A study of the Higgs boson decaying into bottom quarks (H → $$ b\overline{b} $$ ) and charm quarks (H → $$ c\overline{c} $$ ) is performed, in the associated production channel of the Higgs boson with a W or Z boson, using 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector. The individual production of WH and ZH with H → $$ b\overline{b} $$ is established with observed (expected) significances of 5.3 (5.5) and 4.9 (5.6) standard deviations, respectively. Differential cross-section measurements of the gauge boson transverse momentum within the simplified template cross-section framework are performed in a total of 13 kinematical fiducial regions. The search for the H → $$ c\overline{c} $$ decay yields an observed (expected) upper limit at 95% confidence level of 11.5 (10.6) times the Standard Model prediction. The results are also used to set constraints on the charm coupling modifier, resulting in |κc| < 4.2 at 95% confidence level. Combining the H → $$ b\overline{b} $$ and H → $$ c\overline{c} $$ measurements constrains the absolute value of the ratio of Higgs-charm and Higgs-bottom coupling modifiers (|κc/κb|) to be less than 3.6 at 95% confidence level.

A search for pair production of vector-like leptons coupling to first- and second-generation Standard Model leptons is presented. The search is based on a dataset of proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. Events are categorised depending on the flavour and multiplicity of leptons (electrons or muons), as well as on the scores of a deep neural network targeting particular signal topologies according to the decay modes of the vector-like leptons. In each of the signal regions, the scalar sum of the transverse momentum of the leptons and the missing transverse momentum is analysed. The main background processes are estimated using dedicated control regions in a simultaneous fit with the signal regions to data. No significant excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed and limits are set at 95% confidence level on the production cross-sections of vector-like electrons and muons as a function of the vector-like lepton mass, separately for SU(2) doublet and singlet scenarios. The resulting mass lower limits are 1220 GeV (1270 GeV) and 320 GeV (400 GeV) for vector-like electrons (muons) in the doublet and singlet scenarios, respectively.

Differential two-particle normalized cumulants (R2) and transverse momentum correlations (P2) are measured as a function of the relative pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle difference (∆η,∆) of charged particle pairs in minimum bias pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV. The measurements use charged hadrons in the pseudorapidity region of |η| T 2 and P2 measured in pp collisions exhibit features qualitatively similar to those observed in p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions. The ∆η and ∆ root mean square widths of the near-side peak of the correlation functions are evaluated and compared with those observed in p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions and show smooth evolution with the multiplicity of charged particles produced in the collision. The comparison of the measured correlation functions with predictions from PYTHIA8 shows that this model qualitatively captures their basic structure and characteristics but feature important differences. In addition, the RCD2 is used to determine the charge balance function of hadrons produced within the detector acceptance of the measurements. The integral of the balance function is found to be compatible with those reported by a previous measurement in Pb–Pb collisions. These results, which are sensitive to the interplay between the underlying event and mini-jets in pp collisions, establish a baseline for heavy-ion collisions. © 2024, CC BY.

The ALICE Collaboration presents a new suite of jet substructure measurements in Pb–Pb and pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair √sNN = 5.02 TeV. These measurements provide access to the internal structure of jets via the momentum and angle of their constituents, probing how the quark–gluon plasma modifies jets, an effect known as jet quenching. Jet grooming additionally removes soft wide-angle radiation to enhance perturbative accuracy and reduce experimental uncertainties. We report the groomed and ungroomed jet mass mjet and jet angularities λακ using κ = 1 and α > 0. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed at midrapidity using the anti-kT algorithm with resolution parameter R = 0.2. A narrowing of the jet mass and angularity distributions in Pb–Pb collisions with respect to pp is observed and is enhanced for groomed results, confirming modification of the jet core. By using consistent jet definitions and kinematic cuts between the mass and angularities for the first time, previous inconsistencies in the interpretation of quenching measurements are resolved, rectifying a hurdle for understanding how jet quenching arises from first principles and highlighting the importance of a well-controlled baseline. These results are compared with a variety of theoretical models of jet quenching, providing constraints on jet energy-loss mechanisms in the quark–gluon plasma. © 2024, CC BY.

The distribution of angular correlations between prompt charm hadrons and primary charged particles in pp collisions is sensitive to the charm-quark hadronisation process. In this letter, charm-baryon correlations are measured for the first time by studying the azimuthal-angle difference between charged particles and prompt Λc+ baryons produced in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV, with the ALICE detector. Λc+ baryons are reconstructed at midrapidity (|y| T T > 0.3 GeV/c and pseudorapidity |η| TΛ+c,D c+ -baryon triggers than with D-meson triggers, both in the collinear and opposite directions with respect to the trigger particle. These differences can be quantified by the comparison of the properties of the near- and away-side correlation peaks, and are not reproduced by predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators, generally underpredicting the associated particle yields at p Tassoc c+ -baryon and D-meson associated peak yields could suggest a modified fragmentation of the charm quark, or a different hadronisation process, when a charm baryon is produced in the final state. © 2024, CC BY.

The paper presents a search for supersymmetric particles produced in proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV and decaying into final states with missing transverse momentum and jets originating from charm quarks. The data were taken with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN from 2015 to 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. No significant excess of events over the expected Standard Model background expectation is observed in optimized signal regions, and limits are set on the production cross-sections of the supersymmetric particles. Pair production of charm squarks or top squarks, each decaying into a charm quark and the lightest supersymmetric particle $$ {\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ , is excluded at 95% confidence level for squarks with masses up to 900 GeV for scenarios where the mass of $$ {\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ is below 50 GeV. Additionally, the production of leptoquarks with masses up to 900 GeV is excluded for the scenario where up-type leptoquarks decay into a charm quark and a neutrino. Model-independent limits on cross-sections and event yields for processes beyond the Standard Model are also reported.

Accurate phenology models are important to predict how global climate change will continue to alter the timing of plant phenological events, such as spring greenup in deciduous broadleaf forests. While there is merit in long-term predictions, investigating how models can predict near-term (1– 35 days) canopy greenness throughout the spring allows us to validate performance and understanding now. The Ecological Forecasting Initiative’s NEON Forecasting Challenge, is an open challenge to the community to predict daily greenness values, measured through digital images collected by the PhenoCam Network at National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) sites. For the first round of the challenge, which is presented here, teams were tasked to forecast phenology at eight deciduous broadleaf sites. A total of 192,536 predictions were submitted, representing eighteen models, including a persistence and a day of year mean null models. We found that forecast skill was highest when forecasting earlier in the greenup curve compared to the end, for shorter lead times, for sites that greened up earlier, and when submitting forecasts during times other than near budburst. The models based on day of year historical mean had the highest predictive skill across the challenge period. In this first round of the challenge, by synthesizing across forecasts, we started to elucidate what factors affect the predictive skill of near-term phenology forecasts, which future rounds will continue to investigate. © 2023, The Authors. The first measurements of proton emission accompanied by neutron emission in the electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) of 208Pb nuclei in the ALICE experiment at the LHC are presented. The EMD protons and neutrons emitted at very forward rapidities are detected by the proton and neutron Zero Degree Calorimeters of the ALICE experiment. The emission cross sections of zero, one, two, and three protons accompanied by at least one neutron were measured in ultraperipheral 208Pb–208Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair √sNN = 5.02 TeV. These 0p, 1p, 2p, and 3p cross sections are described by the RELDIS model, and according to this model, they are associated with the production of various isotopes of Pb, Tl, Hg, and Au in the EMD of 208Pb. The cross sections of the emission of a single proton accompanied by the emission of one, two, or three neutrons in EMD were also measured. The data are significantly overestimated by the RELDIS model, which predicts that the (1p,1n), (1p,2n), and (1p,3n) cross sections are very similar to the cross sections for the production of the thallium isotopes 206,205,204Tl. © 2024, CC BY.
