Off-road heavy machinery such as snow groomers or excavators, often operate in low-light and hazardous environments. In this work, we explore the development of an intelligent camera-spotlight system with automatic and manual control to illuminate points of interest, such as obstacles or individuals at risk. We implement a prototype as proof of concept and integrate our workflow using a standard lighting protocol and a single-board computer. The presented calibration of the camera and spotlight ensures high precision in the desired use cases. In addition to testing the prototype on a real snow groomer, we evaluated its performance in terms of accuracy and repeatability. Overall, we showcase the usability of a commercially available spotlight in the context of spatial augmented reality in heavy machinery applications. © 2024 university of West Bohemia. Stereo estimation has made many advancements in recent years with the introduction of deep-learning. However the traditional supervised approach to deep-learning requires the creation of accurate and plentiful ground-truth data, which is expensive to create and not available in many situations. This is especially true for remote sensing applications, where there is an excess of available data without proper ground truth. To tackle this problem, we propose a self-supervised CNN with self-improving adaptive abilities. In the first iteration, the created disparity map is inaccurate and noisy. Leveraging the left-right consistency check, we get a sparse but more accurate disparity map which is used as an initial pseudo ground-truth. This pseudo ground-truth is then adapted and updated after every epoch in the training step of the network. We use the sum of inconsistent points in order to track the network convergence. Keyless entry systems in cars are adopting neural networks for localizing its operators. Using test-time adversarial defences equip such systems with the ability to defend against adversarial attacks without prior training on adversarial samples. We propose a test-time adversarial example detector which detects the input adversarial example through quantifying the localized intermediate responses of a pre-trained neural network and confidence scores of an auxiliary softmax layer. Furthermore, in order to make the network robust, we extenuate the non-relevant features by non-iterative input sample clipping. Using our approach, mean performance over 15 levels of adversarial perturbations is increased by 53.3% for the fast gradient sign method and 60.9% for both the basic iterative method and the projected gradient method when compared to adversarial training. © 2023 European Signal Processing Conference, EUSIPCO. Adapting to dynamically changing situations remains a pivotal challenge for automated driving systems, which demand robust and efficient solutions. Occasional perception errors inherent in artificial intelligence further complicate the task. Whereas traditional motion planning algorithms address this challenge by replanning the entire trajectory, a significantly more efficient strategy is to repair only the flawed segments. Our paper introduces a groundbreaking approach by formulating an optimal trajectory repairing problem and proposing an innovative and efficient framework for critical timing detection and trajectory repairing. This trajectory repairing specifically employs Bernstein basis polynomials in both 2D distance-time and 3D spatiotemporal spaces. A distinctive feature of our method is the use of an anytime grid search to determine a sub-optimal time-to-repair, which contrasts with previous methods that relied on manually tuned or fixed repair times, limiting both flexibility and robustness. A statistical analysis of 100 scenarios demonstrates that our trajectory-repairing framework outperforms the path-speed decoupled repairing framework in terms of scenario success rate. Furthermore, we introduce a novel algorithm for driving corridor generation that more accurately approximates the collision-free space than state-of-the-art work. The proposed approach has broad potential for application in embedded systems across various autonomous platforms. © 2020 IEEE.

EEG-based neuro-adaptive systems are becoming increasingly popular in the field of learning and education. Their ability to detect changes in brain activity in real-time makes them unique and enables monitoring mental workload (MWL) and fatigue. We present a neuro-adaptive system that combines an Augmented Reality (AR) piano tutorial with online EEG measurements of its user, delivered by a passive Brain computer Interface (BCI) system. The MWL was measured by means of EEG and a Filter Bank Common Spatial Patter algorithm (FBCSP) was trained to differentiate between low and high levels of MWL. Low levels were connected to the 0-back task and high levels to the 2-back task. The n-back task was a calibration task to train a binary Machine Learning (ML) classifier to differentiate between low and high MWL. This trained ML algorithm was then used as the central element of the passive BCI, which constantly classified small windows of the EEG during the piano tutorial and adapted the difficulty of the tutorial. 22 Participants were randomly separated into two groups: adaptive and non-adaptive piano tutorial. The results of the non-adaptive group showed significantly higher levels of classified MWL throughout the piano tutorial. © 2023 IEEE.

Machine vision systems play a pivotal role in streamlining manufacturing processes, notably in quality control through automatic in-line visual inspections. A common practice for inspecting parts, components, and final products is to use a master part benchmark for quality comparison. However, challenges arise when objects enter inspection points in unintended orientations. This misalignment potentially leads to erroneous decisions by automated systems, resulting in additional checkpoints or wastage affecting the production rate. To tackle this issue, we propose a visual inspection pipeline that leverages recent machine learning-based approaches to compare the inspection target and a master part virtually oriented to the same perspective. Specifically, we suggest combining 3D Gaussian Splatting and DUSt3R as a practical solution. Our approach demonstrates its efficacy in real-world scenarios through testing on three mock parts and a real industrial component. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper we employ a new genetic algorithm approach for CAD shape reconstruction, where a mathematical shape representation is reconstructed from point data. We reconstruct planar subdivision curves and 3D subdivision meshes from ordered input point data by fitting the corresponding subdivision control polygon or control mesh respectively, from which the smooth subdivision limit surfaces can be derived. For the reconstruction of curves the system estimates the number and position of control points required to approximate the curve closely. To reconstruct subdivision surfaces from points, the system determines a sequence of CAD operations which is subject to mutation in the course of a genetic optimization. We discuss implementation details of the proposed genetic algorithms and demonstrate our approach on a number of example data. © 2024 university of West Bohemia. All rights reserved.

Using a neural network approach, a shape may be compressed to a one-dimensional vector, the so-called latent dimension or latent vector. This latent shape dimension is examined in this paper. This latent vector of a shape is used to identify the corresponding shape in a database. Two types of networks are evaluated in terms of lookup accuracy and reconstruction quality using a database of Lego pieces. Even with small training set a reasonable robustness to rotation and translation of the shapes was achieved. While a human can interpret uncompressed data just fine, the compressed values of the network might be cryptic and thus offer no insight regarding the uncompressed input. Therefore, we introduce a latent dimension editor which allows the user to examine the geometry content of the latent vector and its influence on the decoded shape. The latent vector editor enables the visual exploration of the latent vector, by making changes to the latent vector visible in real-time via a 3D visualization of the reconstructed object. © 2024 university of West Bohemia. Atrial fibrillation (AF) represents the most prevalent type of cardiac arrhythmia for which treatment may require patients to undergo ablation therapy. In this surgery cardiac tissues are locally scarred on purpose to prevent electrical signals from causing arrhythmia. Patient-specific cardiac digital twin models show great potential for personalized ablation therapy, however, they demand accurate semantic segmentation of healthy and scarred tissue typically obtained from late gadolinium enhanced (LGE) magnetic resonance (MR) scans. In this work we propose the Left Atrial Cascading Refinement CNN (LA-CaRe-CNN), which aims to accurately segment the left atrium as well as left atrial scar tissue from LGE MR scans. LA-CaRe-CNN is a 2-stage CNN cascade that is trained end-to-end in 3D, where Stage 1 generates a prediction for the left atrium, which is then refined in Stage 2 in conjunction with the original image information to obtain a prediction for the left atrial scar tissue. To account for domain shift towards domains unknown during training, we employ strong intensity and spatial augmentation to increase the diversity of the training dataset. Our proposed method based on a 5-fold ensemble achieves great segmentation results, namely, 89.21% DSC and 1.6969 mm ASSD for the left atrium, as well as 64.59% DSC and 91.80% G-DSC for the more challenging left atrial scar tissue. Thus, segmentations obtained through LA-CaRe-CNN show great potential for the generation of patient-specific cardiac digital twin models and downstream tasks like personalized targeted ablation therapy to treat AF. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

As the leading cause of death worldwide, cardiovascular diseases motivate the development of more sophisticated methods to analyze the heart and its substructures from medical images like Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MR). Semantic segmentations of important cardiac structures that represent the whole heart are useful to assess patient-specific cardiac morphology and pathology. Furthermore, accurate semantic segmentations can be used to generate cardiac digital twin models which allows e.g. electrophysiological simulation and personalized therapy planning. Even though deep learning-based methods for medical image segmentation achieved great advancements over the last decade, retaining good performance under domain shift - i.e. when training and test data are sampled from different data distributions - remains challenging. In order to perform well on domains known at training-time, we employ a (1) balanced joint training approach that utilizes CT and MR data in equal amounts from different source domains. Further, aiming to alleviate domain shift towards domains only encountered at test-time, we rely on (2) strong intensity and spatial augmentation techniques to greatly diversify the available training data. Our proposed whole heart segmentation method, a 5-fold ensemble with our contributions, achieves the best performance for MR data overall and a performance similar to the best performance for CT data when compared to a model trained solely on CT. With 93.33% DSC and 0.8388 mm ASSD for CT and 89.30% DSC and 1.2411 mm ASSD for MR data, our method demonstrates great potential to efficiently obtain accurate semantic segmentations from which patient-specific cardiac twin models can be generated. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
