via the historical data of all fault modes. However, in real engineering, it is usually difficult to collect samples and exhaust all failures during the training stage. As a result, out-of-distribution fault diagnosis (OOD-FD) becomes a more realistic problem that requires the methods to not only accurately diagnose the known faults, but also effectively recognize unknown ones. Therefore, a novel orthogonal anchor clustering with focal attention (FA-OAC) is proposed in this paper for OOD-FD. Firstly, an orthogonal anchor clustering (OAC) algorithm is proposed to fix the class center of each fault mode orthogonally and distinguish the known and unknown faults at the class level. Then, because the identifiability of different fault modes changes a lot in OOD-FD, the focal attention mechanism is applied to dynamically adjust the attention to different fault modes according to the distance loss of OAC, thus addressing the identifiability imbalance problem. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, different OOD-FD tasks are designed based on two rotating machinery datasets. The experimental results and comparison with state-of-the-art fault diagnosis methods have demonstrated that the proposed method has improved the OOD-FD performance greatly and therefore provides an effective tool in real engineering. © 2023 IEEE.

Anomaly detection is essential to ensure the safety of industrial processes. This paper presents an anomaly detection approach based on the probability density estimation and principle of justifiable granularity. First, time series data are transformed into a two-dimensional information granule by the principle of justifiable granularity. Then, the test statistic is constructed, and the probability density and cumulative distribution functions of the test statistic are calculated. Next, the confidence level determines the test threshold. Finally, the time series data of a key parameter in the sintering process is used as a case study. The experimental result demonstrates that the proposed approach can detect abnormal time series data effectively, providing an accurate and effective solution for detecting time series anomalies in industrial processes. © 2023 IEEE.

Sleep Position Classification using Transfer Learning for Bed-based Pressure Sensors

Bed-based pressure-sensitive mats (PSMs) offer a non-intrusive way of monitoring patients during sleep. We focus on four-way sleep position classification using data collected from a PSM placed under a mattress in a sleep clinic. Sleep positions can affect sleep quality and the prevalence of sleep disorders, such as apnea. Measurements were performed on patients with suspected sleep disorders referred for assessments at a sleep clinic. Training deep learning models can be challenging in clinical settings due to the need for large amounts of labeled data. To overcome the shortage of labeled training data, we utilize transfer learning to adapt pre-trained deep learning models to accurately estimate sleep positions from a low-resolution PSM dataset collected in a polysomnography sleep lab. Our approach leverages Vision Transformer models pre-trained on ImageNet using masked autoencoding (ViTMAE) and a pre-trained model for human pose estimation (ViTPose). These approaches outperform previous work from PSM-based sleep pose classification using deep learning (TCN) as well as traditional machine learning models (SVM, XGBoost, Random Forest) that use engineered features. We evaluate the performance of sleep position classification from 112 nights of patient recordings and validate it on a higher resolution 13-patient dataset. Despite the challenges of differentiating between sleep positions from low-resolution PSM data, our approach shows promise for real-world deployment in clinical settings. © 2025, CC BY.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are widely used in fields like computer vision and natural language processing. A key component of DNN training is the optimizer. SGD-Momentum is popular in many DNN methodologies, such as ResNet and DenseNet, due to its simplicity and effectiveness. However, its slow convergence rate limits its use. To overcome this, we introduce inter-gradient collision into SGD-Momentum, inspired by the elastic collision model in physics. This new method, called ICSGD-Momentum, aims to improve convergence. We provide theoretical proof of convergence and establish a regret bound for ICSGD-Momentum. Experiments on benchmarks including function optimization, CIFAR-100, ImageNet, Penn Treebank, COCO, and YCB-Video show that ICSGD-Momentum accelerates training and enhances the generalization performance of DNNs compared to optimizers like SGD-Momentum, Adam, RAdam, Adabound, and AdaBelief. © 2024 IEEE.

In this study, we employ a pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), specifically ResNetl8, for automated sleep apnea classification using spectral images derived from Respiratory Inductance Plethysmography (RIP) signals. Using data from 130 patients who underwent diagnostic polysomnogram (PSG) at the Sleep Disorders Clinic of the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, we compare the performance of three models fine-tuned using spectrograms of 60 sec segments of the RIPsum, RIPflow, and the concurrent thoracic (THO) and abdominal (ABD) RIP signals. In the case of the THO/ABD model, concurrent spectrograms of the THO and ABD signals are combined into a single image. The resulting models classified any apnea events (central and obstructive apnea/hypopnea) from normal respiration accuracy ranging from 87-90% and F1 scores ranging 90–91 %. We also examine the models' performance on classification of central sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, and normal respiration. The THO/ ABD model classified central apnea events with 89.4% precision, 90.2% recall, 89.8% F1 score and 94.4% specificity. Our results show that RIP belts can be used as an effective screening tool for sleep apnea, and central sleep apnea more specifically, utilizing smaller datasets and minimal training. This approach may be useful for non-invasive, cost-effective diagnostic methodologies at home and in clinical environments.

Recently, Self-Supervised Features (SSF) trained on extensive speech datasets have shown significant performance gains across various speech processing tasks. Nevertheless, their effectiveness in Speech Enhancement (SE) systems is often suboptimal due to insufficient optimization for noisy environments. To address this issue, we present a novel methodology that directly utilizes SSFs extracted from clean speech for enhancing SE models. Specifically, we leverage the clean SSFs for latent space modeling within the Conditional Variational Autoencoder (CVAE) framework. Consequently, we enable our model to fully leverage the knowledge existing in the clean SSFs without the interference of noise. In experiments, our approach yields clear improvements over existing methods that use SSFs across six evaluation metrics. Furthermore, we provide comprehensive analyses to validate the effectiveness of 1) incorporating clean SSFs within the CVAE framework and 2) the training techniques used to achieve optimal performance from our approach in SE systems. This paper introduces a structured approach for creating node signature graphs in energy graph-based visualization for industrial systems, focusing on anomaly detection. It examines the relationship between graph cardinality and the singular value decomposition analysis applied in the energy graph-based visualization method. The results reveal a trade-of between graph complexity and singular value resolution. The study highlights how graph structure affects energy flow monitoring and anomaly detection. It notably enables fault detection in components not represented as nodes, enhancing the methodology in energy-based system monitoring.

The management of a daily diet is a significant concern among individuals in modern culture. The utilization of dietary assessment systems has significantly contributed to the efficient management of malnutrition and dietary habits over a period of time. In order to determine the nutritional value of the food that individuals consume, this study introduces a novel food monitoring system and its architecture. By creating a dataset of food images in a tray and using image processing, machine learning, and computer vision techniques, the nutrients and calories consumed by a patient are calculated. The proposed system achieves a 95.6% Intersection over Union score in the segmentation task, 92.3% top-1 accuracy in the classification task, and 4.6 g mean weight absolute error in the weight estimation *** Relevance: The proposed system has the ability to calculate the nutritional composition, encompassing calories, proteins, fats, and carbs, of food consumed by a patient, making it suitable for nutritional monitoring applications and healthcare systems that aim to monitor malnutrition in hospital patients. © 2023 IEEE.
