The challenge of the Semantic Web Mining technologies in the e-Learning domain can relate to the provision of personalized experiences for the users. Particularly, these applications can take into consideration the individual needs and requirements of learners. In this paper, we propose a framework for personalised e-Learning based on aggregate usage profiles and a domain ontology. We have distinguished two stages in the whole process, one of offline tasks that includes data preparation, ontology creation and usage mining and one of online tasks that concerns the production of recommendations.

As microarchitectural and system complexity grows, comprehending system behavior becomes increasingly difficult, and often requires obtaining and sifting through voluminous event traces or coordinating results from multiple, non-localized sources. Owl is a proposed framework that overcomes limitations faced by traditional performance counters and monitoring facilities in dealing with such complexity by pervasively deploying programmable monitoring elements throughout a system. The design exploits reconfigurable or programmable logic to realize hardware monitors located at event sources, such as memory buses. These monitors run and writeback results autonomously with respect to the CPU, mitigating the system impact of interrupt-driven monitoring or the need to communicate irrelevant events to higher levels of the system. The monitors are designed to snoop any kind of system transaction, e.g., within the core, on a bus, across the wire, or within I/O devices. Copyright 2005 ACM.

This paper introduces the architecture of an open information and communication platform that integrates all relevant participants in health and social sector. The main concept of the proposed platform is based on concept introduced by new computing paradigms and the need of transformation of the existing internetworking and web technologies into a human resource pool that will be accessible by anyone, at anytime, and from everywhere in support of their needs. This platform intends to create the essential infrastructure for the provisioning of health and social services to individuals that receive residential care using Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks over Internet, GSM and PSTN networks. The use of new computing models such as Service-Oriented computing, Grid, P2P and argumentation technologies are discussed. Furthermore, the functional requirements and the architecture of a complete solution are presented.

The paper gives an overview of the Yoto project, a novel e-learning initiative to build up an electrical engineering knowledge base. It also presents a new e-module of the project relating to the steady-state operation of dc-dc converters. The multimedia rich module contains numerous interactive tools promoting the high level education in the academy sector and the vocational trainings in the industry. The interactive tools also highly support the circuit design process by enabling fast calculation and access to relevant circuit quantities and waveforms (voltages and currents) in steady-state without long simulations.

The wealth of information available in the internet or local corpora has increased while our ability to search and retrieve relevant information is being reduced. Hypermedia, being complex information objects, are difficult to manage. In this paper we propose some new algorithms for searching and retrieving hypermedia documents from a local server by taking advantage content and context information. Besides presenting new solutions for hypertext, we review the state of the art in multimedia data mining and present future trends in this research area.

Light emitting diodes (LED) are usually the alternative optoelectronic devices for optical communications with moderate bandwidth efficiency and bit rates, compared to semiconductor lasers. Laser applications dominate the long distance communication networks. However LED seems to be a very good solution, especially in very short distance communication networks, where Plastic Optical Fibers, (POF) are used as the optical transmission medium. This paper investigates a qualitative technique of calculating the bandwidth, based on first principles of semiconductor physics. This technique is more convenient for a first approach of the subject on optical communication networks and its simplicity provides a very useful analytical tool. Finally these results are compared with the existing experimental ones.

Virtual Enterprises are a, relatively, new business model that is greatly depended on network technology. Providing services in such an environment is a challenge in itself;architectural, technological and organisational difficulties have not permitted yet the development of a framework for Virtual Enterprise enaction. In this paper we describe a Virtual Private Network architecture that uses special monitor and coordination processes in order to achieve efficient delivery of services and activities in Virtual Enterprise environments. We discuss the general architecture of the system, emphasising on the solutions used to monitor and co-ordinate various activities.
