We propose a novel Markovian segmentation model which takes into account edge information. By construction, the model uses only pairwise interactions and its energy is submodular. Thus the exact energy minima is obtained via a max-flow/min-cut algorithm. The method has been quantitatively evaluated on synthetic images as well as on fluorescence microscopic images of live cells. © 2010 IEEE.

The convergence analysis for the rational Bézier curves

This article considers the limit of a rational Bézier curve. Limits are considered using point-wise, uniform and L1 limits to a family of rational Bézier curves. The paper shows that a rational Bézier curve dose not uniformly converge on [0, 1] to its point-wise limit, when one of the weight goes to infinity. The goal of this paper is to clarify the ambiguity between the viewpoint of Goldman [1] and Piegl [2] on the limit of a rational Bézier curve. In this paper we present a new cross-platform approach for video game delivery in wired and wireless local networks. The developed 3D streaming and video streaming approaches enable users to access video games on set top boxes and handheld devices that natively are not capable to run PC games. During the development of the distributed gaming system we have faced a number of challenges and problems posed by the hardware and network limitations. In order to solve these problems we have developed a multilevel testing methodology which is based on user assessment and technical measures for the system under development. In this paper we focus on the technical measures and instrumentation that we use for the system's performance measurement and testing. The benefits of our testing methodology are demonstrated through examples from the development and testing work. © 2010 IEEE.

Skeleton extraction is essential for general shape representation. A typical skeletonization algorithm should obtain the ability to preserve original object's topological and hierarchical properties. However, most of current methods are high memory cost, computationally intensive, and also require complex data structures. In this paper, we propose an efficient and accurate skeletonization method for the skeleton feature points extracted from human body based on silhouette images. First, the gradient of distance transform is used to detect critical points inside the foreground. Then, we converge and simplify critical points in order to generate the most important and elegant skeleton feature points. Finally, we present an algorithm which connects the skeleton feature points and estimates the position of skeleton joints.

We developed a simulation tool for investigating the evolution of early metabolism, allowing us to speculate on the formation of metabolic pathways from catalyzed chemical reactions and development of characteristic properties. Our model consists of a protocellular entity with a simple RNA-based genetic system and an evolving metabolism of catalytically active ribozymes that manipulate a rich underlying chemistry. Ensuring an almost open-ended and fairly realistic simulation is crucial for understanding the first steps in metabolic evolution. We show here how our simulation tool can be helpful in arguing for or against hypotheses on the evolution of metabolic pathways. We demonstrate that seemingly mutually exclusive hypotheses may well be compatible when we take into account that different processes dominate different phases in the evolution of a metabolic system. Our results suggest that forward evolution shapes metabolic network in the very early steps of evolution. In later and more complex stages, enzyme recruitment supersedes forward evolution, keeping a core set of pathways from the early phase.

Segmentation is one of the key problems in remote sensing image processing, and a cluster hierarchy is a powerful tool to analyze data on multiple scales. In this paper, we present an optimal hierarchical remote sensing image segmentation approach which is a combination of feature-based classification, multi-scale region merging and classification-based object refinement, and it is shown to have the following properties: 1) it gets better results on general remote sensing images;2) it offers a flexible segmentation hierarchy at a less computational cost. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

We introduce a 3D segmentation framework which uses principal shapes. The probabilistic energy function of the method is defined based on intensity, tissue type, and location information of the structures using a multiple atlas method. For intensity information, nonparametric probability density function is used which considers intensity relation of different structures. To find a local minimum of the energy function, a two-step optimization strategy is used. In the first step, shape parameters are optimized based on the analytic derivatives of the energy function. In the second step, shapes of the structures are fine-tuned using a level set method. The proposed method is shown to be superior to some popular methods in the literature using a dataset of 64 patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. In addition, the method can be used for lateralization with accuracy close to that of manual segmentation.
