The effect of field-of-view, display type and user role on the experience of simulator sickness and presence in users of a virtual environment was investigated. A PC based assessment instrument was created to administer the Presence, Immersive Tendencies and Simulator Sickness questionnaires. The field-of-view was found to be the major determinant of both simulator sickness and presence.

Predictive statistical models are used in the area of adaptive user interfaces to model user behavior and to infer user information from interaction events in an implicit and non-intrusive way. This information constitutes the basis for tailoring the user interface to the needs of the individual user. Consequently, the user analysis process should model the user with information, which can be used in various systems to recognize user activities, intentions and roles to accomplish an adequate adaptation to the given user and his current task. In this paper we present the improved prediction algorithm KO*/19, which is able to recognize, beside interaction predictions, behavioral patterns for recognizing user activities. By means of this extension, the evaluation shows that the KO*/19Algorithm improves the Mean Prediction Rank more than 19% compared to other well-established prediction algorithms.

Traditional models of input work on the assumption that inputs delivered to a system are fairly certain to have occurred as they are reported. However, a number of new input modalities, such as pen-based inputs, hand and body gesture inputs, and voice input, do not share this property. Inputs under these techniques are normally acquired by a process of recognition. As a result, each of these techniques makes mistakes and provides inputs which are approximate or uncertain. This paper considers some preliminry techniques for dialog management in the presence of this uncertainty. These techniques—including a new input model and a set of extended state machine abstractions—will explicitly model uncertainty and handle it as a normal and expected part of the input process.

The inner city (Old Town) of Graz will be the European cultural capital in 2003. In this paper we present preliminary results on the reconstruction and visualization of this kind of cultural heritage data. Starting with a simple block model obtained by converting 2 1/2 dimensional GIS (geographic information system) data we focus on the image based modeling of the facades. Herein we illustrate a robust search for corresponding points to estimate the relative orientation between image ***, we outline our real-time rendering approach based on a LOD-R-tree concept. Special attention is paid on the LOD (level of detail) generation for historic buildings where two different ways working in 2D and 3D are explained. The visualization system is communicating asynchronously with a database system storing the LOD-R-tree data structure. This client-server configuration provides interactive navigation through the virtual scene and the scalability of a database management system.

Feature-based visualization of flow fields has proven as an effective tool for flow analysis. While most flow visualization techniques operate on vector field data, our visualization techniques make use of a different simulation output: Particle Tracers. Our approach solely relies on integral lines that can be easily obtained from most simulation software. The task is the visualization of dense integral line data. We combine existing methods for streamline visualization, i. e. illumination, transparency, and halos, and add ambient occlusion for lines. But, this only solves one part of the problem: because of the high density of lines, visualization has to fight with occlusion, high frequency noise, and overlaps. As a solution we propose non-automated choices of transfer functions on curve properties that help highlighting important flow features like vortices or turbulent areas. These curve properties resemble some of the original flow properties. With the new combination of existing line drawing methods and the addition of ambient occlusion we improve the visualization of lines by adding better shape and depth cues. The intelligent use of transfer functions on curve properties reduces visual clutter and helps focusing on important features while still retaining context, as demonstrated in the examples given in this work.

Nowadays there is a gap between the possibilities and the massively existing data on the one side and the user as main worker on the other side. In different scenarios e.g. search, exploration, analysis and policy-modeling a user has to deal with massive information, but for this work he usually gets a static designed system. So meanwhile data-driven work-processes are increasing in its complexity the support of the users who are working with these data is limited on basic features. Hence this paper describes a concept for a process-supporting approach, which includes relevant aspects of users' behaviors in support him to successfully finish also complex tasks. This will be achieved by a process-based guidance with an automatic tools selection for every process and activity on the one hand. And on the other hand the consideration of expert-level of a user to a single task and process. This expert-level will be classified during each task and process interaction and allow the automatically selection of optimal tools for a concrete task. In final the user gets for every task an automatically initialized user-interface with useful and required tools.
