This article presents a search for a heavy charged Higgs boson produced in association with a top quark and a bottom quark, and decaying into a W boson and a 125 GeV Higgs boson h. The search is performed in final states with one charged lepton, missing transverse momentum, and jets using proton-proton collision data at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the LHC at CERN. This data set corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The search is conducted by examining the reconstructed invariant mass distribution of the Wh candidates for evidence of a localised excess in the charged Higgs boson mass range from 250 GeV to 3 TeV. No significant excess of data over the expected background is observed and 95% confidence-level upper limits between 2.8 pb and 1.2 fb are placed on the production cross-section times branching ratio for charged Higgs bosons decaying into Wh.

The momentum-differential invariant cross sections of π0 and η mesons are reported for pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV at midrapidity (|y| T T 0 and η, respectively, extending the pT coverage of previous measurements. Transverse-mass-scaling violation of up to 60% at low transverse momentum has been observed, agreeing with measurements at lower collision energies. Transverse Bjorken x (xT) scaling of the π0 cross sections at LHC energies is fulfilled with a power-law exponent of n = 5.01±0.05, consistent with values obtained for charged pions at similar collision energies. The data is compared to predictions from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations, where the π0 spectrum is best described using the CT18 parton distribution function and the NNFF1.0 or BDSS fragmentation function. Expectations from PYTHIA8 and EPOS LHC overestimate the spectrum for the π0 and are not able to describe the shape and magnitude of the η spectrum. The charged-particle multiplicity dependent π0 and η pT spectra show the expected hardening with increasing multiplicity. This is demonstrated across a broad transverse-momentum range and up to events with a charged-particle multiplicity exceeding five times the mean value in minimum bias collisions. While the importance of automatic image analysis is continuously increasing, recent meta-research revealed major flaws with respect to algorithm validation. Performance metrics are particularly key for meaningful, objective, and transparent performance assessment and validation of the used automatic algorithms, but relatively little attention has been given to the practical pitfalls when using specific metrics for a given image analysis task. These are typically related to (1) the disregard of inherent metric properties, such as the behaviour in the presence of class imbalance or small target structures, (2) the disregard of inherent data set properties, such as the non-independence of the test cases, and (3) the disregard of the actual biomedical domain interest that the metrics should reflect. This living dynamically document has the purpose to illustrate important limitations of performance metrics commonly applied in the field of image analysis. In this context, it focuses on biomedical image analysis problems that can be phrased as image-level classification, semantic segmentation, instance segmentation, or object detection task. A measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions, Rτ/e = B(W → τν)/B(W → eν), is performed using a sample of W bosons originating from top-quark decays to final states containing τ-leptons or electrons. This measurement uses pp collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV, collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider during Run 2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The W → τντ (with τ → eνeντ) and W → eνe decays are distinguished using the differences in the impact parameter distributions and transverse momentum spectra of the electrons. The measured ratio of branching fractions Rτ/e = 0.975 ± 0.012 (stat.) ± 0.020 (syst.), is consistent with the Standard Model assumption of lepton flavour universality in W-boson decays.

A search for flavor-changing neutral-current couplings between a top quark, an up or charm quark and a Z boson is presented, using proton–proton collision data at √s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analyzed dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. The search targets both single-top-quark events produced as gq → tZ (with q = u, c) and top-quark-pair events, with one top quark decaying through the t → Zq channel. The analysis considers events with three leptons (electrons or muons), a b-tagged jet, possible additional jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data are found to be consistent with the background-only hypothesis and 95% confidence-level limits on the t → Zq branching ratios are set, assuming only tensor operators of the Standard Model effective field theory framework contribute to the tZq vertices. These are 6.2 × 10−5 (13 × 10−5) for t → Zu (t → Zc) for a left-handed tZq coupling, and 6.6 × 10−5 (12 × 10−5) in the case of a right-handed coupling. These results are interpreted as 95% CL upper limits on the strength of corresponding couplings, yielding limits for (formula presented) and (formula presented) and (formula presented) of 0.15 (0.16), and limits for (formula presented) and (formula presented) and (formula presented) of 0.22 (0.21), assuming a new-physics energy scale ΛNP of 1 TeV. © 2023, CC BY.

The dependence of f0(980) production on the final-state charged-particle multiplicity in p–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV is reported. The production of f0(980) is measured with the ALICE detector via the f0(980) → π+π− decay channel in a midrapidity region of −0.5 0(980) to π and K∗(892)0 are found to be decreasing with increasing charged-particle multiplicity. The magnitude of the suppression of the f0(980)/π and f0(980)/K∗(892)0 yield ratios is found to be dependent on the transverse momentum pT, suggesting different mechanisms responsible for the measured effects. Furthermore, the nuclear modification factor QpPb of f0(980) is measured in various multiplicity ranges. The QpPb shows a strong suppression of the f0(980) production in the pT region up to about 4 GeV/c. The results on the particle yield ratios and QpPb for f0(980) may help to understand the late hadronic phase in p–Pb collisions and the nature of the internal structure of f0(980) particle. © 2023, CC BY.

The elliptic flow (v2) of D0 mesons from beauty-hadron decays (non-prompt D0) was measured in midcentral (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair √sNN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D0 mesons were reconstructed at midrapidity (|y| 0 → K−π+, in the transverse momentum interval 2 T 2 for non-prompt D0 mesons with a significance of 2.7σ. The nonprompt D0-meson v2 is lower than that of prompt non-strange D mesons with 3.2σ significance in 2 T 2 of beauty-decay electrons.
